The first 5 people to email the address in my profile get them.

I am not selling them. This is free. I will only be sending out one per person.

Also, if your email address is not easily identifiable as your hatrack handle, please let me know who you are...

And for everyone else, my new, official e-mail is hobbes7714@gmail.com (7 is my lucky number, so I figure two '7's followed by 2 '7's is good, I've been using it for 5 years now). [Big Grin]

For those that got invites:

Gmail has been issuing new invitations to existing members every three days or so. When you get them, share the love.

Remember to only use your powers for good or for awesome.

Gmailswap is an extremely easy way to get one. I offered funny family guy quotes and a get out of jail free card, and got 3 invitations in return.

I should have a couple of extra invites in a matter of days, or whenever they arrive. If anyone on hatrack still doesn't have one by then, drop me a line.

Can someone explain to me the point/appeal of GMail? It's like regular POPMail, only lamer, right? I mean, it's basically a larger version of Hotmail.

Does it do your laundry?

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I think the appeal is that it is invite only right now, so you think you are cool if you get one. It isn't working with my browser or something, because I still can't make it work, when I go to the page to relogin it tells me it is loading, and gets stuck. Someone mentioned something about cleaning the cache but I don't know how (yes I am a bit of a computer moron)

Posted by Frisco (Member # 3765) on :

Tom, since you don't like webmail in general, I doubt you'll be able to see the appeal. [Smile]

I, personally, want it for the search functions. And the 1G storage space would be nice, not that I'll ever need that much. But I could send myself lots of stuff that'd be available to me anywhere I can get net access.

Posted by peterh (Member # 5208) on :

Breyer, after you get that error message, try refreshing your browser. It seems to clear the problem sometimes as well.

Tom, it works as a jumpdrive if you want. Also, many functions of gmail have yet to be activated; such as pop3 support. In addition the ability to get the good usernames is a reason to desire an invite.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

refreshing doesn't work at all, that's the first thing I tried. neither did getting offline. Well now that hotmail is increasing I won't be as upset if it doesn't work, but I hope it does soon..

Posted by Kayla (Member # 2403) on :

Tom the reason I wanted one is because this is the only place that the email address for my husband's business is available. Otherwise, he'd end up with some weird name or one with 9843213 after it. My yahoo id is kaylafromhatrack2001 because kaylafromhatrack was taken! Can you imagine?

Tom, he spends enoughmoney on it already. It's really more of a hobby that is barely making money (and even then, it only makes money if you don't count his time and forget about how much he spent on tools so far.) And on top of that, any money he makes is then spent on poker. I'm not about to pay for anything else for it. But, he's really good at what he does. I should put that picture of Patrick's family up. I didn't want to send one off into the wild blue yonder without knowing it would get used, thus the tossing in of the invite at the first one who showed themselves to be awake.

1. The messages displayed as conversations feature totally rocks. It's esp. nice for the listservs I'm on. I thought it would be distracting, but it's nice to go back and re-read portions of previous messages. For those who haven't seen it yet -- you only see the text of the most recent message -- the previous messages are displayed as little tabs. You can expand the conversation to show all the messages. Or click on the tabs to look at individual ones.

I love this feature for my private e-mail conversations as well. I no longer have to search my sent box or in box to figure out if I've already mentioned something, etc.

2. At first I wasn't sure if I liked the archive idea because it kicks the messages into a place where you don't immedietely 'see' them. But now I love it -- it keeps my inbox clean. For example, with the listserv, if I'm not interested in replying to a particular conversational thread, I simply archive it after reading the latest posts. If someone else posts after I've archived it, it pops back up in my inbox with the new message -- plus the rest of the conversation.

3. At first I was a little perturbed that you couldn't create individual folders. But as I started using the "tags," I realized that they are even better. The tags essentially act as a folder. You can click on a tag to see all the messages in that "folder." But the cool thing is that you can have messages with that "tag" in your inbox. No need to remember to check various folders for messages you want to read or reply to. Keep them in your inbox until you do what you want to do with them. Archive those you don't want displayed in your inbox.

And of course, just like with folders, you can set up filters so that tags are slapped on messages that contain certain properties.

4. The search function is much quicker than Outlook, Eudora, Yahoo! or Hotmail.

Finally, there is one thing that I don't like -- you can't save drafts of your messages.

Zalmoxis,

When they first sent me an invite to send out, I didn't even notice it! Because it doesn't come as an e-mail - it just appears on your gmail page as a link. The link goes away when you don't have any more to send out. It appears above the listing of mail.

Just so you know, in case you didn't.

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but it's the only thread I see dealing with Gmail.

At the end of the beta testing, what happens to our accounts and the emails we have stored in them? Do the emails get wiped out, or can we keep them when Gmail goes live?

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

I would go to this page and ask them Derrell.

But I'm assuming that everything will transfer fine -- they are just tweaking it now -- not making major revisions. They would warn us if there was any danger of the entire database of mail being lost.

The first two who e-mail me [address is in profile] will receive them.

As always, don't forget to check your bulk/trash/spam folder since Gmail's e-mail system for the invites is often interpreted as spam by other systems filters.

Lalo, my account did the same thing. If you're still having problems try signing into your account through https://gmail.google.com (with the "s" after http). It should work after that.

edit: took out the w's. should work now.

Valentine:

No problem.

---
I still have one more invited for whomever e-mails me. But it looks like there are quite a few still floating around here. Could it be that Hatrack's appetite for gmail accounts has been satiated?

Posted by MidnightBlue (Member # 6146) on :

Crystal: do you really want four Ws? And there isn't usually a www before it, it's usually just http://gmail.google.com
I wasn't sure if the Ws are supposed to be there, the address doesn't work for me with them there, so I'm just asking.

I have a bunch of invites, if my family doesn't want them. They must be moving on to the next part of the testing. Email me at the address in my profile if you'd like one and still don't have one. (Is there anyone left?)

Edit: I didn't realize it automatically made links out of URLs, so I had to get rid of a period. And all that time I was using the little button at the bottom. [Roll Eyes]

Edit: I really should check my posts to make sure they make sense. [Wall Bash]

Yesterday I had none. Today I have five invites.

Anybody still want one? Email's in the profile. But be sure to make the subject line obvious (using the word "Hatrack" helps), so I don't think you are spam.

Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :

rivka, that's funny because I just emailed you and asked if you knew anyone who needed or wanted an invite. I have 7 of them to give away.

1. Sorry, Coccinelle. I was thinking you already had one. [Eek!]

2. Five? Seven? SixandwhodoIgivethemto? I got one! ONE! How is this possible?

kat, last week I emailed myself many many emails with BIG attachments.

I think they think I'm a major user. [Wink]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I send about fifteen e-mails a day - fourteen of which are usually to the same person. Is that why?

Posted by Tammy (Member # 4119) on :

I rarely use mine and I received six. [Confused]

Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :

I don't know how Gmail decides who to give the invitations to. [Dont Know] There are only 2 people that I email using my Gmail account, rivka and Raia. In fact, I haven't gotten email from anybody else at my Gmail address.(derrellf AT Gmail DOT com) I feel so unloved. [Wink]

I only got mine this week, and the only email I got was when hatrack sent me a new password because I changed the email address in my profile. Somehow I got six invites. I did, however, add a lot of people to my address book.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

You know what? I bet that is what governs invites...I haven't gotten any, but my wife imported like, 100 to her addresses, and got 6 invites.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

That's it. gmail is going to be my Hatrack address.

Posted by Zalmoxis (Member # 2327) on :

TheTick:

I don't think that's it. I imported a ton of contacts from my Yahoo! account just a day or two after they first offered that feature, and my first invite didn't come until 2-3 weeks later.

I think that it's relatively random. And that, clearly, they've greatly expanded the number of invitations this past week.

The only set pattern that I've been able to verify (based on my experience and that of other users) is that the more quickly you use your invites (and they are accepted) the more likely you are to get more.

BTW: [strike]I still have one invite left[/strike]. EDIT: I'm all out for the moment.

I think at this point we're going to have to start fighting over people to give invites to. Just take a quick glance over the last 30 posts or so and see how many of us are offering 5 or 6 of them. The market value of the gmail invite has tanked, I'm afraid.

Posted by sarcasticmuppet (Member # 5035) on :

Actually, I was just trying to do something fun. I wrote a limeric for mine. I figured most people would just go for the freebies, but a few might buy into it. Whatever.

sarcastic DOT muppet AT gmail DOT com. If you want one send me a line. If not, I'm sure I can muster some RL friends somewhere to take some off my hands.

Looks like Hatrack has reached some sort of critical mass where we have enough people to generate all the invites we need here.

I just got six g-mail invites and will be happy to share them with anyone who e-mails me at [my username here at Hatrack] at gmail.com If I don't get replies within a few days, I'll probably give them away to real-life friends, so act now!

I'm getting a little concerned ...

I had no invitations for weeks and weeks ... then I got one and offered it here. Carrie took me up on the offer.

Then I get 6 invites and offer them here and at another forum. One person from the other forum took me up, bringing my invite total to five. I just checked and I have six. Maybe this is how those people who posted on the gmail swap site got all the extras. Although if I get another invite everytime I give one out, I'll never be done. [Eek!] LOL

I have six more invites.

Gmail has changed from the cool friend that invites you to the fun parties to the friend you avoid because he keeps pushing Amway stuff on you.

Hmmm..

I haven't had any more invites to give away in ages. Or perhaps I just didn't check it often enough and never noticed them........

Not that I currently have anyone on my list that still wants one.....

More invites available if wanted.

Also -- wondered if the rest of you Gmail users were aware of this:
Case of the Disappearing GMail's Solved!

That link is just to my co-worker's Blog -- but what he said is basically all along he has been emptying his "sent items" on his Gmail, and the way Gmail is designed, that wipes out the whole conversation (not just the ones you sent -- but the whole back and forth).

Now it has a message warning you of this, but prior to this, it did not have that message.

Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :

couple of differences: 1 gig storage space, and conversations are grouped. You e-mail someone, they reply, you reply, etc. - those are put together and tiled. Kind of a cool feature.
