For me, it varies according to what I have it on, and whether or not I have to make it.

For instance, for a sandwhich that I have to make, I prefer smooth because it's easier to spread. For a sandwhich that somebody else is making, however, I prefer crunchy.

Now, for icecream, melted smooth is obviously the PB of choice. People who like unsmashed peanuts within a ten feet radius of their bowl of icecream are freaks.

As a dip for fruit, the determining factor is whether or not the said fruit is supposed to be crunchy or soft. Once that is established, you should pick the oppositely textured peanut butter as the dip. For example, smooth peanut butter should be used with an apple, whereas crunchy peanut butter is better suited for a banana.

Since I love icecream and am usually the one making my sandwhiches, my vote goes to smooth peanut butter.

Crunchy is simply never, ever okay. The crunches cannot be predicted, and are therefore unacceptable in a dining experience.

Smooth all the way.

Either way (smooth or crunchy) a jar lasts a very short amount of time around me.

I normally stick to smooth, so that I can slather more on the sandwich.

Smooth is the only way to go.

Aaaagh! I want peanut butter!!!!

Um.... crunchy!!!!

Chunky almond butter.

Smooth and creamy.

Either way it falls face down when you drop it. [Wall Bash]

I read this as "For me, it varies according to what I have on...."

Made me bark like a seal. Secretary thought I had gone beserk.

It just hit me as funny considering the topic.

[Smile]

Definitely smooth.

Agrees with JonBoy:

Crunchy! is the only way to go. [Big Grin]

(Gee, JonBoy, this is the second food item we agreed on, maybe we should get together. [Wink] )

Why would you want to eat something that someone was too lazy to finish making smooth? I mean do you have crunchy mayo? Crunchy ketchup? Crunchy mustard.

It must be smooth.

Now the big question.

How many loosers here like Jiff instead of the only real peanut butter, Skippy?

Smooth is usually better, but I like crunchy, too. I just love peanut butter! As long as it's not the healthy stuff, that doesn't even have salt. Blech!

Posted by Ayelar (Member # 183) on :

Okay, I couldn't find peanut butter, but I did discover caramel-flavored Chex Mix!

Good, but like all pre-packaged snack food, it would probably taste better without all the chemicals.

Posted by JonnyNotSoBravo (Member # 5715) on :

Peanut butter needs to have texture (I'm reminded of Nick Nolte's line in Down and Out in Beverly Hills), so it has to be crunchy. Unless it's on celery. Cause then it already has texture.

Smooth, only!

And, as da_goat said, ice cream and nuts should never cross paths..

I'm a big fan of nuts *on* ice cream, but not *in* ice cream.

You know I read that you're not supposed to give a kid peanut butter until after he or she's six because he'll develop the allergy for it?

I'm allergic to peanut butter, and I know that when I was a kid I looooooooooooved pbj's.

Oh, well.

Smooth, with chocolate chips pressed into a spoonful of it.

Definitely going with skillery here...

coarse ground almond butter. Nothing but the almonds, baby.

Smooth.

Smooth all the way. And m^2, I've eaten Peter Pan (the huge cans you get at Sam's Club) my whole life.

I also have developed a love for Nutella...is that a Utah thing or what?

Posted by Ryuko (Member # 5125) on :

Smooth peanut butter. This is even more so since I got the braces. [Mad]

Nutella comes from Europe. And it is tastehhh... Hazelnut butter....

Posted by Mike (Member # 55) on :

Crunchy, duh. [Razz] Though I must respectfully disagree with Eruve: it's gotta be either just peanuts, or peanuts with a little salt and honey. And forget Jiff or Skippy; Arrowhead Mills all the way! [Big Grin]

Posted by knightswhosayni! (Member # 4096) on :

I don't care, as long as it's not sweet.

peanuts are supposed to be salty! leave them that way!

Ni!

Posted by tt&t (Member # 5600) on :

Smooth - only on pbjs.

Crunchy - only in fudge.

These are the only two legitimate ways to enjoy peanut butter. [Razz]

::likes Arrowhead Mills, too:: [Big Grin]

no sugar added peanut butter, crunchy, is the best. [Big Grin]

Smooth in general, but I won't complain about crunchy.

Nutella is awesome.

eeeew! I'm sorry, I like my peanut butter to taste like peanuts not like sugar.

That said: crunchy (Teddy brand)

I like peanut butter. Any kind. Any form. Must have it! Almond butter and Nutella are pretty tasty too, albeit expensive.

sarcasticmuppet, Porter introduced me to Nutella, and I think he knew of it before living in Utah. We were both pretty happy when it "caught on" here. Now if we can only get that to happen with Vernors....

We have vernors in michigan, but I hear it's hard to find out east, don't know about out west.

Nutella is NOT a Utah thing! It's a fun, classy European thing that shows that you're in a higher social class - you know, like mentos and orangina.

But now it's being cheapened. They put Kobe on the bottle! *shudder*

I suppose it's still tasty, though, and not as bourgeois as peanut butter. Honestly, once you convert, you'll never go back.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

There are a couple of stores here where you *might* be able to find Vernors, but they rarely sell it in both bottle and can. It is part of the store's policy that if you request them to carry something, they will. We keep hoping that as people experience the loveliness of Vernors, there will be more demand.

I don't mind either, I love both...the thing is...after my friend has introduced me to real peanutbutter, I only allow two ingredients in mine...1) Peanuts, and 2) salt...preferably not salt.

Smooth. Skippy. That's all. [Razz]

I love Nutella! At first I was a little bit confused by it, but for me it has been an aquired taste, and now I just love it! *sigh* I wish I had some right now...

If you wanna help support your fellow jatraquero, buy East Wind Nutbutters! (I live at East Wind Community, the nutbutters business is our main business.) Our stuff is available in the Midwest and Southwest. (Nutbutters tend to be a more regional kind of thing, since nutbutters are pretty heavy and expensive to ship... so, we're distributed in the Midwest and SW, Once Again Nutbutters is in the NE, Maranatha is on the West Coast, etc.)

Anyway... we're a worker-owned co-op and we make the non-Jif kind of nutbutters (no sugar, no preservatives, no hydrogenated oils, etc.) -- so, peanut butter, almond butter, cashew butter, tahini, and macadamia butter. Our stuff is WAY good (the peanut butter won a bunch of taste test awards a few years back), and it's also the cheapest natural nutbutters on the shelves, since you're not having to pay for inflated CEO salaries...

(Roasted cashew butter's my fave, crunchy almond butter's my second fave...)

I'll bring a bunch of nutbutters to BobnDana Con/Wedding.... tahini for baba ganoush... almond butter for almond pate... or, if we wanna get fancy, peanut butter for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches [Smile]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

oooh.. tahini. The only brand of tahini I can ever find here is Joyva, and then only at a couple stores. And once I had some in the cupboard that my roommate's boyfriend threw away because it "smelled rancid."

Crunchy. Definitely. Unless I happen to be extra poor at the moment, in which case smooth PB is easier to spread on real thin, which makes it last several slices of bread longer. But aside from that, crunchy.

My mom wasn't so 'choosy', I prefer crunchy, but will devour any peanutbutter [Smile]

Posted by knightswhosayni! (Member # 4096) on :

Plaid's nut butters are SO good. He sent me some for the christmas gift exchange, and I don't eat any of the other peanut butter in the house, now.

Ni!

Smooth.

I once made the mistake of buying 'lite' peanut butter. By accident of course. It was the most horrible crap I've ever tasted. It was an insult to peanut butter's good name.

Posted by digging_holes (Member # 6237) on :

I think that goes for "lite" anything...

Crunchy, crunchy, and more crunchy. Although you do need smooth to make grilled PB&J. Yum.

Posted by MEC (Member # 2968) on :

I don't care which, but my mother hates crunchy, so I usually only have smooth available.

Posted by Da_Goat (Member # 5529) on :

"Grilled PB&J"? As in, warm jelly? Ewww! Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck. I feel like I need a shower now, and I just got out.

Posted by fiazko (Member # 5812) on :

It's got to be smooth, and it DEFINITELY has to be JIF.

When I was a kid, I'd slather peanut butter on Triscuits and put cheese popcorn on top. I was a strange kid.

Posted by skillery (Member # 6209) on :

"Grilled PB&J"

There's an Elvis restaurant in Memphis where you can get grilled PB and banana sandwiches. Yummy. Stay away from the batter fried pickles though.

Posted by lcarus (Member # 4395) on :

I've never had a grilled PBJ, but I do sometimes like to toast the bread. The peanut butter is great melted, and the jelly is still cold.

[Smile]

I prefer creamy, Cor prefers crunchy. So I buy both, and the girls get crunchy . . . more creamy for me! [Evil]

Posted by plaid (Member # 2393) on :

Interesting fact = it's pretty hard to find peanut butter in Europe -- folks don't eat it much there -- and Nutella is WAY more popular...

Posted by Kraid (Member # 6302) on :

I'd have to go with creamy. But a grilled PB&J doesn't sound too bad right now.

Posted by lcarus (Member # 4395) on :

I believe it's uncommon everywhere outside of the US. I know my father had never heard of peanut butter before he immigrated here, and he never developed a taste for it. The public assistance that refugees got at the time included, along with the famous government cheese, a tub of peanut butter in each alottment, and he told me that these were basically always thrown out by everyone he knew . . . they couldn't even find people to give them away to!

Vegamite: smooth or crunchy?

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

There's plenty of peanut butter in the Philippines. I sure felt lucky to have it when I was there! Theirs tended to be sweet and runny, though.

Posted by Mike (Member # 55) on :

Oh, I like it runny.

You can add me to the "no salt in my peanut butter" crowd.

The only thing in my Arrowhead Mills crunchy peanut butter is organic peanuts.

Funny story: When my daughter was a toddler she would only eat Arrowhead Mills smooth peanut butter. My mother tried feeding her different (cheaper) brands of organic peanuts only smooth peanut butter on a couple of occasions and she rejected it outright, even though she hadn't even seen the jar the peanut butter came from.

That's one of the reasons we have used Arrowhead Mills over the years, though she is no longer quite so picky.
