OK, I have heard various comments about how my television watching rights should be revoked because I watch American Idol. >>Dan<< I was in the "American Idol Non Watchers and Dissers of Watchers of American Idol" last year and the year before. I scoffed. I walked out of the room.

But now, I am hooked.

Jennifer, La Toya, Fantasia, and Happy George ROCKED last night, pure and simple. I KNEW Jennifer had it in her, I just knew it. And George, he just works the crowd with that smile. La Toya's music comes straight from a divine source, and through her like a funnel. She has no hype, just pure joy in her gift. Fantasia is fun and fresh.

So, before the vote tonight, who do you think is going to be voted out?

I HOPE and think it will be John Stvens. As mentioned in a previous post, however, I have little faith in the American people. La Toya in the bottom three last week? Give me a break.

I've never watched it, and never had a desire to. I've seen maybe 3 or 4 eipsodes total of reality shows. I don't see the appeal. [Dont Know]

I don't. I swear.

<-- no television

Not that this is remotely relevant. *grin*

I do love that the most popular show in America is a talent show. That makes me happy, for some reason.

I watched last year and this year.

Simon is usually right on with his comments.

John was horrible last night and last week. I like the kid, but his singing style is too one dimentional.

I think it will go down to George and Fantasia.

Even Simon says that Paula has the hardest job in that she has to find something nice to say about every one.

As a failed musician, I have no desire to watch a bunch of people fighting over a chance to be tomorrow's yesterday's news [Smile]

John Stephens is a great singer, when he's singing his style of song. He's just been forced to perform some wildly inappropriate songs because of the theme nights.

I swear I never watch it either..but if I did...

I think that either of the Johns are at the highest risk for tonight. J. Stevens being the at the highest. But if he goes out, at least did so trying something new. But yeah, I agree, very one demensional.

However, I absolutely loath Fantasia. She is the posterchild for and arrogant mouthy attitude. And her vocal, while stronger than some that stilll remain on the sshow by some miracle, are not very clean. It is hard to predict who will win this year b/c there seems to be no correlation between who is still on and their talent level. Amy who bought it last week was way better than either of the Johns, Fantasia, George , or Camile (boy is she weak!) I think Jasmine has an outside shot at winning, She and Latoya...and maybe jennifer, are the only ones left that i feel should have even ben in the top 12.

But keep in mind that these views are from someone who dosn't watch it. Because I don't.

It is a crime against nature that Jon Stevens is still in this group.

And I agree about Fantasia's attitude. how do you get better if you can't take any criticism?

I am in love with La Toya. she's classy, she's beautiful, and that voice...I don't care if she wins, though, because she'll get a deal no matter what.

TV is for people who can't handle Chocolate.

Big deal...

I watch it, but with very little respect. If they had a version where people would write their own songs, then I would be inclined to honor them more.

Last night was awful for the most part. I loved it when Simon said, (paraphrase) "Thank you for saving us from what was turning out to be a bad night of Karaoke. (sp?)

Haven't watched it for a while. I really should quit television altogether...
In favour of VIDEO GAMES!!! [Big Grin]
But what I want to know is why is that guy who couldn't sing now so famous...?

I admit that I don't watch it.

I try very very hard not to watch it.

But I am fed the info via stealth marketing. The news I watch the following day, on the same station as the show, gives me updates as if it were breaking news. The radio station I listen too on the drive into work devotes 15 minutes in the morning to reviewing and critiquing the show. Why? Are they owned by the same conglomerate? Probably.

THey say that its cooler talk by everyone. In truth, they are trying to make it cooler talk.

Elizabeth,

As the originator of the DS9 Geekazoid thread, I am in no position to criticize other people's viewing habits. (If that's not enough, I am a fan of Angel, Buffy and <whisper> Smallville, too)

And I am currently all excited because I will have the first 27 episodes of Deep Space Nine on tape by the end of today.

But I do NOT watch American Idol.

I have standards.

Okay, I have only ever seen two shows. I currently haven't watched TV in over a month...

BUT

One of the first shows this season I actually did catch. In it there was this really good looking younger guy who sang "Unchained Melody". He had sung for the pope, and for the Clinton's and others.

Simon told him that one is his favorite song, and yet that was the best he had ever heard it sung.

I am not one to appreciate male singers, but even I was totally impressed. What the heck happened to him? He was EASILY the most talented one on the entire show ever.

Anyone here know?

PS: Okay, after writing this, I googled to find out for myself and got this page. Apparently someone else had the same question, but theres no answer there either.

My thoughts are that they told him to get lost because having him in the competition would make it pointless [Smile] .

Sorry, I honestly don't watch it. I think I tried once, didn't like it. I don't understand the appeal of reality shows and the whole "voting off" concept. I find it childish.

Now reality shows that are just about showing actual footage, like an exciting car chase, a cool explosion, a tornado, those I get a sick sort of pleasure from.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Xavier,
I think what happens is that everyone can vote more than once. Once the competition gets to the point where the winners are chosen by vote, it all falls apart.

I vaguely remember the Unchained Melody guy, but do you remember his name?

As for you, Sndrake, I am keeping your post, so that next year, when YOU become addicted to American Idol, I can say, "hmmph."

There is a site that lists reality shows in categories. Boy are there a ton!!

It would be fun to do a personality profile based on reality tv show watching habits. I am kind of thinking of yours already, beverly, and it ain't lookin' good! (grin)

His name was Michael Keown.

After ANOTHER google search, the reason must suspect is:
quote:
The producers of American Idol (two of whom are also Judges) know that they have enough talent in the pool (the Final 32) to find a winner who is malleable. Why would they want to let in someone they suspect will become a real pain-in-the-ass to work with over the next couple of years?

And they are right really. The "winners" and even the runner's up are forced into terrible contracts which basically give Simon 100% control of them.

So of course Simon wouldn't choose someone who's already established enough to be a problem in the controlling phase of the process.

I agree with Elizabeth and Rohan about La Toya.

But I won't see how this plays out because the Gilmore Girls will start airing new episodes soon.

Elizabeth: Are you saying that my reality show watching habits mean I am voyeristic? [Razz]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Zal, we will fill you in.

Beverly, I cannot comment until I know the full extent of your reality tv habits. For instance, you might throw me a loop with a "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," and further confuse the issue by watching "American Chopper." So, really, I need the whole picture.

American Chopper is just cool.

Did you see the episode of American Chopper where Mikey was showing the new receptionist how to answer the phone?

Hehehehehe.

I like Mikey. He's funny.

I never got into American Idol for any of the previous seasons, and only occasionally catch episodes this season...but am I out to lunch if I say that I'm very underwealmed? I mean, none of them are spectacular singers, and Simon is right when he says that the redhead, Johnwhatsisname, is quite possibly the worst dancer American Idol has ever had. It was sad that he picked "Crocodile Rock" last night...he's got a nice mellow voice, and should *never* do anything like "Crocodile Rock" again. Ever.

Now for real TV addictions, I submit that "24" must be right up there. My sisterinlaw called at 6:30 yesterday to say that someone cut the cable fiberoptic line to their town, and would I please record "24" for her? She and my brother both were practically pleading with me. I've never watched the show.

"he's got a nice mellow voice, and should *never* do anything like "Crocodile Rock" again. Ever."

ha ha! You are so right.

You know what last night taught me, though? That Elton John has incredible range to his voice. i never really realized that until i suffered through other people singing his songs.

And Jeni, "24" is not a reality show. At least, I really don;t want it to be, and I don;t want to know how close it COULD be to being real, either, thank you very much. I have not watched this year at all. My nerves can;t take it.

I think I fall under the worst group possible...

I don't watch it, but I want to.

Don't shoot.

Da_G,

Ha ha ha!

OK, once again, Jon Peter and John Stephens made it through.

What EV er.

Poor Camille, but I think the whole thing was tearing her apart too much anyway. I thought it was interesting that they did not let Simon speak to offer her advice. I think that spoke louder than his words would have.

Posted by Rohan (Member # 5141) on :

I can't take it. that Jon Stevens....I admit, I've never been someone who thought Americans were stupid, but, after seeing this guy stay in, week after week....why can't they set up an alternate phone number so you can vote AGAINST someone? I bet more people would watch if they had that option.

Posted by Aeroth (Member # 6269) on :

I'm so glad Camille is gone. She deserved to leave before Amy did. It just comes to show you, this competition is slightly based on looks and personality and not highly on voice.

I watched the last part of last season's final episode. So I can't say I've never watched it.

I was eating lunch with a couple of the people I work with a few weeks ago. Normally we get along just fine. But the girl asked me if I like reality TV. I told her I can't stand it, I hate the editing, and I hate how all they can do is rip on each other in the "candid" interviews they're always having. Seriously, I would rather watch paint dry.

She gives me a blank stare, and then launches into an animated conversation with the other guy about 3 or 4 shows that are currently in vogue. They knew all the names and all the latest gossip on all the players. Amazing.

I have a wife a 2 kids, and I have no idea how anyone like me finds the time to watch that stuff all evening, every evening.

My version of reality television is Nova, This Old House, and whatever sports they show on a Saturday afternoon.

I never watched it or heard about it first season. I watched it religiously the second season (Aiken/Ruben contest) and this year I've had no interest in watching it once again. So I haevn't seen any of the episodes.

However, here at work, co-workers talk about it a lot, and most seem to agree that John Stevens should be outta there. And most think that La Toya or Fantasia will win.
