Dearest Sophie,

As you may well remember (being the extraordinarily advanced young woman that you are), it was a long night. From the waters breaking with a champagne pop at 2:25 this morning all the way through to the coup de gras 4 & 1/2 hours ago, you were the star of the show.

How did you do that trick, by the way? You know, the 9lb, 4.5 oz gift from a 95 lb little slip of a thing like your momma? Land sakes, child, if we'd have known your plans ahead of time, we would have been worried silly.

As it was, your mother carried through like a real trouper. She just kept going and going and going, fierce and strong and so focused on you that there might have been nobody else in the room. Aside from your daddy, of course. You'll be remembering his calm voice and gentle touch for some time. He was the ice chip guy. [Smile]

And never a whisper of trouble from you, at least, not until the magnificent denouement at the end. Even then, you were a champ. Pink and pretty and bawling fit to raise the roof off that whole hospital. What a little spitfire.

Speaking of champs, how about that mother of yours up and walking not two hours after you were born? Good grief, she's as tough as nails. You take right after her.

Well, now that you're into the whole nursing scene, I don't suppose I'll be holding you in my own arms too often. That's okay -- you and me, we understand each other. (I was the one that got you to stop crying. [Big Grin] )

Time to check back in with your folks, little Sophie. Many happy returns of the day, and all the best of the world for your precious own self.

Much love,
Aunt Sara

*Hello, Sophia. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, Sophia, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, Sophia -- :
'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'

Congratulations Tom, Christy and Sophia-

Christy, I understand that the plus side to having big infants is that they tend to stay comfortable longer in their own skin. By that I mean, they sleep longer, don't get chilled as easily and are generally happy.

It was true with my kids. Jacob, my second child was 9lbs, 2oz; two pounds heavier than my first. The difference in temperment was like night and day. Jacob was so content that he rarely cried. I worried until I talked to the doc and she told me that it's an advantage of "growing them big".

Again- congratulations

Dear Sophia,

Welcome to the world. Let me give you a few pointers, as the Jatraquero closest to your age.

First, try not to cry much unless you really need something. Letting Mom and Dad sleep is a Good Thing for you, because they'll be happier when they're awake.

Enjoy being small (HA!) for as long as you can. My older brother says chores suck.

You're lucky your mom is breastfeeding you, 'cause formula is Nasty. My mom gave me some once, and I yakked it all over her. Besides, boobies are so much nicer. Of course, I'm male, so I may be a tad prejudiced on this issue.

Speaking of which, you're pretty cute. I'm the guy in the top photo. Wanna go out sometime? [Big Grin]

Sincerely,

Thomas

Anyways, just wanted to throw you a warning... get ready to have stupid people ask you how much you liked the show Golden Girls when you tell them Sophie's name. I have had more people than I care to remeber tell me that they loved the show too. I mean, most young men just love shows about four really old women still trying to score. [Roll Eyes]

Tom, when she gets old enough to sit on your lap, get an old keyboard and cut the cable off it. Then she'll sit in your lap and happily bang the keyboard while you surf the web. As long as you're using your keyboard, she'll be interested in hers.

Unless something shiny or extraordinarily dangerous catches her eye. [Smile]

I lived with some friends after their daughter was born, and she loved the computer, mainly because everyone paid so much attention to it. So I took one from work for her and she would happily "type" for as long as a half hour, which helped her daddy get some computer time.

I just finished reading the journal and it is *wonderful*. I'm going to send a link to my brother who is expecting to welcome his firstborn this autumn.

One comment, hopefully reassuring: Our daughter Rayne was a lot like Sophie about sleeping. Her first night in the world, she would only sleep in her Daddy's arms. In short order and desperate for sleep, we let her sleep with us. I worried about this excessively, but didn't worry so much that I lost sleep (which was really the point when you think about it...) Our pediatrician was reassuring at the 6 week checkup, saying that it wasn't at all a problem right now, and just to try to get her used to sleeping in her crib by the time she was 2 or 3 months. We did, and now, while she likes to climb in bed with us, it's only with a mind to play and cuddle.

Congratulations Christy and Tom!! This parenthood thing is so great, and I'm so happy that you've got such a good baby to start your parenting adventure.
