Anyone interested? We're thinking about doing it, or part of it, this summer or next summer. Has anyone done it before who can give us pointers? I bet it would be an epic journey. I like epic journeys. [Smile]

How about an epic quest?

I'd love to, but don't think I could. Takes six months [Frown]

I'd love to do it someday. I missed out on the chance to do the John Muir trail last summer. (saving for retirement)

Well, we were talking about just doing one month's worth. But it's all totally up in the air at the moment and depends on what people want to do. [Smile]

mph, what would the quest part be? Epic quests are of course even better than epic journeys, yes! [Smile]

I am so totally interested. Hiking the AT has long been a dream of mine, and was one of the reasons I decided to walk a marathon.

I couldn't this year, though, because I don't have the finances, and I am terribly out of shape. Next year is a possibility. And yeah, I would only want to do a portion of the trail before I attempted a through-hike. Also need to do some short day-hikes or weekenders beforehand, as I have never hiked with a pack before.

I also plan on doing parts of the ADT eventually. Was hoping to do Illinois for my birthday this year, but it doesn't look like that will happen. [Frown]

Me. [Smile]

My friend and I have been planning to hike the AT since junior high. Well, we haven't done much actual planning, more like dreaming. We've been thinking about taking a spring semester off sometime during college and hiking it spring/summer.

I would love to join you for a part of the AT this summer. I'm pretty much booked until August, though.

One of my friend's parents are doing it right now. They're actually near western MA at this point. I think you can't start too late in the year if you want to do the whole thing. They started on Feb 14(heading north) and have not started to be able to do about 20 miles a day. I guess that you need to cover a lot in the first months because the hardest part of the trail is the last portion. You also want to be done by about sept. or october at the lastest because it gets really cold up in Maine. So if you start from the south it's best to start early but if you start from the north you'll have to start later.

That's a great link. I don't think there's any way I can take six months to do the whole trail. If I did I think I would start mid summer in Maine and go south. But I think one month might be doable. Maybe starting somewhere mid trail ish? We could think of it as a training hike for the full thing. But really I am totally open to ideas. I posted at this early stage to see if there was any interest at all and what other people might want to think about doing. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
