I am really good friends with both "Viper" and Ivan, so I'm really proud of them and thought a few of you guys might find this competition of interest (ahem HOBBES [Smile]

).

They're in Prague right now! Way to go guys!!!

Prague or Atlanta. Prague or Atlanta. It was a tough choice, but I came down on the basketball side, mostly because I'm getting really sick of spending time on programming. If I'd been smart and stuck with a math or physics major like the linked guys, the choice probably would have gone the other way (especially since I've already been to 3 final fours).

We didn't know each other at all! I was on aim with her one day and This conversation ensued:
-So, you're from Portland and LDS.. do you know Aaron Eiche or Brigette Steele?
-Yeah! Aaron was in my choir before his mission, and Brigette just moved into our ward! I met her last week!
-Wow, small world. They were both good friends of mine at MSU.
-So, you're from Montana?
-Yup.
-The only Montana people I know are from Dillon. Do you know anyone from Dillon?
-Hmmm... just one person I think
-Do you know Mike Bailey or Ivan Andrus?
-Yes! I used to date Ivan!
-No way! So did I!!!

Again--wow. Creepy weird. But then, I've always said that it's a small world when you are LDS. I was on BYU campus the first day and I met a friend of mine I hadn't seen since I was 5 years old!

Very cool!

I went to a few such competitions in college, though nowhere near the level that these guys are at. Just regional stuff. It was fun! The judges always said my university had the most elegant code. [Big Grin]

I also did math competitions in high school. Boy, I miss those.

The closest I'll get to either of them this year is the World Puzzle Championship.

I actually was in the ACM programming contest for the region. My team placed 4th my junior year, one place from going to the next round (I think nationals). We beat all these competitive teams and nobody expected us to get anything but last place. Our team was "The cows", and MOOOO!!!!! was our battle cry.

Since we did awesome our junior years, everyone thought we would do even better as seniors, going to nationals and maybe onward.

Well, it turned out that my teammates had been working with visual basic all summer on a job through the college (setting up their access databases), and neither had used Java in like 6 months. I spent half the time period arguing with them about basic simple stuff! We did crappy. I would have done FAR better by myself.

During the time before the event, my two coworkers on the research grant were setting up a team. I wanted to leave my former team and join them, but didn't want to screw over my friends Pat and Austin.

So they grabbed a guy who wasn't good at all as their teammate. They got 4th place [Frown]

. So if I had joined their team instead of the guy who couldn't program well at all, we just might be where this guy is now, or at least have gone on to the second round.
