I'm trying to put together a list, and believe it or not, I have plans for that list. I just don't think that I should treat my interpretation as universal. [Big Grin]

What makes up Hatrack? Yes, yes the question that appears every five months when we move between cycles. But, seriously, what are our memes?

Let's make a list!

Hatrack couples
Wenchcon
Mooselet
((()))

What do you think of?

Robots and puppy dogs. Mostly puppy dogs.

For some strange reason, I'm always reminded of this infrequent poster called Orson Scott...something.

Just ask anyone who has tried to hug me.

Heh, I thought --|-- was a pretty good example.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I guess I sometimes try to organize a mental hygeine posse, to make Hatrack more fit for family viewing. But it tends to backfire.

Oops, how does this happen? I thought you were peterh. [Wall Bash] I really am not trying to be a dog in the manger.

I did stop for awhile because I got harped on. But other people continued to use it without mention. So I'm using it until the mods request that I don't. Maybe they will--and I will respect their wishes. But I don't like the double standard that currently exists.

(oh, and repeating what people already say in a previous post because we're too lazy to read everything and just want to say what we're going to say even though we know that people probably won't actually read what we say because we don't even take the time to read other people's posts but who cares because as the more experienced among us know, it's all about the post-count.)

New, improved google ads. Did you see the one for page 2 of DOG's religion thread? And since when does the devil have a "soul patch"? (looking at the evillaugh)

But I think there is much more to Hatrack than "not tough enough for Ornery". Except for the tough posters.

How important is it to have read some of OSC's work and appreciate it? To be who we are?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Well...it's unusual for someone here to *not* be familiar with OSC's work, simply because of the nature of the site, but if someone unfamiliar with his work did find their way here, and fit well with us, it wouldn't be any big deal. Someone who actively disliked his work...well, as long as they weren't hostile, just coming here to let us know how much he, and by proxy we, suck, I think the majority of us would be okay with it. Honestly, I don't really care for much of anything he's written since Pastwatch.

So, PTB, I'm curious--what do you plan to do with all of this information?

When I first came to Hatrack, I hadn't read any of OSC's work. A friend of mine (pepperuda) had recommeded the site to me as something that I'd like (and she was right). Since joining, I have read most of OSC's books (along with a lot of other great SciFi and Fantasy books recommended by people here).

There are certain canonical works that most jatraqueros have read or know.

Books:
Ender's Game, and other OSC
Lord of the Rings, and other JRRT
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and other DNA

Video:
Monty Python
The Princess Bride

Music:
Radiohead
They Might Be Giants

Art:

Poetry:

Theater:

I can't think of anything particularly canonical in those areas.

That's just the very core. I think it branches out from there. I hesitated whether to include Dune in the books, for instance. Other people may think of more that I haven't included. If we do a hatrack archive site, I think we should have a page for canonical works, with links. Maybe we could do first tier, second tier, third tier, and then branch out from there.

Definitely one of the very most important things about hatrack for me is the way it has lengthened my reading list. I'm reading more than ever before, and my list keeps growing faster than I can keep up.

Posted by peter the bookie (Member # 3270) on :

Those sound more like things we have in common and I'm really thinking in terms of things we've made our own or made together. I'm sure there's overlap, of course.

For a brief second I thought you were pleading "The 5th element" [Monkeys]

Poetry: That LOTR version of the 12 days of Christmas

Theater: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

I'd hate to be on Hatrack and not have seen any of the Matrix movies.
