I just got a gmail invite for free... [Big Grin]

A friend of mine just sent me the email and I am still in the process of choosing my user name.

I am giddy!

Bring us in! Yes, you've got bragging rights, now get us all in too!

now what's the big hoo-ah with this gmail business??

Something to do with twelve inch beef...

no, wait. that was a different thread.

gmail? never heard of it.

Posted by Lupus (Member # 6516) on :

it is google's mail service...it is still in beta so it is not open to the general public...you have to be invited. Many of us are crossing our fingers hoping to run across an invite...others are lucky enough to get one. [Razz]

i knew that much, but why is it so coveted?

i mean, why care?

Posted by Damien (Member # 5611) on :

Yeah, big deal! I've got a GB inbox... >_> And it's not beta, either.

EDIT:bits to bytes...

Yahoo mail just upped their storage limit from 6 MB to 100MB.

I wonder if this is in response to Google's beta testing?

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Yes, it is.

A large part of the big deal is getting a good username as opposed to bob57392.

Another part is geek points, which are often attached to longevity at certain things -- a low slashdot member number, a character that's been around from the beginning on Everquest, and now a beta gmail membership all have varying degrees of geekitude attached to them.

I don't see why any real geek would be proud to use webmail.

Posted by Ayelar (Member # 183) on :

Eventually you'll be able to use it over POP, right?

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Psst, tom, I think it has to do with the extra large storage, and the fact that its features are better than many/most/all email clients (depending on what you consider better). Plus, you gain high speed access (no imap synchronization) while still having a (very) well backed up version.

Posted by SoberTillNoon (Member # 6170) on :

I don't understand what the big deal is. If you have a POP3 account, you can just download the mail to your comp. with a program like outlook(express). I don't understand why a webmail service would be preferable. I hate webmail.

Now all you need is an orkut invite, peter.

Webmail sucks in terms of UI, and if you're into PGP then webmail is not really a viable option. However, for someone like me who wants to be able to access the same email account from work and my apartment without synchronization overhead, webmail is pretty much what there is.

Posted by porcelain girl (Member # 1080) on :

i use about four different computers in two different locations.

webmail seems the best idea for consistency.

Posted by SoberTillNoon (Member # 6170) on :

Ah, yes, I did not think about that. I only use my e-mail from home, so I guess that I do not hate yo worry about that.

Again, I have a GB inbox with pop/smtp service for free already, without the hassle of waiting for a Gmail invite or whatever, but I found http://gmailmachine.mmgn.com/ that for those who might be interested in the possibility. Not to mention hitting refresh like it's going out of style is pretty common, here. >_>

Part of it is also interest in the ways gmail organizes your mail. It shows you a "conversation" or thread of emails when you read a particular email, showing you the context. It also supports searching all your emails for keywords, which many people find helpful.

It's pretty slick and cool. If you want a gmail account, it's reasonably easy to get one using gmailswap which I posted in a procrastination link a few days ago.

Gmail swap worked for me! [Big Grin] I got lucky and found a guy giving away free invites on my first page load. Now to wait for the invites that I can give out...

Posted by Suneun (Member # 3247) on :

excellent, slacker =)

I haven't gotten any invites yet. I heard a rumor that you only get them if you use the account a lot, which doesn't bode well for me. I check every day, but I've only sent/received about 5 emails so far.

I have an account, they've upped the # of invites lately. I also sent myself an invite (ssssshhhhh!), and secured myself the username clever.dan [Smile] I'm hoping to nab another HR email in the future.

You sent yourself an invite? See, that's what's wrong with this whole country [Wink]

I am crossing my fingers for an invite...I now have a blogger account, and supposedly they give them to blogger users...but I have not gotten one yet.

I will be posting another Joe Schmoe 2 review tonight, so maybe that will trigger google to give me an invite.

*crosses fingers*

I think gmailswap is the easiest way to get an invite

Aww, pook-ster, you jealous of my enormous... 1GB of mailbox space?

STN, what was all that "give me an invite or I'll shoot you" talk from a couple days ago? Hmm?

I totally whored myself out for an account and it totally worked! The guy didn't make me go through with my offer either. He just found it amusing enough to give me a free invite.

I'm still wondering if I'll get a nasty letter from Cox later about another gmail site I was working on when I found the gmail swap site.

There's some sort of contest that if you match a random number, you get a free invite. Since I've got Firefox (and have uber-l33t tabbed browsing), I loaded up 150 tabs and kept refreshing them every few seconds. I gave up after 5,000 hits on the site without getting the number (but I had a few that were close).

I guess I'll have to start pumping mail through it in order to get lots of invites (and yes, I'm going to be greedy and give another to myself [Evil] ).

Posted by NdRa (Member # 2295) on :

It's not that hard folks. I BS'd my way into earning 3 free invites from 3 different people in less than 24 hours.

Posted by Suneun (Member # 3247) on :

gmailswap rocks* =)

*especially since that's exactly what I used to get my gmail account. I offered hematite.

Funny that ever since the invite frenzy came up, no one is whining about the ad/privacy issues.
