Books: Love of reading is fundamental. Tech Support: Computer literacy for the next generation of adults/workers is as necessary as spelling&grammar&penmanship was for current adults.
Gardening: From the small number of examples that I'm aware of, schools which decided to allot space for their students to engage in gardening had much better attendance and a dramatic increase in academic achievement. Photography: Similarly, extracurricular artistic activity seems to encourage students to do better in educating themselves.
Philosophy: Love of knowlege, the evaluation of how we know what we know as well as the limits of logic, and the exploration of the metaphysics/why is certainly a better way of teaching than "because we said so" or "you'll make more money if you study" currently used to force rote learning. Movies: From the admittedly few reviews by KarlEd and the general taste reflected in his recommendations that I've read, KarlEd seems to be more interested in the realistic gray-through-grey variations in characters&plotlines than in the absurdist fantasy black-or-white currently favored by the cinematic media & the majority of the public. Such a philosophic bent would better serve students than the nonsense that most are currently encouraged to watch.
