What do you call 'em? I call 'em "Suicides".

For the painfully uninformed, we're talking about when, at a self-serve soda fountain, you put all or almost all (usually excludes teas, lemonade, gatorade, and water) of the pop into your cup.

I never knew it had a name. *shrug*

yeah we definitely used to call them suicides at camp ~10 years ago.

Edit: For regional reference, I went to camp in Maryland but it was with a lot of East coast folks.

In Western Kentucky, they're known as "graveyards".

Suicides.

I've also heard them called "Swamp Water."

We called 'em Suicides or Swamp Water when I lived in Hawaii. I can't recall the last time I had a soda since moving to the mainland, though.

We also used the name "suicide" for jumping off a ropeswing into a river and deliberately doing a belly-flop.

We called them "suicides" when I was growing up, both in NC and in central KY. But I really like the term "swamp water" for it. Wish I had thought of that when I was a kid. [Big Grin]

When I grew up in Alabama, we called them suicides at the local skating rink. I don't know what they call them here in Virginia because now I am old and uncool. Good thread though. Made me smile first thing in the morning to think about it. Hadn't been that far down Memory Lane in a while! [Big Grin]

San Diego, Riverside, and Lake Arrowhead, CA. Suicides.

Suicides. My kids currently think this is the coolest thing ever. Since they've gotten tall enough to reach the drink thingy they love to add almost everything into their soda. Swamp Water is a great name, though - especially since that's what it always looks like!

While working graveyard shift at a 7-Eleven in Southern Nevada, I dabbled in the art of "selective suicide". As long as we brought our own and didn't use the 7-Eleven cups, we were allowed to drink all we wanted. Mmmm....Cherry Slurpee with 7-up or coke, Mountain Dew and 7-Up. Mixing in proper proportions is an art. No Dr. Pepper, though. By itself it's okay, but mixed....ew. *shudder*

Nothin' like a tall, frosty, carbonated glass of suicide on a hot summer's day!

(That's what I called em too, and have never heard another term for it.)

Sounds like a bad line from an emo song... >_>

EDIT to add: I'm SO writing that song. <_<

OK, How about we try a little experiment and see if we can institute a linguistic change across America. From now on, let's all refer to these concoctions as "swamp water" and encourage any young 'uns in our sphere of influence to do the same. It's a cooler name than "suicide" and isn't as morbid. Also, it has that "gross out" appeal that kids seem to enjoy.

But Karl, we don't have swamps out here. I vote for "pond scum." Everybody got ponds.

But yeah, we called 'em suicides.

Nope, KarldEd. I like Suicides more than Swamp Waters.

Was I the only one who called them tornados?

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Yep. Only one. What a silly name anyway. You really should call them "Swamp Water". [Wink]

I guess I must be "painfully uninformed" then. [Roll Eyes]

[Razz] I'll have to ask somebody I know who works at a place with a soda fountain.

Seattle: graveyards.

Actually there were different names for different ones with different base flavours....

I grew up in Northern Virginia and it was "suicides". I guess it was less common in Utah. How exciting is it to mix sprite with minute maid? There actually are tons of Mormons who do drink cola. But I moved to Utah right before my senior year (ouch) and I decided to be kind of anti-social.

As I recall, though it has been years since useing the term for such a drink, in my family we called them suicides. However they weren't usually every soda, just like three or more, I think the most I put in one was maybe six different drinks, but then again it was a pretty limited selection, and of course I never used diet. I mix my drinks all the time now though, and even mix things like soda, orange juice and gatorade together. I'm relally weird though. Oh yeah we also used to call them "twisters" or "tornadoes". Hmmmm, suicides, tornadoes, and twisters, those are some pretty severe names for mixed soft drinks.

I think maybe we took our soft drinks to seriously based solely on those names. [Razz]

Aha! Someone else who calls them "graveyards"!

I thought I was alone.

I wonder if the term comes from the tab levers at the top, each of which gets pushed.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

I bet it's more likely that the name comes from the same place "suicide" comes from.

Mom: "You drink that and it'll kill you."
Kid: "Awe Mom! It's good."
Mom: "Go ahead if you want to kill yourself" OR "Go ahead if you want to commit suicide" OR "Don't blame me if you end up in the graveyard"

In my Scout troop, we called them "kamikazes."

Of course, after a graveyard shift and struggling to make it to class,

Mellow Yellow + Sprite + Powerade + flavor = morning nutritional supplement. [Hail]

Well, the only term I have ever heard for it is "graveyard."

In Texas we call them suicides.

I also used to engage in selective suicide while working at 7-11, Cherry slurpee with Coke is nummy. [Big Grin] (Was it just me, or did the cherry always have an aftertaste like it had been spiked with vodka?) The Dr Pepper guy swore by Big Red and Dr Pepper mixed but I always thought he was demented.

Suicides in indiana, but I always thought they were disgusting, if I wanted coke I got coke if I wanted something else i got it. I did mix slurpee flavors though, coke and cherry, or strawberry and blue rasberry.
