In another thread, Lupus mentioned that he shopped at a store called the "Kash and Karry". Elizabeth responded, saying
quote:
Kash and karry. Good.

My favorite name around here is Spuds and Buds.

Which got me thinking--what are some of the "best" names you've seen for convenience stores, bars, and the like? The best I've seen in the States is a drive through liquor store called the "Honk and Holler". In Thailand I used to walk by a place called the "Happy Drink Bar Beer". I've always loved that one.

Isn't there a "Hinky Dinky" somewhere? Not here in Kansas, but it seems I have seen that in my travels....and thought it was just the weirdest name for a store. Like baby talk.

Hm, Hinky Dinky? Never heard of it. I could believe it though.

Mack, I know! Every time I hear someone refer to going to the Piggly Wiggly I just cringe. Who would name their store "Piggly Wiggly"?

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

aah... according to the web, Hinky Dinky's are stores in Nebraska....I should have known....

owned by Nash Finch company.

Let me see if I can think of others..

In the town I grew up in, there was an apartment management company that had a reputation for being very unplesant to work with--they were frequently unreasonable, would be rude for no particular reason when you called them for something, etc. They were called Property Management Services, but their signs featured their acronym, PMS, more prominently than their name.

In Galena (well, closer to East Dubuque) there is a Family Beer and Liquor. Dan and I thought that was really funny. [Smile]

In Astrkhan Russia there is a mall who's name sounds like--"A Store."

As in, "Where do you want to go shopping?"
"A Store."
"Well, duh.."

There is also the "Dew Come In" Restaurant and Bar not far from my home.

Jesse's contribution (he's too lazy to log in): In Taiwan there was a coffee shop below our apartment called "Is Coffee" in English.

(Anna Jo reminded me of this in the "Fine Quality Products" thread) We also have a store nearby called Tucson Hobby, but at night only "Tucson Ho" is lit up. You'd think after all these years they'd have fixed it. Maybe they always leave before dark?

Yeah, my most memorable "some of the lights don't work" restaurants were (saw them myself, not friend-of-a-friend) Black Angus and The Big Yellow House.

My brother in law emailed us a picture of a restaurant in San Francisco called "Phuket". He didn't provide any explanation, and since we were familiar with the place for which the restaurant was named, and so the proper pronunciation (Poo-khet), we didn't know why he was sending it to us. It was only later that we realized that he thought the "Ph" was pronounced "F".

Saw a cafe once called "Chat 'n' Chew" . Kind of liked that.

There used to be a coffee shop here in town where I live now that called itself "The Rusty Plow" - and, yup, they had one mounted above the entrance.

I might get myself in trouble with this one, but there used to be (and may still be, for all I know) a truck accessories shop in Simi Valley, CA, called "Mother Trucker". I swear.

And a bar in Downey, CA, called "Someplace Else" -presumably because men could tell their wives they were going "someplace else", not the bar, and not be lying, exactly. Oh, and there used to be a bar in Fresno called "The Apartment" - probably the same theory.

And a toy and game collectors' shop in Fresno is called "Oh, Grow Up" . And another shop in Fresno named "Come On-A My House" after the old Rosemary Clooney song - not sure what they sell.

I've always liked odd church names myself, and my all-time favorite comes from Downey, CA - "Fire Baptized Holiness Association".

On Sanibel Island in Florida some years ago I noticed a store that sold sea shells and had the name: "She Sells Sea Shells By the Sea Shore."

Posted by Ron Lambert (Member # 2872) on :

This wasn't actually a store name, but a store slogan used by Big-O Tires. On the sign, under the name of the store, was the slogan: "Best place in town to take a leak!"

Posted by PSI Teleport (Member # 5545) on :

I think the name "Big-O" is funny enough by itself.

In Astrkhan there was a Texas restaurant.

We knew it was a Texas restaurant because if its wild west decour and its Texas Flag hanging behind glass in the front room.

However they didn't serve any steak.
No hamburger.
No beef at all, accept what appeared to be swedish meetballs, coated and fried and put on a stick.

Yep, they had what "Mary" asked for--more meats on a stick.

Rats, there was this little mom and pop resturaunt in the hole in the wall middle of nowhere in Vandalia, IL that had a very amusing name (where my company decided to put a factory because it was cheap 'cause nothing is there)

I can't remember the name though. I believe it involved pie somehow though. I know I posted it here, along with my mono diagnosis, but it was over a year ago so the thread has gone into the Great Beyond. However I remember Kat thinking it was as funny as I thought it was.

There's a restaurant around here called "El No Pal" and we tend to call it "The Frendless Mexican." That non-official name has spread.

There's also a bed store called "Badcock" that we pass when going to Rome. I always giggle, but then I guess my mind's in the gutter. [Smile]

Olivia, you think your minds in the gutter.

CT- Darn you! Now I want a 'rita, too. We really must split a pitcher sometime. Then do Karaoke. *snort*

Banna-- A significantly more 'fun' person than me once said, "All of us are in the gutter, but some of are looking at the stars" (or something along those lines). Buttita? REALLY? *mad giggle*

Somewhere I saw a sign that said "Highway Rubbers" for a tire store.

Down in NC on the outer banks, theres a small chain known a s the Try My Nuts Co. It's a store that sells mainly nuts and hot sauces. THey also have a very funny (although sometimes inapropriate) clothing line. The way they name their products is quite funny also. Ex: A bag of tralmix ith everything inside dipped in white chocolate = White Trash.

When I first moved to utah there was a bar called "My wife's place". 10 years later, they had painted over the "my" and replaced it with an X. I used to walk past it every day going to college.

We saw a "Gas and Go". The rest of that trip, to my mother's chagrin, involved rhyming variations that captured the gist of it.

That could be the last name - our bishop's last name is Dick. Yep, Bishop Dick. Straight face, y'all.

Straight face? Try keeping it with this one: My aunt's gynecologist was named Dr. Fillerup. This is the absolute truth.

Also, there used to be a podiatrist in Fresno (may still be) whose name is...wait for it...Dr. Frederick J. Kreuger. People kept stealing the sign from in front of his office.

Oh, also in Fresno, a veterinarian named Dr. Gene Poole.

I'm frankly surprised that nobody mentioned Smut 'n' Eggs. I have been told by a fairly reliable source, that ther eis such a place in Madison, serving breakfast food while showing porn.

There's a used/consignment clothing shop in Bloomington called "AMUSED Clothing," with enough different fonts in amused for it to look like "am used."

There's also a Brave New Deli. Coincidentally (or not?) they're right around the corner.

And down the street from a coffee house called Soma. I was somewhat wary of the coffee at first--though I suppose as a drug to keep the population happy and stupid, caffeine may or may not be appropriate. [Big Grin]

Olivetta,

Providence has Legs'n'Eggs - would that do it for you? Only, it isn't the name of the strip joint - it's what they call their breakfast show. Breakfast buffet and strippers.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Just the other day, I was thinking "You know what would go good with these pancakes? A bunch of naked ladies, that's what." Thank god the the good folks of Providence have seen fit to fill that need.

Seriously, that seems...odd. How many people are head down to their local strip club for breakfast?

"Eat Here and Get Gas" is a combination restaurant and gas station at the intersection of 28 and 31.

"Here We Grow Again" is a children's resale shop.

The "Grocery Sack" convenience store has a motto - "Hop in the Sack"

"Microchips" is the Kindercare I used to work for that is located in the parking lot of Delphi Delco Electronics.
