1. Append "(a)nator" to the first syllable of your name.

or

2. Append "miister" to the last syllable of your name.

eg. The Moose-miister

Remember that guy on SNL a long time ago who was the annoying nickname guy? He'd pester people all the time, like:
"Stan! The Stanmeister... Stan Stan the party man.... "

That was one of their funnier sketches, I think.

Simply add "-o" to the end of the name. For example, "Jon-o," "Bob-o," "Annie-o," and so forth.

Its not really important...I was just randomly curious.

But whatever you do, you should not make nicknames for your friends based on embarrassing words about bodily functions that sound like your friends' names. Not even if you have a friend name Morgan. This is a way to scar your friend for life.

scifibum - SciFi bum? Maybe it's because as a non-native to the English language I only ever knew the word "bum" in the anatomical meaning of "buttocks"... But it always reminds me of Shen. Is this intentional?

And then James Tiberius Kirk, who (while others have called him "JTK") signed his messages "j_k". Because he himself struggles with the "Tiberius"?

Thank you, Tom. I did look it up before making the post, but had not known until then. Not a term that is deemed important in traditional education, I guess.

The question of intent remains. Is there a thread where people explain their nicknames? I couldn't find one closer to the topic than this... But would really like to know how everybody chose their names.

Mine's from a video game. I don't do nicknames very well, nor passwords, so both tend to be whatever pops into my head (or line of sight) when the moment requires it. I've literally had passwords like 'dirtycoffeemug' before. I just hate being tied down by anything, even titles I chose myself.

I think we did use to have a screen name thread before, but I don't remember. Anyway, have you already explained your name somewhere?

Wait. That sounds vaguely dirty. (I'm sorry, Christy!)

My actual given first and middle names are kind of a chunky Germanic one and a smoother English one, so I picked two with similar feel. As I recall, this disconcerted Noemon a bit, because it looked like a real name, but I didn't mean to mislead. Just faffing around on the 'Net in the wee days.

I've had so many pseudonyms for playing around here that I couldn't list them all. Go by different names all over the internet, actually. I like taking the secret paths inside the walls.

Edited to add: I never change names for unsavoury reasons, though. Think golden retriever, not Voldemort.

When I was 11 or 12 years old, I was writing fan fiction for the video game "Freespace 2", and needed a screen name to post under. Up until that point I had gone as Tiger Shark, but that was already taken, so I picked "Dogbreath" based on a humorous song I had written for my dog, Clyde. (This little guy along with 10 year old me for reference)

I thought it was goofy or funny in the way an 11 or 12 year old might, it's kind of embarrassing now.

He grew up into a big, hairy, loving, goofy looking mutt with a thick undercoat that ws always shedding. He was a great friend, too, especially for a boy like me.

He loved playing outside and wrestling, but was never too rough, and loved nothing more than playing soccer with the neighbor kids. (He didn't really understand the idea of teams, I think, just loved the idea of everyone running while chasing a ball back and forth and yelling and laughing) In the fall, when I would rake the leaves in the yard into a big pile, he would take a running start and jump into the leaf pile at full tilt, rolling around, on his back legs kicking and tongue lolling with his mouth open in a huge smile, enjoying both the cool weather and the feel of crunchy leaves itching his back, as well as the joy of foiling my attempts to get my chores done in any reasonable amount of time. (I would usually acquiesce and jump in the pile with him)

He was the only dog I've ever known that howled. He would usually do this whenever I would sing to him: he'd throw his head back and harmonize with long, mournful choruses of "Arrrooooroooorooo!"

He was really chill and patient as well, we would dress him up in basketball shorts and a t-shirt and sunglasses, and he's calmly lay on his back on the couch wearing that ensemble while we took pictures. He was also pretty cool with being hugged, or having his tail pulled by my bratty little sister, or being blow-dried all fluffy and ridiculous and given beauty treatments after his baths by the same.

He thought of himself as a pretty sly dog, as well. As a puppy he slept on my bed, but when he got big and much too hot for me to deal with (especially on hot summer nights, where having him in bed was like having a big, hairy space heater set to 102.5 F in bed right next to you), I made him a nice bed out of some old fuzzy rugs, placed behind my dad's recliner in the corner of our family room. Sure enough he would go lie down there every night, and be curled up there every morning, but somehow, mysteriously, there would be a fresh batch of dog hair on the couch every morning. Eventually, one night I snuck down the stairs taking care to avoid all the creaky spots (a skill that came in handy when I was a teenager) and found him sprawled out on his back on the couch, fast asleep. I went back to the stairs and creaked one of the steps and then came back around the corner quickly to see him stealthily roll off the couch and slink over to his dog bed... I cleared my throat and the sheepish, guilty look he gave as he slowly turned his head and realized I had witnessed the whole thing let me know that he knew the gig was up. (not that it stopped him from doing it in the future )

He always seemed to understand when something bad was going on, or when someone was sad and needed comforting. After my brother-in-law died when I was 15, my sister came to stay with us for a while and he would go and put his head in her lap and just lay next to her for hours at a time, like he was trying to soak up all the sadness and hurt so she wouldn't have to feel it any more.

I wasn't there when he passed away, a few years ago, I was off in the Marines at that point. He had a stroke, I think, and one morning my sister woke up to find he wouldn't eat anything, and was barely able to walk. She called the vet to make an appointment to have him put down, and then as she sat on the floor and cried he crawled over to her and put his head in her lap and started licking her hand, trying to make her feel better about whatever it was that was making her so sad.

I still think about him a lot.

KarlEd revealed the source of my screen name in my very first thread. AFAIK, the only use of the term 'pharoahic' in Hatrack history.

Also, that thread is a fine example of the sort of constructive, well-reasoned, non-polarized political discussion we used to have around here a decade ago </end sarcasm>.

And by extension, it can mean "layabout". That's basically how I meant it. I originally picked it because "scifiguy" was already taken on eBay, which was the first place I picked a screen name that I didn't intend to throw away.

Later, on sakeriver, I changed to my real first name Keith because I figured the unintentional association with nether parts was probably not worth the continuity. But there are a few other pockets around the internet where I'm still scifibum (and the only one, that I know of).

Mine is an interesting story.

I was on Hatrack with a different nickname, when a thread started where people were taking Jedi names as Alt Registration names, and others were takin Sith names.

This was not long after Star Wars Episode I came out.

Long time ago.

My brother and I noticed that Darth Maul hardly spoke, so we joked around that the reason was his high, effeminate, voice. You can't be a villain, I thought, with a high effeminate voice.

As a joke I created Darth Mauve--the gay Sith.

I had lines like, "I put the Sith in Sissy" and "I love lines of men in pvc." I used lines that today would get me shot down as a homophobe.

And I discovered that Darth Mauve and his pink lightsaber, soon became the villain that everyone--sith and jedi--wanted dead.

The more flaming I pretended to be with my Darth Mauve, ("You think Vader invented the cape look? Honey, I was prancing around in a cape long before that boy.") the more both sides attacked me.

I put Darth Mauve away when that thread died. However, years later, someone hacked some of the accounts here and I couldn't get my password to work with my main nick, so I went with my alt--Darth. And I've been Mauving it ever since.

Funny though - in 5th grade I had someone tease me that I wiggled my butt when I walked. I was into big long steps around that age, too.

When I first registered here at age 14? it was for BattleSchool, and I was QuickSilver (I think, it's been a Hansen's age since then). I had a magical experience with some captive wolves one summer when I worked at Minnesota Conservation Corps. I researched wolves, who are just the coolest BTW.

They mate for life, are affectionate with their pups, always have both a male and female leader, take down prey much larger and dangerous than any individual member of the pack could safely take thru the use of team work, they march at the speed of the slowest members, never leaving old or young behind...heck, just look what happened to Yosemite when they had to air lift in wolves from Alaska because the packs of prey animals were getting sickly. Wolves were kings of the forest, getting respect from cougars and bears alike due to their pack attack. Wolves are cool.

I had trouble getting along with...everyone...so I picked LoneWolf...but soon changed it because being alone was not my goal, and stone, while hard to work with, can render beautiful results if given time and patience.

@Wolf: After learning why you chose the "stone", I like it even more now than I did before. It reminds me of Phildel singing "you know even stones change shape in time".

My friends used to call me "Cheeks" due to my rosy cheeks. Whenever someone not in the know heard it, they thought it was referring to something else...
