[Smile] I was watching the Sixth Sense (great movie!) and they showed the new trailer.

Good stuff. I'm one of the easily freaked out...and I'm REALLY looking forward to this movie. [Big Grin]

I love hanging out athttp://www.apple.com/trailers/. Mainly because I don't have time to watch actual, full-length movies.

Narnia,

Did you like "Signs"? I puzzled over that movie for the longest time and I still don't feel like I got it.

Adored Signs. After I got over my nervous reaction. (It freaked me out.)

what the hell was it about?!

clearly it wasn't about aliens.

Mel Gibson's "people break down into two groups" speech is one of my favorite expositions on faith.

Signs is one of my favorite movies, but I STILL can't watch it by myself.

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

I think the sub/real plot was that of Mel Gibson as the reverend who had lost his faith in God...and how he got it back again. The name of the movie plays into that, his whole speech in the middle where he askes Merrill "Which kind of person are you? The person who sees the signs and believes in a higher power at work, or the person that sees it all as coincidence and believes that they're totally on their own?"

I think that this was what it's mostly about.

Edit: Beren, you beat me! I thought you were "trailing" tonight!! [Wink]

Narnia,

I think that's a good interp. But, it kind of conflicts with the "dream" aspect of the whole thing. The young girl asks "Are you in my dream?" And, the whole thing plays out like her dream.

fallow

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

Whoa. I didn't interpret that line like that at all. I always thought that she was dreaming during the whole movie and she had a "sense" about stuff that would happen. There's one scene where she hugs her brother and he says something like "I won't let anything happen to you" and she seems scared and he says "Did you have another dream?"

I always took that line as her knowing what was going on before hand...that was a subtle little character thing...

That's part of what helps Mel Gibson regain his faith at the end...it's just another one of those things, like his wife's last words, the bat in the right place, his son's athsma...all these things that worked together to save them at the end. He chose not to see them as coincidences, but as signs of a higher power there to protect and help them.

Shigosei...I don't get it. [Confused]

They stole the music from somewhere. If nobody posts it, I'll tell you later. I know for a fact that several people on Hatrack will recognize it.

true.

But the other symbols were barely there (time-wise), and explained in the dialogue. The glasses of water never were, except in the dreamy sense of combat with the aliens.

Watch the movie again. The glasses of water were mentioned, pointed out, made fun of, and talked about SEVERAL times.

Shigosei, your link is sending me back to this thread...I think that's why I was confused.

If you derail this thread, what happens to the trailer? [Angst]

The music is not very distinct, but I hear a little bit of Batman or Stargate in there.

Isn't it true that trailers usually have music from other movies on them? Because the soundtrack is done almost last, they have to use other music for all trailers.

Looks to me like the "creatures" in the woods are red... That explains their hatred of that color, and also we do get a few glimpses... Also, at one point in time we see Phoenix in a large clearing surrounded by red objects. Maybe they consider anything red themselves, and feel the need to save it.

It's definitely Stargate music.

I think my favorite trailer music ever was in the trailer for TTT, when they redid the Requiem for a Dream music.

I own signs, It's a great movie. And the glasses of water are mentioned and talked about an incredible amount of times, how could you have missed it fallow? They talk about it in the book store, the girl talks about it when she is giving water the the dog, while the sherrif is over mel gibson walks around the house collecting glasses of water but then gives up because there are so many. It's all through it.

The best trailer in the world is Robin Hood with Kevin Costner. The music was perfect and fit the mood. Every time I see that trailer I HAVE to see Robin Hood again--and I HATE the movie. It ranks for me as one of the most annoying films ever made. I hate it! I hate it! I hate it! I hate it! I hate it! I hate it! I hate it! I hate it! And yet, the Robin Hood trailer is one of the best works in filmography (is that a word?) in my opinion. Any trailer that can make you want to see a movie you know is horrible is a good trailer indeed.

Posted by Narnia (Member # 1071) on :

fallow...did you ask me something?

Yeah. Some of the best trailers as of late include the latest Spiderman 2 trailer (wow. What a trailer!), the Eternal Sunshine trailer (I don't know, I just liked that one), and I've really taken a liking to the trailer for The Terminal. [Smile]

The trailer for GARDEN STATE is one of the best trailers I've seen in recent memory.

--

And nearly ALL trailers use music from other films for the reason stated above - the Score is the last thing to be completed. So yes, almost all trailers ' steal' music.

prolixshore,

really? *slaps forehead* I'll have to watch it again. Thank's for pointing that out.

I noticed there were a lot of refs to Mel's character as "father" in the family sense. That got buried in there under the alien stuff, too. did you notice those?

The village is somewhere in America, and decently recent (or present times). If you freeze frame on the part where William Hurt is talking to the class you'll see a picture of George Washington hanging up on the right side of the frame. An alphabet (with captials and lowercases) lines the top of the room along with some paper chain links that the children clearly made. There are also several pictures/paintings on the left I can't make out.

For me it is the part where Hermione grabbed Ron's hand. Not exactly following the book, but hey, these kid actors are growing up fast so we might as well speed things up a little. Expect full make out scenes in Order of the Phoenix.

Fallow,
I think you might be confusing the use of "Father" as a title for a reverend. I don't recall his children calling him "father". It's okay if you don't get the movie.

"She threw up all over herself. Right then, I knew it was a miracle..."

I love "Signs".

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I can't understand why people find "Signs" scary.

That said, my guess here is that, in the upcoming movie, the creatures are in fact the mature form of the little red plant that all the villagers go to great lengths to pull out. Moreover, given the lengths to which the director's gone to establish paranoia, I am absolutely CERTAIN that the creatures are not actively hostile, but merely victims of a misunderstanding.

I think that the "aliens" in The Village are actually invisble bulls driven crazy by the color red (which is why they get rid of that color). Their handler gets infuriated when the villagers screw up by leaving red out and paints red marks on all the doors of the people he hates so the bulls will trample and romp through just those houses. Joaquin Phoenix must be trained to be the greatest matador of all time by the local blind village recluse, who happens to be an ex-matador. After Joaquin defeats the bulls, he has to have a big sword duel with the handler, who turns out to be one of the villagers.

Or this might all be bullsh**. [Smile]

the first one, without any dialogue. The second trailer is still great, but lost some of the edge of the first one. Or maybe just some of the newness. Regardless, the movie looks amazing.

I can't understand why people find any other movie except Signs scary. Aliens terrify me to a degree that nothing else comes close to. Maybe that's why I'm a scifi junkie. Most other "scary" movies don't scare me (even most other scary alien movies). In fact, the only movie I've been scared by *other* than Signs in the past few years was Silence of the Lambs.

Posted by Alcon (Member # 6645) on :

I don't watch horror movies if I can avoid it generally, but no movies terrify me more than aliens movies. Even Independance Day scared me quite a bit the first time I saw it (and occationally still does if I make the mistake of watching it when alone or in a nervous mood). The reasoning is simple: most other scary movies, when you think about it, couldn't really happen. They are way unrealistic, overblown or just silly. Aliens movies COULD. We're not really in space, we don't really know whats out there. There could very well be every type of Alien we've ever imagined and plus somejust waiting for us out there. And every alien movies could very well come true. Many of them are based on actual rumors and conspiracy theory type things, which are probably bollux, but you never know...

Yes, there could indeed be malevolent aliens out there who are capable of intergalactic travel but can't quite manage breaking and entering.

Like Tom, I didn't really find Signs scary. The aliens didn't seem all that frightening to me (the one that couldn't get past the locked door amused me...they can make amazing leaps, so they have some physical strength, but it doesn't occur to the one to kick down the door? eh)...I was willing to accept the non-scary aliens, though, until the ending.

Signs SPOILERS below.

Why would aliens allergic to water come to a planet that is 75% water(or is it 80%? I forget)? What would they do when it rained? It just bothered me beyond all belief. I realize that that wasn't the main point of the movie, and that's fine, but there are some MAJOR issues with the whole water thing. Why not have them be allergic to, I don't know, grape juice or something? That would've made more sense to me. I know it's a minor point, but it really really bugged me and left me with a bad opinion of the movie overall.

To all of your plot holes I stick my fingers in my ears and sing "la la la la!"

I still loved that movie even though your points are valid. [Big Grin]

Posted by NdRa (Member # 2295) on :

The aliens were killed by the toxins in the water, not by the water itself. That is why the daughter was constantly pointing out the contamination in water. Notice the TV report talk about the defeat happening in third world countries where the water is most polluted.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Hmmm. I did not notice that when I saw the movie (and didn't enjoy the movie enough to watch it a second time). Perhaps when it starts being played on TNT, TBS, etc., I'll catch it and see. But, to be honest, though M. Night Shyamalan is often touted as a great film-maker, I have yet to enjoy any of his movies to the extent that people (and movie critics) seem to. *Confession forthcoming*--I fell asleep during Sixth Sense, and wasn't interested enough in the part that I saw to see the rest of it. Heh. Maybe I just have a Shyamalan block or something.

Posted by Space Opera (Member # 6504) on :

Hah - I couldn't sleep for months after watching Sixth Sense. I really want to see it again because I was so shocked by the end (obviously I was too petrified to pick up on the foreshadowing) but I'm afraid that afterwards I won't be able to sleep again. Yes, I'm a major weenie.

I saw The Sixth Sense six times in the theatre, and I got nightmares EVERY FREQUIN' TIME. I kept thinking that I wouldn't get nightmares again because, obviously, I'd had them and it was over, and...nope. No good. Still with the nightmares. That movie scared the snot out of me and was responsible for a frantic drive across town to my old roommates' apartment where I discovered that was so rushed to get out of my empty, ghost-ridden apartment that I had neglected to insert my contacts.

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

Without your contacts did you have trouble "Seeing" dead people?

If your roommate was asleep, did you see bed people?

Did that get him very angry, so your were seeing Red people?

Did you make it up to him by taking him out to an all night cafe, but there you saw fed people.

Hey, I could do this all night.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

If I'd gone to my brother's, I would have seen wed people.

Good thing I didn't hit anyone - we would have needed med people.

The theatre clapped so loudly at the end, they might have voted Shamalyan to show them the way to Horror Shangra-Lai, where we would have been a led people.

you could go to a support group for people who fear seeing the movie. You'd see dread people.

One of us needs to see a support group.

THAT SAID.

I really really really hate it when people get hammered, decide to go to a first showing of a new movie, sneak in beer, and continue to be loud, obnoxious, rude, and laugh at everything.

Completely ruined the mood of the film and cut the tension.
