But is it preordered from Hatrack's Amazon link?

[Wink]

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

Why, Caysedai?
I hope mine can handle it. It has an 800 mhz processor...
But, if it can't... then I can resist the temptation to buy it.

Argh, mine either. Looks like you need 2 Gigs. Yikes.

New computer time, I think.

I would love to be able to buy a new computer just so I could play the Sims 2 - but it's not going to happen, at least right now. [Frown]

It's not a time waster! Those are little people with HOPES! And DREAMS! And MEMORIES! And FAMILIES! How could that ever be a waste of time?!

[runs off to play with the Sims 2 Body Shop]

Seriously, folks, I haven't been this excited about anything since about Christmas 1989.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Exactly.

If I bought this game, I would cease to function IRL. It would suck me in, and my children would DIE.

Posted by vwiggin (Member # 926) on :

Yes, but Sim children are more fun anyway. [Smile]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Is Sims2 going to be a subscription-based game? Because so far, I have held to my resolve to never buy a game that I have to keep paying for.

If I'm paying for it every month, then I'll feel obligated to make sure I get my money's worth out of it. I'll have to spend a certain amount of time playing. It will become a chore, and I don't like chores.

Posted by Little_Doctor (Member # 6635) on :

I'm too busy waiting for Battle for Middle Earth to worry aobut the sims. Of course, the release date on this game hasn't even been decided. I can't wait anyway!

mph, The Sims 2 isn't an MMORPG. No subscription. Though you will eventually feel compelled to buy a neverending series of expansion packs.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

A lot of women have posted to this thread. No WONDER the Sims + expansions has outsold Myst -- cross gender appeal!

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

I'm so excited about it myself ! Hopefully I got a new job, so I'll be able to buy a new screen AND a new video card (the old one couldn't handle the Sims 2)
I hope time will fly 'till friday !
After that I won't have any social life I think. [Big Grin]

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

I don't really understand the appeal of the Sims. I've played it, and it left me utterly cold. But I suppose it's a natural extension of the SimCity concept (and I like SimCity), so I can see why it's so popular.

I don't know, I'm kinda busy waiting for Empire Earth II myself. [Big Grin]

Crap! Why did you have to tell me that, Dog? You rat! I was ignoring all the Sims 2 hype because I though it required a subscription!

Now I have to go out and start drooling too. [Grumble] [Wall Bash] [Grumble]

Posted by Mabus (Member # 6320) on :

I really enjoyed the old Sims, though I still haven't managed to get all the expansion packs. But I'm dubious about having Sims die of old age...I like to keep my Sims.

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

There will be a cheat to keep your sims from aging. But I think I will love it. The only way the game became boring to me was precisely the fact that your sims didn't change.

Posted by Mabus (Member # 6320) on :

I was in favor of Sims growing up--just not growing old. That would have been enough change for me. Unfortunately, from what I have heard the cheat will turn off both.

Posted by A Rat Named Dog (Member # 699) on :

I think that inevitable death is great for several reasons:

1. It allows powergamers like me to explore the failure states without feeling like we're losing. If everyone dies eventually anyway, then the point isn't perfection, but rather to have an interesting life before you die.

2. It keeps the world constantly changing, to stave off boredom.

3. Family trees and genetics are an awesome new addition, but it would feel weird and offputting to have nine generations of the same family all living in the same neighborhood, looking the same age [Smile]

Well, I bought some strategy/SIMs (and an RPG) at Goodwill last week! Five bucks a pop for:

1) Alpha Centauri + expansion
2) Majesty: The Kingdom Sim
3) Planescape: Torment
4) Stars!

The guy who donated had taste!

No, but they can figh, do "woohoo", and if someone is really angry with the others he can leave the house. Also the teenagers can go away from home and even be brought back by the police.
There will be alien abductions as well, and alien babies.

Posted by Puppy (Member # 6721) on :

There will be alien babies, but only men can be impregnated with them.

Posted by Synesthesia (Member # 4774) on :

Oh, freaky...
How can I resist the TEMPTATION? [Wall Bash]
Will we still be able to put mp3s in the game?

while sims2 should be interesting... my excitement for it is shadowed by my excitement for MYST 4!

Posted by Puppy (Member # 6721) on :

Who let Myst people in here? [Smile]

For me, The Sims 2 is fighting with Fable, Call of Duty: United Offensive, and Rome: Total War, all of which come out within a week of each other. Imagine, the best management sim ever, the most ambitious action-rpg ever, the expansion pack to the best-handling FPS ever, and the sequel to one of the best strategy games ever. What the heck am I supposed to do with my time?!

And don't even get me started on Burnout 3, which I just spent last night playing, instead of preparing my early-morning seminary lesson.

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

Syn : yes. I already converted a lot of my CDs in that purpose. I knew that only men could have alien babies, but I learnt so much things about the Sims 2 by going to the official site and by reading a whole bunch of reviews that I could speak about it for hours. Let's just say it will be TOO GOOD ! And I can't wait 'till Friday !

Posted by Turgan (Member # 6697) on :

No no nononononononono
If you've EVER played Black And White, you will realize that Fable will kill them all.
Sims 2 will come in second.... the rome thingy... then the other thingy...
dead last at place # 4,567,848,675,943,947,597 will be "Barney Rides Again: An I Love You Fairy Tale"

The Sims 2 are totally apart of the other games if you ask me. It has such a big feminine public ! As for me, I've never be hooked up by a game as I am with the Sims 1, and come on, the 2 will be so better that I will be glued to my computer ! I played Morrowind for a time, but it wasn't the same addiction. It was much easier to go to bed playing Morrowind than the Sims.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

See, I played the first Sims game for all of two days, thought the acquisition of new stuff seemed rather pointless, and moved on to better things. I've never comprehended the appeal.

Posted by TheTick (Member # 2883) on :

I'm the same way Tom. I felt it was an intriguing idea, but it never held my interest. Until my Sim caught themselves on fire trying to cook. [Wink] But then, I build roller coasters destined to fail in Roller Coaster Tycoon, so what do I know?

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

I never really got into the "guiding their lives" part of Sims, but I spent many a night designing houses.

Many a night.

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

I heard somewhere that the Sims are like the child of a doll house and tamagoshis. It's exactly that, I think. You can design house, buy fourniture (even change their colors of the colors of the doors, windows etc in the Sims 2) and you can make your Sims live their life. The game became boring to me when I got "the trick" and was able to get a Sim family out of big danger in a few hours. But with the Sims 2, we're going to do that again and again, since when the first Sims will be fine they will have children that you will have to take care of too, and Sims will react more in adequation with their personality than ever, so the game will be very different in function of the Sims, which wasn't really the case before.
EDIT : I cant type [Embarrassed]

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

That's curious, I never dreamt about it. I really like my PC and I guess I'd rather put my money in it than in something I cannot really upgrade (like, I will change the video card but not the entire PC, I don't think you can do that with an Xbox or PS2...)

Two if you know the right store [Smile]

Maxis actually did research and discovered that there are four main types of players that enjoy The Sims:

1. The Powergamer. Loves achievement and efficiency. Plays to get the Sims to the top of their career ladders, and minimizes distraction and time-wasting activities along the way.

2. The Architect. Loves the creative aspects of the game. Plays with Sims mostly to earn money to expand and decorate their houses.

3. The Socialite. Forms a connection with the Sims themselves. Tells stories with them and enjoys watch their relationships unfold.

4. The Sadist. Loves to set things on fire, wall Sims into tiny cells, and remove ladders from swimming pools.

Some people exemplify only one of these models, while others represent a mix of two or three. So the idea going into The Sims 2 was to provide well for the needs of all four types.

Back when I was obsessed with the original Sims, my favorite thing to do was create a Sim-me, a Sim-Porter, and Sim-versions of other important people in my life.

Some funny stories in relation to that:

My first game, I made a Sim-me and a Sim-Porter. I assumed they would act like a married couple for some reason. I didn't realize that I needed to "vamp up" their relationship myself. When night fell, the one wouldn't get into the same bed as the other! I couldn't understand why! So they both got a terrible night's sleep. Then they kept getting grumpier and grumpier--and fighting. Finally, Sim-Porter was trying to cook and set the kitchen on fire. He began burning! Sim-me came out to see him screaming and crisping in the fire. Instead of freaking out, she tossed up her hands and walked away! Dude, she let him DIE!!! [Frown] [Frown] [Frown]

So anyway, I got a bit more experienced. I set up my little Sim-versions of us and people we knew, and they were doing great. Then Porter decides to make some characters (you have to play in the same universe) and try to break up my marriages! He's trying to woo away my beloved Sims! I was so ticked at him. He couldn't understand why....

Then I found the cheat to get lots of money and got some new skins. I bought the biggest mansion and filled it with Olympian Gods and Goddesses. [Smile] That was fun. But man, it was hard to keep that many people happy at once, even with all the comforts of life!

I never did make a version of myself. I mean, I live alone, so what's the point? Sims by themselves are fairly boring.

*groans* I see I'm a powergamer.

I never made a version of myself either.
But I do have quite a few gay, lesbian and married couple sims.
Once I put Dir en grey in my game. Me and a friend helped make the skins for them.
It was fun watching them dance to their own music.

Tired of sims setting themselves on fire, I always constantly put a fire alarm over the stove.

Mabus, here's what you do:

Create a Sim-you. Give yourself a sweet job, cool stuff, and then create a hot neighbor whom you woo and who falls head over heels for you. [Smile]

Hmm... The body shop isn't working for me it seems...

Posted by A Rat Named Dog (Member # 699) on :

Apparently, giving a Sim just one level in the cooking skill also makes a huge difference to preventing fires.

A few months ago, my sister-in-law Haley was coming to stay with us. So to celebrate the occasion, I made a Sim-family of me and Heather, and then created a single Sim named Haley. When the real Haley came over, I made my Sim-Heather invite Sim-Haley to stay at the Sim-Card house as a roommate [Smile] Haley found it rather amusing. I even recreated our apartment ...

Man, this is so sad.

Does anyone know the real release date ? On the site it's said that it will be the 17th, but maybe earlier for those who preordered it. I'm kind of confused about it.

Posted by Chris Bridges (Member # 1138) on :

Buy.com and BestBuy.com list it as the 14th, but the BestBuy in our town does not have it. Called EBGames nearby, they said tomorrow.

Posted by the master (Member # 6788) on :

Geoff, I have made sims of all of my sims playing friends. A while ago, a couple broke up and it was hell trying to get their sim counterparts to part ways. I ended up building two houses on the same lot so they didn't have to actually live together.

Posted by Turgan (Member # 6697) on :

huh?
Ok.. I'm confused....
You guys are saying Fable comes out in four days... someone else says it comes out in two days...
Maybe I came into this thread a day late or something...
I'm picking up my copy of Fable tomorrow...
SO CONFUUUUUUUSED!

And I'm with Chris... I could never get into guiding the lives of the Sims.... but with the Rosebud cheat code, I spent many many many hours building and designing houses.

Posted by A Rat Named Dog (Member # 699) on :

The official street date is the 17th of September, but it's actually shipping today. Generally, stores will put games on the shelves the moment they get them in, in the hopes of scooping their competition. So the EBGames in my area is planning to have it available between ten and eleven tomorrow morning, which is when the truck arrives.

You can get a game on the first day if you haven't preordered it, but only if (1) you get there early, or (2) it's not the type of game that sells out its first run. In the case of The Sims 2, I'd bet on number (1) [Smile]

Posted by A Rat Named Dog (Member # 699) on :

Oh, and I BELIEVE that Fable is coming out the same day. Now I'll have to torture myself over which to play first [Smile] Of course, I'll be going to work right after I pick them up, so maybe I'll just try them both out on the job, and then go home to start my REAL games ...

Posted by the master (Member # 6788) on :

Hopefully, Bill's already picked up our copy of Fable. He was on the way to the mall when I left.

I wonder if they'll release it for Mac. I could play it on my laptop. Oh that just seems like such a bad idea.

I would love to get control of the SIMS software for my research actually. But all my searching has turned no ideas up as to how to do that. Does anyone know if there are any opensouce type clones?

I can't believe none of you has been here to tell your new sims stories yet ! I did a little couple with family aspiration, they had a baby called Diane, but since they didn't have any skill point or anything and taking care of the baby takes a lot of time, they are kind of poor. I guess I should have waited to get them better jobs before I make them try for a baby, but anyway... The little girl is really cute.

I bought it yesterday for Cor. I got it at Toy's "R" Expensive, right at closing time, and they seemed to have plenty, so . . . [Dont Know]

It was like Christmas for Cor; she got up way before me, and had the game installed and running for who knows how many hours before I came down!

She's a bit OCD in how she plays. She has in the ballpark of three dozen characters she wants to create, so she's been doing nothing but creating characters all morning. She hasn't done anything else yet. Pretty impressive graphics, but the choices are pretty limited. I guess the next add-on will address that.

Now I have a new little MIDI song to hear repetitively until I hear it in my sleep . . .

Like Tom, I never found any attraction in this game at all. In fact, it rather creeps me out, to be honest. But it has been entertaining, over the years, to watch Cor play. I get to see all the neat "looky-here!" moments without wasting unholy amounts of time playing this game.

[Anyway, I really just wanted to brag that we had this . . . ]
