What does Phoenix do in terms of 4th of July celebrations, and how many of you don't have plans as of yet? I've been debating going to Tucson that weekend, and realized just how stupid of an idea that really is (I-10 is a deathtrap on good days, I can't imagine it on a traveling holiday).
I'm up for a BBQ or cook out or something if any of y'all aren't planning to be part of the exodus. And then, fireworks. Or something.
Post ideas, suggestions, and excuses. And don't make me resort to E-mail...

In high school, we would just drive up one of the mountains, as high as we could get(ahem-quiet), and watch from up there.

Mt. Lemmon?
I used to love going up there, especially at night. Tucson is a beautiful city from Mt. Lemmon at night.
The usually clear sky as a background, all the city lights twinklin' like diamonds....stars, stars and more stars.
Sometimes I miss Tucson. The smell of the desert at night.
No mold.

Tammy, I was talking about Phoenix. We would go up Camelback or "Lina's Mountain," which we called the mountain behind my friend's house. I can't remember the name.

Besides, I don't think you can get to Mount Lemmon without doing I-10, which he wants to avoid.

Usually about every city (and some of the casinos, race tracks, etc.) has fireworks, so depending on where you are, you can see several different shows from your house (when I was a kid we used to sit on our house and watch several different shows). I rarely go to any of the shows - fighting heat and traffic and parking and crowds aren't really my thing. I don't really have any plans (and I don't know if slacker will be working that day or not - he normally works both Saturday and Sunday nights so after church on Sundays, he crashes until it's time to go to work again).

I once watched multiple fireworks shows all over Phoenix and the surrounding towns from the top of ASUs "A" mountain (I can't remember what it was really called. The one that has the A on it, and the stadium is built into.) It appeared to be a really popular thing to do. The question is whether you wanted to haul chairs or carry blankets up it. Otherwise you had nothing to sit on.

Actually, we fly out from Phoenix, just before midnight on July 4th. I don't know exactly what time we are planning on leaving Tucson to drive back up, but we might be free for a bit to do something or meet people at the airport.

My friend is getting married in Tucson on July 4th (at 8am in the morning). I'm the maid of honor. I'm arriving on the 1st (in Phoenix then driving to Tucson) and immediately getting whisked off to a dress fitting. I expect that most of the time will be taken up in pre-wedding hubbub which is why I haven't touted it specificallyd as a chance to meet jatraqueros. Much as I love you guys, this is about my friend, not me.

The "A" mountain is in Tempe, right over the bridge. It would also be really neat to climb up into Echo Canyon at night,but you would need a headlamp, because you need your hands to climb. I love that place.

Mack, you would LOVE the climb up Camelback. Lots of people run it as part of their daily routine. it is this huge(well, I think 100 feet, not SO huge) mountain that rises in the middle if the city. You feel like you are back in ancient times, while surrounded by a sprawling, modern city.

Well, I guess anything is possible. You could know her. But Tucson is a decent sized city too, and I doubt you travel in the same circles.
I'll be in Utah (no real chance to see PSI though) from the 3rd to the 6th.
The biggest fireworks are downtown Phoenix and at Tempe town lake. Chandler I know is planning a show, and like has been said, most cities do their own little shows as well.

The shape of the mountains in the Phoenix area always makes me think that a giant baby just dribbled dirt through his hands to make the hershey kiss-like formations and ridges.

I think she does do some Teaching assistant work at the U. If it is outside at 8 in the morning, it could likely be her.

My parents still live in Phoenix. I lived there from eighth grade through high school, but needed to be back east. I still love it there, though, and the rest of my family plunked down and that was that.

Looks like I'll be working my normal week on the 4th (no spare time for me to enjoy the fireworks), so I won't be able to have any fun that weekend.
Also, Camelback mountain is alot taller than 100 feet. It's about 1,200 feet above the valley floor.
