Dodgeball only has to make about $20 million in order for the total grosses of all of Ben Stiller's 2004 movies (Dodgeball, Starsky and Hutch, and Envy) to exceed what Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban made in its first week.

I loved dodge ball, all the bleeding hearts that whine that it is too mean annoy me. Hell, I was a small kid in elementary school through high school. I did not out grow most people until college. Even as a small guy I loved dodge ball. As long as the school does not do something stupid like using a hard ball instead of a typical kickball type thing you can't really get hurt any worse then kids frequently get hurt messing around. Hell...I hurt myself on my bike on many occasions and I don't think bikes should be banned.

I agree, lupus. I was also a tiny wimp, but I loved dodge-ball. Except when I went up against the 17-year-old 7th grader we had. That guy was *mean*.

In elementary gym class, we had these fluffy mop-like balls that we got to use for dodgeball. I always liked to pretend they were tribbles. Then, years later, I had a tribble (that my mom bought me because I felt so bad that she got to the Star Trek convention without me) that squeaked when you squeezed it. My friend Kat threw it really hard at my head one night and broke it.
Is there some sort of sick irony in that or am I just a really big nerd?

I'll bet I was smaller/skinnier than any of you growing up, so nyah. Wanna fight about it? Of course not, because dodgeball taught me anger management skills. If you can dodge a brawl, you can dodge a ball.
Seriously...I couldn't throw very well or catch very well, but I had a blast regardless. Scrawny kids get to practice actual, you know, dodging.

Well, I think Ben Stiller has already outgrossed Harry Potter. Some of the scenes in There's Something About Mary already have Harry Potter outgrossed by a long shot.

The explanation for Stiller's career resides in a couple of phenomenon:
1. The Peter Principle: People rise to their greatest level of incompetence. Look at the lack of acting ability/talent of most of the action stars (Wham Bam Van Damme, Governor Arnie, Vin Deisel, Steven Seagal)
2. Family: Look at who his parents are. Look at the abundance of offspring of successful actors who have little or no talent. Fortunately, most of these flame out pretty quick (like most of Martin Sheen's kids). Unfortunately, some of them hang around forever (like Drew Barrymore).

I'm not convinced that either applies. Certainly Barrymore hasn't promoted herself the way Stiller has? And, she's certainly got more screen presence than Ben - doesn't need to don a silly mustache.

I actually think Stiller is a pretty good actor, he just (in my opinion) keeps doing crap roles. I don't know how much of that is his choice and how much is just fate, but I think he could rise above those crude teen comedys he's most famous in. The Royal Tenenbaums is a good example of him doing just that.
I like Ben Stiller. I thought "Meet The Parents" was hilarious, and I have every intention of seeing Dodgeball, especially now that the reviews are out. It seems most critics actually like it.
It'll probably be a rental, though. My movie money is saved for Spider-Man 2 and purchasing a ton that I'm behind on (I haven't bought The Two Towers yet, let alone ROTK).
