I was googling my username and came across this forum, which has a user named Noemon who definitely isn't me.

While the forum isn't as literate as ours it is interesting to read over, given the high number of people from around the world posting on it. Here is a thread where they discuss, among other things, how various members of that forum feel about US citizens referring to themselves as "Americans". Kind of interesting, given our recent discussion of the same topic.

That was really interesting (that one thread) Noemon -- although I did feel like most of the participants weren't maybe as saavy as Hatrackers [Wink] but that may have just been the feeling since most of them don't have English as their first language, so it comes across a little differently.

So are you going to say anything to that Noemon about you being Noemon?

I don't have a problem calling myself an American. It's the Canadians that bother me! If they are Canadians, then shouldn't they be from Canadia? Why are they not Canadans?

Yeah Farmgirl, it's hard to tell how much of the superficiality of their comments was due to English being a second language for many of the posters there, and how much was due to general ignorance of those posters. Some of the people there had interesting things to say though. I'll probably lurk around a bit more before I loose interest in the site.

As for introducing myself to their Noemon...naaah, I probably won't. I have thought about joining and providing a link to Hatrack, but I don't think I'll be doing that either.

Noemeon, do you suppose that over there, there's a mph who is Noemon's evil twin?

BTW, I gave up on growing the beard. While beverly loved it, it just isn't me any more.

But see, Kama -- you talk like it is your FIRST language -- really. You speak English so well that when I first came here I would never have guessed you lived in a different country...

That is definitely true. Of course, now I hear all your posts in my head with your accent. Even better!

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Kama, I've known quite a few people from quite a few different countries, and I've only known 7 or 8 that are as fluent in a second language as you are in English. I know that if I were trying to post on a Spanish or Thai forum, I'd come off--at best--sounding like a halfwit.

[Big Grin]

How easily do I hijack all threads...

[Razz]

Pfft. You call that a hijacking? I derail threads more thoroughly than that in my sleep!

[Razz]

Oh, by the way, I was thinking about those 7 or 8 people I mentioned above, and all but one of them perfected their English by living in an English speaking country, and using it day in and day out. There is only one person I've known who achieved your level of fluency while living in a non-English speaking country. Her English was, frankly, nothing short of amazing. She was German, but you'd never have known that from her speech; she didn't even have a German accent.

I don't have a German accent, either.

Shocking, that.

Hey! Don't bash people with english as a second language! We may come across as stupid but in truth we're just...well...plain weird [Wink]

(Well...everybody but Kama. But since she's a cyborg...)

The only trouble I have with U.S. citizens calling themselves Americans is that many (stereotyping now) are so darned proud of speaking English.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Your English is pretty damned good as well Eduardo. Have a look at that forum though; many there aren't quite so skilled.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Charming how some over there advocate genocide, isn't it?

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Kama's English is incredible. It all lends credance to the cyborg theory.

pooka, what do you mean? That Americans are proud of knowing English? I've never seen that. I mean, how much effort does it take for most Americans to learn English?

In many cases, more than they are willing to expend.

What should we call ourselves if not Americans? United Statesians just doesn't sound right.

Question for history buffs:

Weren't we "United States of America" or known as "Americans" by those over the ocean, before the names "Central America" and "South America" were given to those two areas? At what point were "The Americas" named, and in what order?

The naming of America (one theory)

Somehow I missed this until just now Porter. I expect that their Noemon must have a twin. They do have a user named "Mr. Potato". Maybe that's him?

I still say you should step up to the plate with photoshop and take the "evil" title away from me with a ridiculously large handle bar moustache.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

No, I've come to the realization that the only way I would ever be given the title of evil twin is out of pity. [Cry]

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I think this is a job for Annie. Maybe even a "photoshop friday" project. Make Porter look as evil as possible. Handlebar moustache, eyepatch, facial scars, strategically placed bandana--you name it, if it makes him look evil, use it.

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

I think Porter could help his own cause out quite a bit by not including crying smilies in his posts. It's really hard to picture Porter as evil when he's crying.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I know. I said I wanted to be the evil twin just out of reflex. I've been saying that I want to be somebody's evil twin for 15 years.

But by the time the opportunity comes along, I just don't have enough evil in me anymore.

How can I get my evil back?

Maybe I should give some candy to my kids, and then steal it!!

Nah, I'd just give it back.

Posted by Eduardo_Sauron (Member # 5827) on :

[Cry] = not evil
[Evil] = very evil
[Evil Laugh] = incredibly evil
celia = I was told this is the ultimate symbol of darknes, but I don't know why [Dont Know] . If I type it 5 times, will I summon something...evil?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

celia is so evil that .....

EVIL BUFFER OVERFLOW ERROR. POST TERMINATED.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I've heard that celia's evil is communicable. All she has to do is [Kiss] you, and :: poof! :: your evilosity will be restored.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Noooooo! Nope! None of that! Nothing to see here!

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

rubs chin thoughfully....

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

Of course, all that new found evil would be right out the window when your wife smacked you down for smooching with celia.
