I'd like answers from men and women, as to where they'd take a friend to try to get their mind off of their significant other.

I'd like responses for men and women, whether they'd just had a breakup, or whether their significant other just left for a long trip (whether it be overseas in the military, on a Church Mission, etc).

Ideas for not just trying to hook them up with someone else (although I'll take these ideas if you have them as well), but also just 'cheer up' trips.

There's a scene I'm wanting to write that would take place in the location that the lovesick is taken, but I haven't decided where that place is - and the scene and dialogue surrounding the scene will differ depending on the context and location.

So, I'd love any suggestions you've got, be they just ideas, or past experiences.

Now Let 'er rip!

I'd take a guy to go play paintball and work out some of that frustration.

Well, I don't have a lovesick depressed friend. I think it's more accurate to say that that it's me who is depressed. My girlfriend said "let's go on a break because I don't have any passion for you anymore" after three years and then went on a date 2 days later. She says she still loves me. Hmm..... [Roll Eyes] Sorry to steal your trademark Mack, but all I want to say to her is --|--
I think the best way has been for me to call girls I used to like and hang out with them as friends. If it goes beyond that, and the depressed person is ready to stop feeling sorry for themself (like me [Frown] ), then it will and it will hopefully make them happy.

I've always thought that kite flying was uplifting. If there was a young child kite flying lesson or contest I would take anyone with the doldrums to see one of those.

But lately I have been working out and using a punching bag quite often. I'm getting more fit at least. [Dont Know]

it would depend on the ages and genders of the people involved, I think ...

for some reason, roller skating comes to mind - or mini golf ... something fun that brings you back to childhood and lets you be goofy.

If it was 2 women, I would send them for a makeover/spa day.

You know, I second the kite-flying idea. I never would've thought of it...but that's brilliant!

I'd say do something *outside*. When it's sunny. And warm, if possible. Sometimes my girlfriends and I will take a CD of upbeat music, go out to a park somewhere, crank it, and just dance & sing at the top of our lungs.

Now that's therapy [Big Grin]

Not to mention it will cause a need for therapy for those in earshot. [Taunt]

Nick, you should go to a bar.

Maybe, but for those who could see us...

I have pretty cute friends [Big Grin]

my buddy Brent took me to Krispy Kreme at 2am when jess and i split. we ate hot donuts. while it didnt take my mind off of the matter completely it was a nice distraction and one helluva gesture. it's the little things friends do.

This might be a good idea, as much as I hate it:

Chuck E. Cheese

*shudder*

Lots of people like Chuck E. Cheese. It's loud and shiny and you can win stuff, but it's not a club or a place to 'hook up' with anyone.

Bowling.

Kite flying is exilhirating, even if you suck at it.

A one-night craft class (like pottery or painting) at the community center (or similar place).

Poetry slam.

Build-a-bear (place where you literally build your own stuffed animal, it's cool).

Guided tour through museum or nature preserve.

Shopping! [Smile]

[edit: exhilirating? exilhirating? oh, bother]

I had someone dump me two days before Halloween, and I was throwing a Halloween party. Three of my friends brought guys I had met briefly that they knew had crushes on me but hadn't said anything since I was dating someone else. No one told me what was going on until later, but man, it was sure nice of them. Obviously, this doesn't work for your story, but if anyone out there can ever do it for a depressed friend, I highly recommend it. A little (or a lot of) flirting does wonders for the soul.

For your story, if it's women, I echo -- shopping. Or to a nice dinner out, with a bottle of wine... not a bar, not a pick up trip, but to get a little tipsy and talk lots and lots about what happened.

Pet store.

Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :

yes. Against Me! show SHOULD have them drinking or at least longing for a drink directly following (even the nondrinking guy says so)

The zoo! Be sure and ride the train, waving at all the people, and feed the monkeys.

I echo anything outdoors, perferably around kids, and lots of silly fun.

Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :

define kids.

Against Me! shows often have "kids"

so does krispy kreme

Go to a professional wrestling show. Nothing like watching men and women pummel eachother and flip in the air to get your mind off of your love life. [Big Grin]

I agree that it's going to depend on the person.

When a friend of mine lost her loved one (he died suddenly), we invited her over for breakfast and some fierce Tetris competition. It worked for her, because she's more of a geeky guy than a girl.

If it was a good girlfriend, we'd probably sit and home and talk and cry and laugh. Maybe watch a favorite movie like Goonies or The Princess Bride. Something silly.

I could also see going to GameWorks to play DDR, or going to the zoo and getting wax lions (and pretending they talked to us), or going bowling. Whatever it is, it would involve a lot of giggles that only a good girlfriend could produce.

I've never had good guy friends that I had to console during a breakup, so I'm not sure what I would do. Probably play video games, if he was the type.

Maybe, but I'm not 21 yet. I could go to a billiards bar. Pool always makes me calm, I have no idea why. [Dont Know]

Me: Jen, you like pool more than any girl I know, what's the attraction?

Jen: I like busting balls.

I always go to bars when I'm lovesick.

Though it's much like using a morning star to kill a sea monkey, a bottle of good tequila is very effective in quashing old memories.

In college when I broke up with this boy my friends took me on a little adventure. We were living in Lincoln, NE and one of the girls was from Ohio. So everyone got in her car and put on blindfolds and then she just randomly started driving. Finally when we were in the middle of nowhere she had us take off our blindfolds and tell her how to get home. It was a great time with lots of group bonding. And I definately didn't think about the boy for the evening.

Taalcon,

That's a nice question. [Smile]

I think an escape is necessary. Also, a place of promise and hope. Reaffirmation is good.

The Arboretum for flowers and picnics.

Then the lake for a campfire, kite-flying, and a burning.

Ahem, NAKED Twister is better....it's fun from the get-go.

------

If it were me, I would go to a drag strip or drifting in a big parking lot. I suck at both but it's such a thrill it's hard to focus on anything but driving. Same for surfing. Any extreme things that require a lot of focus.

Like spelling. [Grumble]
