Ok, I've found a great location. It's located about 10 minutes outside of town on 446. The name of the campground is Paynetown. It is run by the Indiana DNR (department of natural resources). They told me to count on 3 tents per site, or one RV on an electrical site. The Sites are 16 dollars a night for none electrical, and 23 for electrical. We can get some none electrical right next to electrical, so now all I need to know is how many people are coming.

good prices! sounds like a great idea. Breyerchic was saying you could get tents from the Boy Scouts. How big are these tents and how many will fit on a site?

AJ

Posted by J T Stryker (Member # 6300) on :

They're 4 man tents, and I could fit 3 with fire, or 4 with out, only limitation is, we have to get a campsite for every six people in the group.

i am coming. i have a list of people who i thought had said they were or were thinking of it. it's 18 including the maybe's and the not overnights, but the pretty definates are 12. i would say get three campsites, maybe one electric, but i don't know. i'll start looking at other stuff, what do people want to see in the area, we have the iu campus, with a cool art museum, the famous sinking library that isn't really sinking, all sorts of restraunts, oliver's winery, i don't know what you would want to see but we have it.

oh and stryker, refresh my memory, how close is paynetonn to the lake, i'll probably go out there sometime soon just too look.

Isn't Paynetown right on the river? I seem to recall that's where I always started off from on canoing trips. I guess it'll be too late for canoing, though.

what i have so far

definates: blacwolve, snowman, stryker, fugu, aj, me, space opera and hubby, jenny g, husband, and kid, and fizako

the maybe's are marek, happy camper, beatnix, and alcon, toretha, fizako, kyrie

the daytime ones are celia, kyrie(?) and megan

my mom told me we can use our screen tent, which isn't great for sleeping in but could be done, and is big enough most of us could sit in it during a day in case of rain.

there is no home IU game that weekend, it is also not the weekend of the Hilly hundred, so that cuts down on traffic.

there is a tour at the IU art museum at 2pm on saturday.

Yep - we have our own tent. How are we handling food? I didn't know if we were each going to just bring our own, pitch in, or what. Anything is good with me, as long as I get to eat.

I have talked to lots of people, and I was thinking we could meet at a grocery or Sam's or something, and stop to buy stuff so we don't have lots of duplicates, but have what we need. My biggest concern is a stove or grill or something, so can someone look into bringing one of those, our grill is a pain to transport. We could probably go out or have take out for one meal.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

breyerchic and I were talking about everyone meeting at a grocery store (or sams club) before we actually headed out to the campsite, so everyone could chip in for food at that point.

Once again, no one lives near me. I'm quite enraged.

Hey, anyone want to go camping in Utah the third weekend of September?

this is mostly a note to myself, but also a bump. I can bring this stuff: Screen Tent, 5 chairs in a bag, tarp, gas lantern thing, small gas grill (really small but usefull for several things), fairly large cooler (fits two cases of pop), and my little red wagon. Let me know if their are other normalish things we would need, because we are closer than most people. Mom will bring a van load out on friday, and come pick it up sunday.

Also, the sinking library sounds interesting... but maybe only to me [Smile]

edit: I also have a bunch of my own camping supplies, tent, stove, grill, lanter... air bed thingy.

There is an urban legend thet the IU library is sinking into the ground due to an error on part of the architects. In theory, they didn't take into account the weight of the books while disigning the building.

Posted by cyruseh (Member # 1120) on :

yeah, most likely, people from columbus or east of cincinnati could drive to meet me in cincinnati, and then I could drive out in my car to the campsite, to split up the driving. This is all just ideas right now though. Wont it be a little COLD?? [Smile]

Okay, printed driving directions.... this is potentially doable although I'm hesitant to say yes or no (because knowing my luck, something will come up again like the last time...) If I do make it, though, I'd be a Saturday daytimer only and probably have the kidlets with me.

When we get closer and I know better if I'm a yes or no, then I'll repost and confirm, as well as find out if anyone wants me to bring goodies (the edible kind... LOL)

I would be able to bring a six-person tent and some other stuff, but I doubt I could take off work Friday of whenever it is. Bills must be paid.

I could probably also pick up at least one person from Cinci or elsewhere along the way, as long as they did not mind staying only one night. My truck is extended cab, but the back is cramped. Gas money would be appreciated but not required.

I have:

Tent
Portable stove
Some extra sleeping bags, but not sure if I will be allowed to borrow all of them
Possible extra air mattresses, if my dad lets me borrow them
Ridge rest
Chairs
Coolers, but I would rather not take them if possible
If for some reason it was desired, I have a candle lamp.

I will have to make sure I have nothing really big happening that weekend, but otherwise I am a definite for the 23rd-24th. So I guess that makes me a probably.

Beyerchic and I are arguing, would you guys rather look for items on a scavenger hunt, or take pictures?

Stryker

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Breyerchic thinks that it would be easiest and cheapest if we had a scavenger hunt in which pictures were taken digitally of cool places in town from a list. But styker thinks that you should dig in the trash and bring back an empty bag of popcorn from an evil kerasotes theater.

Posted by blacwolve (Member # 2972) on :

It's a picture scavenger hunt. It makes a lot more sense than having people spend tons of money on worthless stuff. And it can be really funny, it allows much more personality, since you have to take pictures with you in them.

Posted by J T Stryker (Member # 6300) on :

here is my list:

an IU item (no clothing), a crown, a bribe for the judge (no money, or illegal items that would warrant more than 60 days in prison), a wheel barrow, a picture of kirkwood (printed and not from digital), proof that BHSS is the best highschool in town, a bottle of cheap vodka (with a reciet, if theres a tie the cheapest bottle wins), a used simon gift card, an essay on why Stryker is a cool name, something with the BSA symbol on it, a napkin from pizza magi, a popcorn bag from the movie theatres, mary ellis's singiture (we'll have to hide her), a pink flamingo (plastic), a childrens book (must have plenty of pictures so i can understand it),

and creativity gets lots of bonus points

Posted by J T Stryker (Member # 6300) on :

i like my list better, we cane break into 3 teams and see what happens

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

sanity wins. We are combining the lists, a bloomington person in each group, the last item will be "a hatrackers house" but it can't belong to the person from that group.

See, this is NOT how I imagine being "unplugged". I'm thinking, aren't there like, WOODS or anything? I'm willing to plan outdoor adventure activities, but cartripping is going to be complicated.

One of the things I like about camping is that it is slow, and very laid-back. We absolutely must have a campfire, for instance. With S'mores. And music. Anyone play folk songs? And I'll be happy to let Abby (the six-year-old) lead a hiking expedition. You'd be surprised at what this kid knows. A couple days ago, we were talking about memes.

I'd bring my kayaks, but we don't yet have a carrier for them.

I'll call the breyerchic and see what she's got for Outdoor Resources.

would your kids like it if I managed to bring a pump and balloon animal balloons?

Kid would love, husband would hate. He has hyperacusis, which is an extreme sensitivity to noises. Balloons make him jumpy, because they have a tendency to pop unexpectedly and give him excruciating pain. Balloons, in our house, are Evil.

Of course, he might not be coming anyway, because of working on our house. In his potential absence, I'll try to bring my teenaged sister.

If you do bring balloon stuff, of course be careful we don't leave any bits around to harm the local wildlife.

Posted by Toretha (Member # 2233) on :

Yeah, I'm good with picking up balloons. After babysitting for a family with a lot of pets, I'm very used to picking up balloon bits.

Doesn't sound like a fun problem for your husband [Frown]

Posted by Jenny Gardener (Member # 903) on :

No, it's not a fun problem. But he uses earplugs when, for instance, we have to go see Abby sing in the kindergarten program. We don't go to concerts or big games or anything. It also seems to be connected to either his allergies or stress levels, since it is worse when he is weaker emotionally or physically.

Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :

Yeah I will gladly participate in activities, but the whole point of having the camping trip is just sitting around out in nature and absorbing and enjoying it IMO. We DID so much running around at Kama Con. I just want to BE. Also splitting up the group means that we don't all have similar shared experiences and memories, and feel like we've missed out on something.

AJ

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Ok I see what you are all saying, but I just thought that we should have one activity, and the idea of a scavenger hunt became very fun in our eyes then got played with for long periods of time and over did itself. It can probably be less than 2 hours, on saturday early afternoon. The hikes will be great too. Jenny, I'm about to email you my cell phone number, it's better for reaching me right now.

I have yet to be anywhere with stryker that didn't include a campfire, smores, and singing.

Ooh and go Abby, I don't even understand Meme's.

Wow, I think I remember someone saying this before the scavenger hunt idea, Beyerchic.

Jenny as far as outdoor resources go, we have a multitude of options in the area. I always have and will continue to enjoy the Charles Deam Wilderness (five minute drive from our campsite). The wilderness has many well well kept and well marked trails that I frequent. There also is the fire tower which is quit entertaining. Our Campsites are also on The Monroe Reservoir.

Edit: Now I'm content

Does anyone coming have a problem with dogs? We're thinking of bringing along Max. He will be on a leash at all times and is very friendly. Hiking with him should not be a problem, since we used to take Licorice (who was smaller) on hikes quite often. I just wanted to make certain everyone is cool with Max tagging along.

So dogs are allowed at the campground for sure? I don't think I'd bring all of mine. It depends on who is showing that weekend. Dogs are allowed for sure (must always be on leash, but that's the only rule they list).

All Bloomington people available, can we try to please have a meeting October 2nd or 3rd, I don't care where. Just to go through some plans. We can call other's, to go through other stuff.

Oh yeah and I need to stitch the hole in my sleeping bag (thanks for the reminder AJ).

I have a new sleeping bag too. It's still in its box. This is to prevent Steve from stealing it and wearing it while he sits in his chair at his computer. While I originally didn't mind him doing this, the sleeping bags always end up with a pile of nasty dirty socks at the bottom. I discovered this quite by accident when we went to Dana's house for the last hatrack gathering!

Reminder bump!

3 PM tomorrow in the public library!

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I've made an agenda, and have a list of things to go through. It shouldn't take too long.

Umm stryker, I wasn't trying your method, I was making fun of it.

Sorry I won't be there guys. Trust me, I'd rather be there telling Sarah to stop freaking out then at my Great Grandmothers funeral, but well to quote her, "It's about dam time". So ya, campsites have been taken care of, tents are readiy availible (i still need to know how many we actually need, I've got plenty lined up, but i'm not bringing all of them unless we need them.)

I'll be at the funeral this weekend, and won't be able to make the planning meeting

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Uh, just so we can actually find each other, if you see this Megan we're going to be up in the reading area to the west of the scifi/fantasy section. Maybe we'll pull a copy of ender's game or some other OSC book off the shelf and use it as an identifier [Wink] .

I meant to try to teleconference, but I've been out of commission this weekend. I've got laryngitis and a wicked cold. At school on Wednesday and Thursday, I had to use a personal microphone! I looked like a rock star but sounded like an orc. On Friday, I stayed home and hid in bed.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I will send you an email as soon as fugu posts the update (he took notes). You aren't alowed to be sick so get well soon.

I used a personal head set microphone for 4-H demonstrations, it's so much fun to look like a rock star, especilaly when you are talking about something mundane like brushing dogs.

Sarah, for the umpteenth time, Rhaegar has an E! And like ell I didn't kill anyone, well not physically yes, but I slew Russell twice mentaly.

Hi. I'm eating a roast beef sandwhich right now that I made and cut myself. Advantage of working in a deli is you can cut your own roast beef and cheese. I don't know why I'm posting this in here. It's just a really good sandwhich and I had to say so SOMEWHERE.

That said... uh... have fun everyone, and I'm a bit jealous of you. Pack sandwhiches!

[Angst] ok

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

In defense of Sarah, Rhaeger, "hell" is spelled with an h, and "mentally" is spelled with two Ls.

Not only that, but there's a comma fault in your post.

Just sayin'. [Big Grin]

All of you will be so proud of me, I bought a copy of ender's game today, and plan to have it read by the campout.

Oh and Russell needs to post the minutes from our planning meeting.
