A story of grandeur, a story of passion, of peace. Of epic adventure and of tender romance. It has been hailed as the story that defined the life of one, a magnificent achievement for all Hobbes-kind, and the best writing since last week.

Join us as we follow the path of one young-man, determined to find his funny. It had been lost to him, it had been stolen from him, and it had been denied to him by the unfunny around him; but now he’s about to begin a journey that will take him through the most melodramatic obstacles of his life. All he knows is that at the end of his travels, he will have it back.

A Hobbesy production, from the creators of such epics as “Cousin Hobbes explains binary” and “Daily cycling trivia (learn something new everyday)”. Coming soon to a thread near you.

I really don't think you ever lost it.

Did I give away the ending?

How'd he know his funny would be in a can of shaving cream, specifically? There should have been more leadup to that.

Hobbes, the best way to get your funny back is to realize just how funny life can be. Also, try not to compare your current funny to others. I did that myself once. Bad idea. [Smile]

T-Smith, when it comes to the funny, does size really matter.

Um.

Ok, so maybe it does.

Nevermind.

I looked in the Wham-mobile, darling, and your funny is definitely not in there.

Posted by T_Smith (Member # 3734) on :

Yes. Exaggeration is a HUGE, phenomenal part of funny, Dan.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

You didn't think that thread was funny Annie? [Frown] I'm defaintly going on with my quest then. *treking-across-the-vast-expanse-of-life emoticon*

You should rewrite wham mobile so that it is actually an abstract hanging sculpture about the british boy duo. Says I. I don't know if my funny exceeds your own.

I think the funny is like fly fishing. You don't strike on every cast, but it's a beautiful thing when you do.

I've been a connoisseur of Hobbes' funny since he was about 14. I think the extensive use of spell check that he's taken up lately is one big big no no that's damping down his funny.

The one I'll never forget is the post in which he discussed those arcade machine that have stuffed animals and a little grapple hook which you must manipulate in order to pluck out a stuffed animal and drop it into the exit chute in the given time. He said that the only animal accessible always seemed to look like a cross between a pigeon and your stomach. I still giggle when I try to picture that stuffed animal, but the creative spellings have always made his writing come across to me even funnier and more charming.

So my suggestion for your quest is to throw away that spell checker and give us the original unedited Hobbes. That casual insouciance with which the fanciful creative spellings were tossed off was a great deal of the charm.

Just for the record, I loved the whammobile.

AK, the thing is when I don't use spell-check I tend to get yelled at, so I use spell check. [Dont Know]

Day 10
Short, one-liners attempted in various avenues of discussions. Attempts at being-pithy and light-hearted. Perhaps the responses where acually false-negatives, they have those, right?

Dobbie thread created, response: nill. Maybe my topics need more squid in the title, squid's a funny animal I hear tell. And just to make it interesting, I'm running out of water.

just watch out for those Giant Squid , Hobbes. I think they expect to be taken seriously.

AJ

btw, did you watch the Lance Armstrong Interview yesterday?

Yes indeed I did, recorded it too in fact. Not that funny though.

Day 15
Short, apparently un-witty phrases thrown around in the last week, little to no effect besides one thread that got derailed, but no sign of the funny. Resorted to elevated language and farce but the funny was not to be found, a most elusive beast the funny, one can glimpse it, yet never lay one's hands upon it. A devilish hunt this is, yet I remain strong in pursuit despite my failure so far, Rome was not built in a day, though it's looking like my quest may be on a similar time to scale as Rome.

This sounds like someone chasing a great White Whale.

The Whammobile is funny. But I'm guessing it wasn't Hobbes' idea to create it or call it that.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

Well actually it was both. So there's a point for me, except that one of the few people who seems to like doesn't seem to think I'm funny enough to come up with it. [Grumble]

Wow. You took that and made it funny! And you got your funny points for the Whammobile! I take back all the questionable things I said about you, Hobbes!

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

You said questionable things about me? [Frown] Well now I have a self-esteem problem too.

Hobbes [Smile]

Posted by JonnyNotSoBravo (Member # 5715) on :

Yes, but even that's funny because it's the unquestionable things I said that you should be worried about!

After attempts both in real life and online, I've discovered that perhaps it's not me whose lost the funny, but that everyone else are all just a bunch of jerks who wont laugh at my hilarioius jokes. [Grumble]

It is so odd to see that sentence ending with the smiley face.

Hobbes, you haven't lost your funny! Remember how funny you were during the D&D game?

Hobbes,

on the way home from KamaCon, Ivygirl and I stopped at this little Dollar Store in a small town (we were out stretching out legs) and they had TONS of smiley face stuff there. Every single one made us think of you! [Smile]

I SO wish I had stopped there on the way up. There was this adorable little pin-on button of a smiley face and the eyes lit up -- I would have loved getting it for you if I was on my way to KamaCon..

After spending several weeks working on technique and dilvery I elicited my fair shaare of laughs from those on whom I foister my attempts at humor, but I've discovered that my weakness comes in the funny for big grouops, and for one-on-ones. Solution? Listen to Woody Allan's standup while doing stuff in my room. [Big Grin]

Hobbes do you watch Star Trek TNG? This reminds me of the episode where Data has Guinan helping him find his funny.

Ha ha. Yes, Zevlag. I remember that episode.
(and am still in mourning over the loss of that show.)

That was a great episode. I love Data.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I'm not really sure I would have noticed that your funny was gone if you hadn't begun complaining about it. You can amuse some of the people some of the time but you can't amuse all of the people all of the time. Says a person who doesn't even think Robin Williams is funny.

Data's funny is the only thing that makes "Generations" remotely watchable.

Heh, even I remember that episode, and I haven't watched TNG in at least five years, probably more. That was a great one.

Not a TNG fan, now TOS, that's a different story. [Big Grin]

I could probably pull better Nielsan ratings durring the weekday dead times though...

Gah! You aren't supposed to tell me this. I haven't finished buying TNG yet. I have 5 of 7. And I still need Babylon5 and DS9. gah!

Journal entry, October 30th:

After a few months of tweaking my technique, I've been unsuccessful in creating a new, funnier me. My humor recently has attempted to be more of the dry wit variety, perhaps a bit non-sequiter. I’ve found an improvement in my own enjoyment of my jokes, but to the best of my knowledge, this change in tactics has gone unappreciated by others. I now am running out of different ways of being funny, perhaps I should just accept my own limitations as a truly, unfunny guy, and embrace my inner engineering ness.

I say screw 'em Hobbes. [Smile] If you get more enjoyment out of your funny, then you have succeeded in finding it!! Shouldn't we celebrate that?!

I think we should!

Rivka, a sympathetic, patronizing *pat, pat*

[Razz] [Wink]

Narnia, it's a step, yes, but until someone else is amused I'd have a hard time feeling validated...
