I have a new (for me) monitor, but the type is all screwy on it. [Frown]

The thing that kills me is that I may not be able to read any suggestions. I can't read the screen very well. The only reason I can post this is that I could probably post a new topic with no monitor at all.

1. Turn on computer.
2. Hit windows button
3. Hit up arrow three times.
4. Hit enter.
5. *thinks* uh, get the new topic link. Okya, there's a problem there.

anyway, any ideas? I have the driver installed. Why won't it work?

Bandwidth ~= horizontal X vertical X cycles. Lower your resolution or refresh rate.

What monitor? We can look up the specs for you.

If you get stuck, commit this sequence to memory: Win-D, Context-r, shift-tab, right X5, tab X3, left as needed, Enter Enter.

I'm just going by memory, so feel free to correct me on the particulars, those who feel to check out NEC's specs online.

You can't get above 1024x768 resolution with that monitor, and chances are you can't get it to even display well above 800x600. Depending on the type of computer you have, including the video display card you have, you may or may not be able to get the settings that high anyway. However, something between the settings for Windows and the abilities of that monitor are now set all goofy.

What you could do instead of the old "press and pray" routine listed above is to have the computer completely off, and while powering on, begin pressing F8 right after the first screen that pops up (usually some numbers counting and checking RAM—the BIOS) and before any of the first Windows screens pops up. This will give you the option to start in "safe mode." From there, you will be able to change settings, and it will be set by default to the lowest standard video settings (16 bit color, 640x480).

Once you get the settings low enough on the main screen, you'll be able to find out what works.

Alternately, for under a hundred dollars, you can get a CRT that will not make your eyes leak blood from the corners.

I know what you mean, man. However, if I had an LCD, I would probably spend less time on the computer. Either that, or hook up an old CRT every time I use it.
