Well as of today I can drive the streets! Mwuhahahaha! You may congratulate me..... or not..... your choice... yeah. Second of all, all the energy that a Pulsar sends out, what happens to it?

I thought pulsars emit radio waves (and like x-rays and stuff)....so they go out into the universe like all the other waves and rays and stuff so the little earth people with telescopes can see/hear them....

Congrats on the driver's license - no crashing now! [Smile]

I think that in order to pass the driving test, you should be able to spell "driving."

*revokes license*

It's my job to be evil. They don't call me a grammar nazi because I'm all sunshine and giggles.

On the contrary, Jon. That was the first impression I had of you. [Smile]

Pulsar Energy, what happens to it?

I believe that if Cheney can't finds some way to get oil out of it, then the Green Party is trying to convert it to electricity as a clean source of energy.

I myself have a $6.25 Million grant request from the Engergy department to research that. Why, within a millenia or two, we could do away with the oil-economy.

That was the old Jon Boy, in the days of his Hatrack innocence. The long, hard years have stolen that youthful joy from me, leaving me a bitter shell of a man whose only satisfaction comes from criticizing other people's spelling and grammar. Alas!

Nobody answered your question about pulsars yet, so I will.

They radiate all that energy into space. The only reason we don't get fried by pulsars is that luckily none are very close to us. If there were one in our near stellar neighborhood it would be pretty dangerous.

As it is, space is full of high energy junk that radiates in all directions. Gamma rays from space continually impinge on the atmosphere from everywhere. Gamma rays are very high energy electromagnetic radiation, like light or xrays only much higher frequency. The thickness of the atmosphere protects us from most of them. Occasionally one gets through and does some damage to a few of your cells. If it does the right sort of damage to the right molecules in your chromosomes, you can get cancer from it.

The professions with the highest radiation loading in the western world are not reactor workers or uranium miners. They are pilots and flight attendants. They spend so much time above the protective atmosphere that they get a much higher dose of gamma rays than the rest of us, which affects their lifetime cancer probabilities significantly.
