I've been working hard on my Young Writer's Guild website. It's a project for my gifted/talented class. It's due May 3 at 9 AM. Yikes! I will not have it online by then, but I can take my laptop to her office and show her how it would work.
Text from the opening page: "Long ago, guilds helped young people learn to master a skill or trade. Here at the Young Writer's Guild, you will meet master writers and work with your peers to craft your writing. Our Mission: The Young Writer's Guild exists to bring serious young writers (ages 6-12) together with peers and writing professionals in order to promote good writing and help young authors publish their work."

I want this site to be a bridge between what kids are learning in school and the Real World of publishing and submitting. I got the idea because I have a little girl in my class now who is writing well beyond her grade level. She needs more than what she can get at school. I'd love to see her publish, and she was very interested in the prospect when I mentioned it to her. But without support and guidance, it will never happen. The Young Writer's Guild is designed to be a lot like OSC's writing forums - writers supporting each other, helping each other get better, and sharing information about markets. I plan to have a forum and set up some sort of critique system.

I know a few of you were willing to act as mentors. I really would appreciate your help with making the mentor part of my site better. If you have a chance, would you kindly send me a picture (if possible), and short(no more than a paragraph) answers to these questions tonight? You don't actually have to commit to anything, since I haven't put up the website.

Here's the information I need:

1. A little personal information - family, pets, interests, other jobs
2. Writing experience and critiquing style
3. Published work or workshops attended - you might want to be aware that our kids are ages 6-12.

My mentor write-up:
1. I'm an elementary school teacher and a writer. I have a husband, a daughter, and two cats. Being a mentor brings my two favorite things together - kids and writing!
2. I like to write informational articles and fantasy stories. I teach 6+1 Traits in my classroom, so I'll use them to talk about your writing. My critiques are honest but gentle.
3. Publications: Winter Kayaking in Outdoor Indiana

It doesn't have to be anything fancy - I just need something I can showcase on the site. Thanks for any help you are willing to give!

Also, if any of you would like to send an article about the craft of writing or something you have learned about writing, that would be smashing.

Thank you ever so much!

Always,
Andrea
