Cool, there's that Melosh guy again! I picked 1000 miles away from a 1 km icy comet hitting at 90 degrees into water at typical cometary impact speeds. The effects listed here would not have killed me at that distance, but they don't talk about climate changes or global wildfires either one. So I'm not sure this answer is really as bad as it would actually be.

1500 km away from a 30 mile diameter impact is not pretty.
