Ok, decided to check it out and see what all the fuss was about, so I bought Star Wars Galaxies. Naturally, as soon as I buy it and get home I find my dad took it to the shop for some weird reason. But hey, we got it back yesterday, so I decided to check it out. Everything going good, it accepted my debit card, got everything set up. BUT, apparently there are 14 hours worth of things that I find I have to download upon signing on for the first time. Ugh. So, I decide to just keep it running, and sleep on the couch.

Wake up. Found that I wasn't supposed to be having the antivirus running, and it stopped downloading all that stuff. Start it up again, looks like I have to start all over, and there are 10 hours left of things to download (patches and stuff). Ugh. : [Grumble] :

Ok, so first, to those who play mmorpgs, any advice on gameplay and such? What kind of things can I expect, besides spending a lot of time doing this.

Next, I'll try and keep this updated with how things go, up to the very moment with I decide the break the CD's in half, and swear profusely.

Wish me luck!

ok, i figured the RPG part but wasn't sure what the rest meant.

10 hour download? is this through a dial-up? That would suck. I am like a big kids when it comes to my toy. I want them NOW!

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Yes. Dialup. [Grumble]

Road runner was the best thing I've ever bought. I love it. Plus Xbox live so totally kicks butt and it's only possible through broadband.

Because Storm Saxon got my kids stuck on Achaea MMORPG from This Thread I now have new "wallpaper" in my dining room.

They wanted an easy reference to the entire map of Achaea. So they PRINTED out the whole thing (which took some doing -- in order to get it large enough, they had to zoom in on certain areas, screen print, paste to Word, then crop and print -- and it took about 25 sheets of paper) and they have pieced together the entire map on one wall of my dining room (where the computer is) for easy reference.

SWG is a timesink of epic proportions, and that's about it; at least, that's the word on the street.

City of Heroes is more fun (in many people's opinions), is better for newbies, and casual gamers (they designed the game so you get a lot of accomplishment early), and generally less bug-ridden. It is also much more simple, less stuff to collect, less Star Wars, and is modern-day comics as a setting, which can be a turn off.

Oh, and there are a half-dozen (or so) of us Hatrackers in the City of Heroes. [Smile]

I love the ideas of Raph Koster (I was a big UO fan, and Raph was lead designer on UO and SWG), but his implementations end up being time consuming and often tediously unheroic.

How much does it cost to play CoH? I know $50 for the game but what about the online subsciption?

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

beat, the first month is free, and then it's 15 bucks a month (a little less if you do a multi-month plan). 15 bucks may seem a lot, but that's a single night at the movies (plus popcorn) and it's as cheap as buying a new differnet game every 2 months.

Or as KarlEd put it, he's gotten more enjoyment out of CoH for 15 a month than he gets out of his 40 bucks/month cable service.

EDIT: Best Buy may still be selling CoH for 40, if you have one near you.

Yeah, well, I was looking at the prices and SWG was 30, while CoH was 50. 20 bucks, while small reletively, is still 20 bucks.

True, but if you are worried about the initial outlay, you probably shouldn't be investing (and that's what it is, no matter how casual a gamer you are) in an MMORPG. There are those pesky monthly fees that eventually dwarf whatever the initial outlay is.

I've heard that in Star Wars: Galaxies that you shouldn't expect to be a hero. It's an environment designed for true role playing where your character matters, as opposed to your stats. I havn't played it, but that's what I've read.

There was a three-day Guild Wars public alpha a few weeks ago. It's a neat MMORPG in that it won't require pay-per-month when it's released. It looks really great, but it has a long way to go, in terms of expected features.

Ok, after FINALLY getting all the crap downloaded and stuff, I finally got on and started playing around 12:30 am (a whole friggin day of downloading patches... annoooooying.) I decided to go the way of an artisan wookie named Colgraf (look, I wanted a mythological reference... got squat, so I went to get an interesting OSC reference, so hey, look, its Col. Graff), and my planet right now is Tatooine. I have no clue what Galaxy I'm in, since I'm at work right now. Not a bad tutorial, the layout isn't too bad, but it took me a while to figure out that I can change the mouse thing by pressing alt. I'm going to have to learn macros, methinks, and a lot of other stuff, but for now, sticking with the basics.

Dial up stinks, btw. It got soooo laggy and annoying at one point. Not too much to talk about what I did. Mainly, it was just survey this, drill for that, make such and such a weapon. The problem was that despite the routine of doing things over and over again, it IS addictive. After getting Survey skill 1 and tinkering 1, I looked at the clock eventually and saw that it was 4 AM. Ooops. Ok, bed time, wake up, check AIM, get on again. This time I mananged to be able to shoot some guys, and get some fighting XP. I need to learn how to get better with guns and fighting. After 3 NPC's teamed up on me, I finally was exhausted or whatever, and ended there.

So far, I like. The connection was better today so no lag and such.

AOL doesn't even hook up it's employees with high speed internet?

Dude, AOL doesn't even provide high speed connections anymore.

So YOU'RE one of the people who pick Ender's Game names for their characters instead of coming up with their own stuff! I see you people all the time! Drives me crazy! [Smile]

It always starts innocent. Soon, though, you'll be naming your pets and children things like "Ender", "Bean", "The Endernator", "Enderbender", "Orem Scanthips", and "Mooselet".

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Well, I did consider GeoffCard for a while.

I've become a believer in picking out names that will generate humor later on.

In Civ 2, Bill had a civilization that celebrated "We Love The Funk" day.

In KOTOR, he named his evil jedi the most evil thing he could think of: Wife.

And my Sims Bustin' Out character asking another character, "Have you ever kissed a Fatty?" still makes me laugh.

Sheesh. I expect more creativity out of you, orange tighted goober.

I'll work something out on my next character.

Posted by Bob the Lawyer (Member # 3278) on :

One of my friends played Final Fantasy tactics as "Shagme." Lots of laughs over lines like, "Please Shagme!" or "Oh Shagme!" This was then escalated in KotOR with "Shagme Knightly." Good times, good memories.

I'm terrible with making up names. I generally steal them from a random book or make someone else come up with them for me.

I was Anyea Eoishina <ASH> on the Chilastra server. I also had a jedi named (nope. not gonna say incase I ever go back =)

As of the time I quit a month or two ago, the best character combination to be was Teras Kasi/Doctor.

If you have any questions let me know and I'll answer them. I've pretty much done it all in that game. Run a guild, built a town, run a successful business, earned and leveled a jedi, blown up bases, owned bases...

Only thing I haven't done is be a ::spit:: imperial.

That's the great thing about Neverwinter Nights. You just buy the game, and there's no fee to play. It's a lot like Everquest (in the fact that's it's basically D&D). It's not as huge, but still popular.

My characters always end up being named either "John" or something with "Sax" in it.

NWN is a great, but eventually the lag issue bogs the game down till it's unplayable...

That being said, if you know a good server, relatively lag free, lots of people and content... let us know =)

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

pssh, you can't be a wookie in NWN.

Posted by The Pixiest (Member # 1863) on :

You can't be a wookie in SW:G either if you play to have a decent character at end game. I suppose you could have a wookie crafter on a different account, but if you play on being involved in PVP you MUST wear armor and wookies can't.

In fact, I think Zabrak and Human are the best races to be. If I recall correctly (I never played a Zabrak) Humans can have a much higher Mind Bar. The other two bars can be easily buffed by a doctor. (mind buffs are harder to come by.)

That depends on what server you play on. I've been playing mostly on NS3 Pacific, and the lag isn't too bad. I haven't really ventured out onto many other servers yet...

I've played NWN on a LAN but never tried it on the net (something to do with my cd key being used already [Evil] ).

I wouldn't touch SWG but I'm biased, having played Everquest for two years I now have a great loathing for Sony Online. They like to push out new content unfinished and let the playerbase work out the bugs, something that should have been taken care of in beta.

I'm currently playing FFXI and loving it. No bugs, the Japanese players are very polite and helpful, and they have a very nice storyline with (gasp) dynamic content. Plus its nice whn you have a family member that plays with you. [Smile]

I've heard good things about CoH but I haven't picked it up yet, I don't wanna be paying for two online games at once.

thats being changed.

Tsmith, find out what server you're on. I'd love to be able to meet up with you as i'm looking for more people I know on there. I have a few friends who play, but have so far only met up with one on Naboo.

Hey Paer, since you're on Chilastra, would you look at the naboo map and see if my hospital is still there? It's called St Anyea's Infirmery for the Terminally On Fire. It should be between IA Command and Cabo San Lobos (where Ft ASH used to be.)
