The Dominican Republic just got trashed by newly-christened Hurricane Jeanne, and
quote:
The storm could potentially reach Florida, Georgia and South Carolina by the beginning of next week
[Eek!]

Incoming.

*sigh* I've been watching that one. It had the most potential to go up the coast at my family.

It's not often that I'm happy to live in a land-locked state, but this is one of those times.

But you still have seagulls.

Yes Michigan...forever.... yes Michigan is safe from Hurricans and killer bees...

[Smile]

And yet....you still have seagulls.

[Frown] Has anything like this ever happened on record?

My dad said that there are times like this now and then, like phases, and the NOAA is calling it another El Nino.

Don't worry...if it were an act of God, he'd have taken out Vegas first.

Heh, depends on which God you happen to be invoking.

A God that has something against old, retired people?

Lashing winds tore the roof from Margarita Rivera's house, flung her from a hammock and smashed her into the wall of a neighbor's house
[Frown]
That said, I wouldn't mind being killed suddenly as I'm laying in a backyard hammock.

And then there's the civil unrest:
quote:
In Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, airports were closed and businesses shuttered. Wednesday night, people mobbed a Ben and Jerry's ice cream parlor that was giving away ice cream that otherwise would spoil in the blacked-out Puerto Rican capital.

See Bev? I told you God was an evil, unsavory bastard. [Big Grin]

JOKING! I swear, I'm just joking.

Trevor, someday you'll have to learn that jokes are meant to be funny.

Posted by digging_holes (Member # 6237) on :

No.

It's just like when we had to esplain to Tom not to put j/k [Smile] at the end of all his jokes. [Wink]

Bev and I had a discussion about the possibility that God might not be the paragon of sweetness, goodness and light so commonly depicted.

That is the topic to which I was referring.

If you don't care for my attempt at humor, so be it. I'm sure I'll lose sleep over it.

Eventually.

That actually was funny..

See, this is the way it was meant to be. Constant fear, bankrupt insurers, wealthy grocers, vaction havens trashed. Does anyone even live in the Bahamas or Jamaica anymore? Frances just dort of hovered over the former and Ivan covered almost the entire entity of the latter in hurricane force winds. Now the Bahamas are going to get it again.

Posted by digging_holes (Member # 6237) on :

Trevor, I really wonder sometimes where you got your ideas about God.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Trevor, don't worry about it. I understand your vein of humor, and I did find it funny. Did I find it offensive? On some level, yeah, but I have this crazy ability to find something funny and offensive at the same time. I didn't find it all that offensive though. [Smile]

We could fill up an entire thread about my opinions on God, digging_holes.

Suffice it to say, I don't believe and with that disbelief, I am willing to concede that I might be wrong.

But in the interest of fairness, I might be right - or we might both be wrong.

Actually, Trevor, it's not your belief or disbelief in the existence of God that interests me, but your perception of what other people seem to believe about him. And those ideas seem a little off, at least to me... though of course, I can't speak for anyone but myself.

Wow! This became a God thread? I clicked on it to see if there were any updates on Hurricane Jeannie....

There are as many Gods as there are people to believe - the God the LDS observe may or may not be the same God the Catholics profess to worship and so on.

And if we delve into individual believers, the Jack Chik running gag leaps to mind. I don't think anyone on this forum believes in the God he preaches, but I cannot discount his notions as being any more right or wrong than the Catholics, Protestants, Baptists and so on.

There are some people who believe God is a great and wonderful thing - and some of those believers feel their God should be inflicted on others by sword and fire.

It's all a matter of perspective - who's holding the candle and who's on the business end of it.

-Trevor
