Come on guys, just ignore them. They'll get bored and leave.

It's hard, I know. Just about time w2w posts I write a post attacking him. But I usually decide not to post it because I don't want to encourage the kid.

But it is interesting.

Wouldn't it be just as much fun to open an Instant messenger window with yourself and type back and forth. Honestly, how many usernames do you really need? Nobody's fooled.

In my best Bob from Office space voice..

To be honest with you, I love his posts. I do . I am a Want2Write fan. For my money, I don’t think it gets any better than when he posts
like Looney Tunes, Britney Spears, Tom & Jerry, indecency, any ethnic, porn, and some other stuff being blamed for harming children and/or others (unless porn can be very harmful).

Posted by SoberTillNoon (Member # 6170) on :

Well, this thread is throughly confusing me.

Posted by Alexa (Member # 6285) on :

Incidentally, I am none of the w2w derivatives. I am trying to get 1000 posts as soon as possible before our baby is born and for other reasons I will mention then. I will have no other identity until I achieve that goal. I have much more fun talking to myself as myself like on the 24 thread. [Smile]

I think it is possible that w2w is much more clever then his/her posts suggest. I would love to know the identities of the other w2w derivatives, as I find it a little funny [Smile]

Posted by Alexa (Member # 6285) on :

oops, maybe that was not addressed to me? I already have some people think I am w2w. lol

Yes I do.

Posted by SoberTillNoon (Member # 6170) on :

no, I don't. I am just confused by all these people making names played off w2w's name. You? As far as I knew, you had not posted when I was writing mine.

Posted by Xaposert (Member # 1612) on :

What's with the w2w derivatives? If you're going to insult another Hatracker, at least don't hide behind a different screenname when you're doing it.

Alexa, I would really appreciate it if you didn't bump all of w2w's threads. They're a waste of space on the first page, and REALLY annoying.

What gets me all the more confused, is that they have more than one post. And, yes, the time of day does have to do with my comfusion.

This reminds me of several years ago when everyone was posting on the young writers forum. Then some troll came in and everyone got really mad and OSC shut it down. I don't know why but I really laugh when terrible conflict comes up. It must be a character flaw. Anyway, this just reminded me of the entire fiasco.

Lurker Power! [Big Grin]

Posted by Storm Saxon (Member # 3101) on :

At this point, Stroman is making an effort to communicate politely, I think. So, I don't think it's fair to insinuate that he is a troll.

Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :

He's playing nice because some people here are gracious enough to take him seriously after his arrogant, in-your-face fanatic entrance.

If we went back to giving him the same sort of responses we'd give Lalo or Ron for pulling that crap (i.e. [Roll Eyes] ), he'd be back to the name calling, partisian BS, I predict.

This is, indeed, how several regulars entered Hatrack. Chad fits a certain profile, and it's my hope that he'll tone it down a bit in order to become a valuable member. [Smile]

I'll stop ignoring him (that is, not posting responses) at some point.

Posted by Bob the Lawyer (Member # 3278) on :

He could almost be doing this for the good of the community. Things have been tense and divided and then in walks a complete and utter dickhead. Everyone can agree to dislike this prick and in doing so can finally agree on something.

CStroman saved Hatrack!

But he's still a wanker.

Posted by CStroman (Member # 6872) on :

I think that toning down is called for on the other side as well.

Calling someone a TROLL is a pretty "TROLLY" (not the train car) thing to do itself.

Regardless of how long someone's been on the form, some people have magically morphed into TROLLS as well.

Let's all turn off TROLL mode. [Wink]

Calling somebody a troll might be obnoxious and pointless, but it's not really trollish.
Wikipedia entry for internet troll

quote:
On the Internet, troll is a slang term used to describe:

1. A post (on a newsgroup, or other forum) that is solely intended to incite controversy or conflict or cause annoyance or offense. (Many posts may inadvertently cause strife as collateral damage, but they are not trolls.)
2. A person who posts these.

Posted by Bob the Lawyer (Member # 3278) on :

No, see, wanker is my official word for pompous people who wander willy nilly through threads talking at people as opposed to with them.

I'm so misunderstood.

*le sigh*

Oh, and you're a nincompoop. (After my vitriolic first post I'm pretty sure you've come to expect it from every post, right? And, well, I both hate to disappoint and love my work)

*contented sigh*

I would just prefer that he either improve his tone and logic, or never, ever take the same side as me in a discussion.

I also find it more painful when somebody who apparently agrees with me goes trolling than when somebody who I disagree with does so.

Posted by Bob the Lawyer (Member # 3278) on :

Yeah, but I don't want him either, Dags.

Looks like you're getting picked last during Hatrack gym class, Chad.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

Can we pretty-please with sugar on it go back to using the lovely bold and italic features when we wish to emphasis something? Please? All this all-caps is getting very old. Plus, I think people tend to get more annoyed when you use all caps then when you use bold... it just comes across as rude.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I don't see it that way.

I AGREE THAT IT COMES ACROSS AS OBNOXIOUS WHEN YOU TYPE IN ALL CAPS.

But if you are JUST capitilizing to emphasize some of the words, I don't really see any difference between using some of the other emphasis techniques.

Posted by dkw (Member # 3264) on :

I think it's the overuse of emphasis that gets annoying (and diminishes the effectiveness) whichever style is used.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Good point.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

All-caps is more difficult to read than the other options. Your brain processes the shape of a word as well as the actual letter combinations, so you read common words that you recognize the shape of much, much faster than other words that you actually have to look at the letters. When you use all-caps, the words are all the same shape (rectangular) and just different lengths. Most style books have sections on this... but frankly I'm just paraphrasing my mother.

In other words, all-caps hurts my eyes. [Razz] And what dkw said

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Personally, I'm a fan of being lazy and emphasizing words like *this*.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

I spent too much time on ISCA bbs in the late-80s/early-90s, where astricks indicated action. Like *hug* or *giggle*. I still think that way. But it works, too.

Posted by Sara Sasse (Member # 6804) on :

When I saw him START lecturing Dagonee on LEGAL TERMS, I was pretty SURE we were ABOUT to see him start DISSECTING his own PANCREAS.

I was FASCINATED.

ElJay's right that all-caps is more jarring than other emphases, and dkw's correct that any overuse is bad use. TomD is also correct that some of the strongest political consciences tend to come in flaming, but those that stay seem to find ways of being effective at getting their points across.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

And Sara just likes agreeing with people.

[Wink]

Posted by Sara Sasse (Member # 6804) on :

Well, yeah. And train wrecks. *grin

I've finally (finally) figured out that I have to apply the same frame of reference I rely on in visiting my family in Indiana to reading some posts or even threads here. That is, don the social scientist's garb and sit back: "Why, I do say, what extremely odd behavior."

The emotional distance smoothes out the cognitive dissonance quite nicely.

FASCINATING.

By the proper definition, what Stroman doing is not trolling either. His posts are intended to commuicate opinion, not "solely intend to incite controversy" etc. Calling someone a troll is much closer to this definition (since it could be considered intentionally causing offence) than what Stroman is doing.

It's fairly common for the proper definition to be ignored though, and for Jatraqueros to call anyone doing anything they consider annoying a troll.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I hate that, though, Sara - needing to put on the distance and armor.

Fortunately, it's not needed all the time, only occasionally. The times that it isn't makes the times that it is worth it.

Posted by Sara Sasse (Member # 6804) on :

Chad, you are overcalling it. Just because I speak British in my head doesn't mean I'm calling you British. I am, however, pretty sure you are accustomed to being inflammatory and than acting as if you have no idea what is going on when people call you on it.

Disingenuity reminds me of my ex-husband, and my ex-husband brings out the British in me.

Make an effort to figure out how to interact in this already-established community in a civil way, and we can be friends. Keep up with the heavy disingenuity, and I'll view you from afar. I don't know your address or telephone number, and I don't care to -- I certainly don't care to follow you around and cause you ill in your life.

I'm only interested in interacting with people who share both authenticity and civility with me, and beyond that, I leave people alone. You've had your trial by fire here, and now you have a lot of people watching. You seem like a passionate soul and may well be a pleasant enough guy, who knows?

I hope we can be civil friends, but if your definition of civility and authenticity ends up being very different from mine, then we can just stay out of each other's way. That works, too.

Speaking of the voices in my head, this is an embarrassing point -- Noemon, I "hear" your words in exactly, exactly the same voice as I hear TomD's when I read you. I'm not sure why, and I cannot shake it. Some brain glitch. The same for Anne Kate and Theca -- from the point of view of my brain, they are the same person. [Dont Know]

I'm sorry for the misattribution. Yes, I believe it was you that said it. [Embarrassed]
