I know that many of you have met before, but since this was my first experience it was way weird meeting all these larger-than-life people.

I think my two biggest revelations were RRR and Marek. I had no clue that either of them were shy.

That said, I had an awesome time talking to and meeting everyone.

My biggest Hatrack gathering revelation was how cheap a drunk Ted is. Man, it *still* makes me laugh just thinking about it. All over the subway! Ha ha ha!

I mean, I was totally sympathetic at the time, but the price of drinking with a non drinker is a mocking that lasts a life time.

Anyway, carry on with your KamaCon revelations.

My biggest revelation was just how non-shy I was around all of you. Maybe the 'Katharina incident' broke the ice early enough. [Wink]

Mine was meeting all of you... like Space Opera said meeting all these larger than life personalities that you've known... that people really are real! And that you better think fast because you don't have a word processor to help form your thoughts! [Wink]

How we all know each other but don't really Know each other. That was part of the thrill. As they say the foundation of friendship is common shared experiance, so that's why doing the games and the dancing and the trips to the City were important.

Part of it for me is that all these cool people that I think highly of were in the same room and if I could compare! But after the outer shell of shyness wore off (and after a shot of Jagermiester) everything was cool and fun and I cuold get to REALLY get to know people.

After I got to know people I could start taking the mask off and be more comfortable with folks. [Smile]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Yes, very true! I had an absolute blast! My main complaint was all the people I didn't get to speak to for nearly long enough. So many cool fun people, so little time!

And y'all know how to play some fun games. I have three games that I must go out and buy now! (Tom will be shocked, but none are D&D-type games.)

Posted by Space Opera (Member # 6504) on :

Telp, I totally relate to the outer shell of shyness. I don't think I knew how shy in person I am until Mack looked at me during lunch and asked, "Are you always this quiet?" The beers at the bar later definately helped. What I thought was so great about the Con was how concerned everyone was about EVERYBODY having a good time. Every single time I started getting homesick there was someone making conversation with me or trying to get me to play a game, and I know this was true for others as well.

There were so many wonderful engaging people to visit with and so little time for me to do so. I had a wonderful time and I am so glad I had a chance to meet those of you that I did. Here is a bit for the OOC thread. AJ, your bedroom was AWESOME!

Posted by Bob_Scopatz (Member # 1227) on :

I was painfully shy well into my 30's.

Then something snapped.

Oh well...look at me now! I CRAVE attention!!!

Anyway, I'd just like to say that I enjoyed meeting so many Jatraquer-os/-as in person. I can't really single one person out to say that this was the biggest revelation to me. It was just a lot of fun and I'm sad that we couldn't stay longer. But I'm glad we got to be there even for the brief time that we had.

I can't imagine a group of funnier and smarter people. And we're all so darned good looking too!

[Big Grin]

I do have to say, though, that I haven't laughed as hard as I did during The Eye of Argon. Given that most of us were just making stuff up to shout out during the competition, I have to say it really was impressive.

That and just sitting around talking and playing games were my favorite times during the gathering.

I could've done with a little more attention paid to me by the group in general, but other than that...perfect. [Big Grin]

The Katharina Incident

It was early Friday afternoon, and we were going down the elevator discussing who was on my list that we needed to be concerned about. The Tick was listed as "making his own way".

I went out with Kama and Kat to pick up Saxon75, Juliette and RRR. Kat got shotgun. So as we are leaving the hotel parking lot this person wanders into it on foot with a large backpack on his back and a laptop over his shoulder. I knew instantly it was the Tick because he had a "making his own way" look about his face.

I said, "Hey that's someone for Kama Con. So I pull up next to him. Kat then rolls down her window, and bats her eyes and says flirtatiously, "Heyy what's your name?" He got a slightly confused look on his face said "Mike" and we all burst into laughter and said welcome to Kama Con.

Kat can really bat her eyes when she wants to, that's for sure!

AJ

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Katie bats those eyes for the camera EVERY TIME. It's amazing.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

I would like to put forth my explanation.

I had wandered the hotel a bit looking for possible Hatrackers before. I saw Ivygirl, so surely Farmgirl was around here somewhere. Downstairs, I saw a nice-looking lady with red hair sitting by the pool, and I march up confidently, all ready to say hi. As I descended upon her, she looked at me confused, and it dawned on me that this was not the behavior of someone who was planning on meeting strangers this weekend. I panicked and veered off at the last second.

---
AJ says The Tick will be making his own way as we are getting in the car. As we pull out through the parking lot, she points to a man walking by and says, "I'll bet that's the Tick."

There are three possibilities. (1) This person doesn't belong to us, and for the second time in half an hour, I freak someone out; (2) This person DOES belong to us, but is not the Tick. Even so, it's a good bet his name would be Mike. Or, (3) It's the Tick.

I can ask if it's the Tick. What a weird question - I don't think I've ever said "Are you the tick?" I'm not starting now. But we need to know who this is - how to find out? Oh - yeah.

"What's your name?"

DOESN'T THAT SEEM LOGICAL?

*grin* It was, he belonged to us, and we hold up Kama for him to see.

I don't know that I can say that a person was a specific revelation for me, but I did have a revelation in the elevator. I can't remember who all was in the elevator, but I think it was Ken, Ni, B, Mayday and possibly some other. Maybe Mack and Nate? Anyway... I was in the elevator and I just thought, "Tomorrow I'm going to have to leave these people." and then I thought, "I don't want to." and that was pretty much the revelation. I felt like I kinda wanted to make a Hatrack commune and spend a long time just hanging out with people.

Also, there was another revelation when Tom_Davidson and I had a conversation which went a bit like this..

Tom: You know, you're pretty much exactly how I'd pictured you.
Me: Really? (pause) Is that good or bad?
Tom: I don't know that it's either good or bad. It just is.

Oh, and there was that time when Papa Moose picked up the guitar and started playing "Country Road" by James Taylor and he and I did a bit of an impromptu James Taylor sing-along. [Smile] Wow. I really had a good time.

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

Yeah, good thing that was the Tick or she could have gotten arrested by them.

My revelation--You are all a bunch a Kama-Kazee's and I am getting stuffed on all these sour grapes.

Next time I will be there, with Sasha and Cat.

So was I, interestingly enough. Loudly. And probably off key, but there was no one around to hear me, so no problems there.

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Another revelation:

That RRR was so extremely shy! I don't think I heard two words from her the entire time -- and I still don't know her real name.

It surprises me that Tick said he was non-shy -- I also thought he was extremely shy. I was hoping we were "including" him enough that he didn't feel left out.

But maybe everyone just seems shy in comparison to me (except TomD, of course -- not a shy bone in his body)

Farmgirl, I mostly meant in the smaller groups, I talked a lot more than was typical for me. I'm sure I still qualify as very shy in the larger group setting though. [Big Grin]

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

Two other things I learned at KamaCon:

1) I have to go out and buy Apples to Apples. That was just a great game.

2) I need a laptop. So I can sit at a gathering like that and check in on Hatrack and type messages to people right across the room from me (like rivka and RRR did)

My biggest revelations were fiazko and Frisco.

fiazko is fabulous, and I can't believe I missed her pretty much completely on Hatrack before. We still didn't talk a whole lot at KamaCon, but she's very, very fun.

Frisco is just as gorgeous, smart, funny, and insouciant as you think he is, but still not wisenheimer enough for AJ.

My biggest revelation was seeing the surprisingly large number of people in our group who don't have the survival instincts to leave the building when the fire alarm goes off.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

I suspect in most cases, they were leftover college survival instincts saxy. When your dorm gets prank fire alarmed like twice a week, you learn to sleep through it.

(does this mean you and Juliette are safe back home?)

AJ

I think my biggest revelation was that I was able to actually learn almost everyone's names - I'm really bad at that. Also, as soon as Telp walked in the room, I knew it was him. No idea how, as I've never met him or seen a picture that I know of, but I knew it was him.

Also, Bob has a longer ponytail than I expected!

Last but not least, it turns out Mooselet is just as adorable in real life as he is in pictures. No, I'm wrong. More adorable. As are the other members of his family. So lovely, all of them.

All of you were so lovely! [Big Grin] I had such a wonderful time.

Anyway, I love celia's plan, but there are a couple of flaws.

1. Idiots are prime consumers, as they are the only ones who fall for stupid advertising.

2. Idiots are needed for the jobs that cause smart people to jump off roofs, such as in the food service industry.

However, on a small scale, pruning just a few of the most undesirable from the herd, that would be wicked.

biggest: just how hot frisco actually is. i knew he was attractive, but goddamm, i wanted him to start taking off clothing every time he was in the room.

next biggest: nathan has contacts. how did i not know that?

Personality-wise, celia, you were pretty much what I expected, but your height (I was expecting you to be shorter [actually, I think I already told you that]) and voice kind of threw me for the first few minutes.

Actually, a lot of people were different heights than I expected. I had no idea, for example, that Hobbes is so tall.

yeah, i've been told i sound like a cheer leader, and when i'm tired, like the voyager chick.

i don't think anyone really surprised me personality wise. i did a good job of getting people from pictures, and of walking past you a few times without even looking at you because i knew that attractive woman next to you wasn't with us. [Smile]

I love that all the frisco-drooling is happening when he's in New York, and probably missing it all. After all, if he read it, he probably wouldn't fit into his new hat anymore.

You know, even Juliette commented on how attractive Frisco was. I thought he was good-looking enough, I suppose, but I have to say I'm a little surprised at just how much drooling is going on. Heck, even Moose told him how sexy he was. [Dont Know]

I didn't do much ogleing, and while i did not notice frisco being particularly hot, I noticed that he didn't seem out of place pushing a pretty girl in a shopping cart, or petting a scared baby rabbit, so clearly a complex individual.

He never hit me in the head with the frisby, and had a sword in his trunk, which is pretty cool.

Anyway shocking things, I was shocked at how many people stayed up late each night playing games, why i am alone in so many late night chats? [Dont Know]

Age is relative. As long as your relatives get old, you don't have to.

Actually, the cake picture works like the picture of Dorian Gray. The cake will age so you don't have to. Soon the frosting will be all a mushy brown color and there will be green mold over everything...

Because the Hatrack men are sensitive enough and have been thwapped enough for being shallow that they are wary of the objectifying drooling the women have no problem with doing.

One of my moments of KamaCon was the sight of Happy Camper blushing while four women surround him and tell him how hot he is.

I would have to say that my conception of you was significantly different than the real you. The difference in my view was your sense of humor and your delivery. In person you were more forceful than I had imagined. Your humor had a bit more bite than what I gained from the board. I don't wish for this to be misconstrued so please understand I found the real you engaging, personable and giving.

basically what punwit said. So much humor is missed over the internet. You have the perfect deadpan delivery that doesn't come through in prose. At the beginning I kept taking you way too seriously when you said something semi-outrageous, just because your delivery is so matter of fact.

I didn't get the whole "rivka is different in person" thing, but that might be because dkw already told me how much fun you are.

And we've had some fun here on Hatrack with various discussions.

In thinking abou this some more, my biggest revelation was the wide diversity in ages. I knew that a few people were older than me *cough*sndrake*cough* and that most of the people are around twenty-something. But it was really cool to have people from their teens to their *cough*whatevers*cough* all sort of hanging out and using this as a reason to get together.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Ah, I never did clarify the Rivka observation.

What I expected: Somewhat of a shy violet, with subtle deadpan humor inserted every now and then.

What I got: All the deadpan humor, none of the subtlety. Which is actually much funnier.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I keep telling you people: I don't do subtle. Sad but true. My mom does, my dad doesn't; this is one of the many ways I'm like my dad.

And I actually am pretty shy, when in a room with people I don't know well. Ask Ralphie about that Shinda I was at so briefly, when I was still very much a newbie. But if I am around people I am comfortable with -- and I'm pretty comfortable with most of y'all, at this point -- there is no shutting me up. [Blushing]

My only true revelation was how comfortable I was around everyone. Except when the discussion turned to my "hotness"... [Blushing]
