My midwife says she has info to help get me a scholarship, so I can take a Childbirth Educator course. I ahve wanted to do this for some time, but money has always been the issue. She actually wants me to go on to be a midwife, but I'm not ready to think about that. CBE, though, would be so exciting...I would love to be a real advocate, instead of just giving people advice...please wish me luck!

I also hope you go on to be a full midwife. I'm not sure how much difference there is between the two, but I think it is awesome that you are doing this.

A CBE gets to give classes where they inform parents of their birth options, talk about pain relief, brestfeeding, etc.

IN WA state, most midwives are "direct entry" midwives. They take a three year course- the first year and a half is the book stuff, the rest is apprenticing. Our midwives don't need any prior medical education and are eligle for third party reimbursement, including Medicaid. But I don't think I am strong enough to be a midwife. My hubby and midwife disagree.

I admire that you want to do that. At times I've thought of becoming a midwife, but I don't think I'm much of a people person.

romanylass, awesome.

I can totally see you as a CBE, even moreso as a midwife. Something to think about as you go along is how much you want to be able to coordinate things for people who use your services. Primary providers -- physicians, midwives, and others I can't think of right now -- assume responsibility for coordinating the care as opposed to providing a discrete part of it.

Some people want their job to just focus on doing one aspect of total care really really well, whereas other are more suited to assuming the responsibility for coordinating different aspects. It's a matter of personal style as much as anything else.

From my read of you, I'd expect you to do very well as a CBE but eventally want to assume further responsibility, despite being (initially) somewhat intimidated by it. Just keep an eye out for those impulses, though.
