Well she's being shy but in reality she's actually jumping up and down.

She made the All-State Indiana Orchestra with the Bass section!

You Rock!!

[Blushing] Thanks guys, I didn't think that more then a few people would say anything. It isn't that big of a deal. But it does make me want to dance around the room. [Smile] There needs to be a dancing smiley. [Party] close enough. I can be many people right?

All-State is this weekend! I go up tomorrow. I have a full day of seating auditions [Angst] and rehearsal. On Saturday there will be rehearsals all morning and the performance in the evening. I am really excited, but I am also nervous. If I get first chair *I* will start the concert off with a solo. *dies just thinking about it* I will update on Sunday to tell everyone how it went.

*applauds* Congrats!!! [Big Grin]

And good luck this weekend.

This is a HUGE deal Allegra, don't let anyone (including YOU) tell you different. You will have an amazing experience with an awesome conductor surrounded by some kick-a$$ musicians. What a great time!!! [Big Grin]

*hugs her music history buddy* Be safe, have a blast and give us a full report when you return. Oooh, and I want to know what was on the program, and everything!!!

We are playing Mahler's 1st 3&4 movements. It should be great, but the 4th mov't is incredibly fast. I don't know if my fingers can do that.

Good luck!

CONGRATZ!!

But, don't take Banna's suggestion.

If you Rock, the Orchestra may not give you first chair. I suggest something a bit more traditional.

Mahler? *dies* I adore Mahler. He makes me want to be an instrumentalist. Luckily, he also wrote some great vocal music.

But there really is nothing like one of his symphonies. *sigh* Have a great time. [Smile]

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

I will keep that in mind Dan_Raven. [Wink]

Being an instrumentalist does have its upsides. [Big Grin]

I am soo excited right now I am having a hard time sitting still.

I just got back. It was wonderful!!! Here is a detailed description for anyone that wants to read:
I drove up to Indianapolis by myself. I got to the general location ok, but I could not find where I needed to be. I drove around in circles not sure what to do or where to call. On the verge of tears, I looked at the itinerary and saw the Westin hotel as the rehearsal place. I saw the Westin the next time I circled and found a place to park. Around this time I was feeling upset and kind of lost. I find my way into the room with a little help from a friend’s mom.

Almost right away the Basses are whisked away for seating auditions. I was really nervous. One of the bass players was really behind me 7 months ago, but he had really improved. I had almost decided that I didn't have first chair. I went in for the audition. He called my playing beautiful [Blushing] . There were two sections I had to play one was the solo. The other was a fast section. The solo was good, but the fast sections were slow and not articulate enough. We went back and rehearsed until lunch. After lunch I found out I had first chair. I was so happy I could have burst out of my skin. I was trying to contain myself because there were bass players around that didn't seat so well, but it was hard.

After lunch we rehearsed for 3 more hours. We got a break for dinner and had sectionals. Then another 2 hour rehearsal. There was a reception for all of the All-State musicians after that. I got to see some people I knew from the All-State Choir and Band. There were chips and dip and drinks. My table ended up having a chip fight. Of course I did not participate. [Wink]

Today we woke up had rehearsal. Went to lunch. Had rehearsal again. Then I wandered around the mall for a few hours killing time. There was also a cheerleading convention. I have not seen so many 9 year old girls dressed like streetwalkers in my life. [Roll Eyes]

I went to the green room and got changed and ready to go. I was getting really nervous about my solo. It is really hard to get right in tune. I was talking to a French horn player and he said that he had noticed that it was never right in tune. He said it in the nicest way possible, but it was hard not to be insulted.

We took the stage and did sound check and a little bit of rehearsal. I played my solo horribly in front of the audience. It sucked. [Frown] . When we officially started the program it started with Mahler's 1st 3rd movement. So I started the whole show. It went much better this time. The whole performance went well. I was really focused for most of it, and I was watching him like a hawk. It went by really fast.

Afterwards I had to pose for a billion pics. I was ready to stop smiling. People kept saying how wonderful I was. It was really nice. 4 of my friends, my parents, and my orchestra teachers came. Afterwards the conductor and a few other people found me just to congratulate me. I felt really special. [Blushing] I went to dinner and now I am home.

Thoughts on the event as a whole: The conductor was really cool. I liked how he communicated what he wanted. He was never nasty or harsh. He was honest. It was my best experience with a conductor ever. Playing with an orchestra that was that good made me so much more excited about playing. I was excited about my part the whole time. It really helped me be sure that I would be happy in an orchestra.

The weekend summed up in a sentence: I love music and I love playing the bass. [Smile]

Thank you to everyone for your kind comments. It really means a lot to me.

Woooohooooo!!! First chair!!!! You rock! [Big Grin]

So, who was the conductor?

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

David Barg I think. I will check later. He is a flutist/ Youth orchestra conductor. I have worked with David Effron and I think this guy is better.

I was amazing. [Smile] I am still on floating on a cloud.

I also got an offer to be in All-State Band. They want one string bass player per band. I think I will send in a tape.
