OK, it's almost playoffs time, so time for the annual Hatrack playoffs thread... [Smile]

Hopes/predictions for this year?

I'm a Yankees fan (yeah, I know), so I know the AL best... I'm hoping for the A's to get the Wild Card, think they'd be fun in the Playoffs.

I don't think the Yankees will make it to the World Series this year (or, if they do, don't think they'll win) -- their pitching has been too inconsistent, which doesn't help in a short series... they usually do well in the playoffs, so they might get through the first round, but wouldn't be surprised if Boston or the A's beats them in the 2nd round. (Hope it's Yankees-Boston in the 2nd round though! I wish the Yankees and the Red Sox could play each other in all 162 games...)

Maybe Boston will make it to the World Series this year, they've got a really good team... I know enough Red Sox fans that I feel sorry for, and I'd love to see them go nuts if the Red Sox actually win the World Series [Smile]

NL... I don't know so well... I hope SF wins the West and the Cubs get the Wild Card, since they'd both be fun in the Playoffs... and then there'd be the chance of having a Cubs-Red Sox World Series...

What do y'all think?

Red sox baby [Smile]

Yankees face the twins, unless the twins end up with a better record then the A's, and the Red Sox get the A's. The A's are easy in a five game series, for the sox, cause their pitching is not what it was. The twins, on the other hand, are SCARY in a five game set... Santana Twice, and Radke Twice. And if there's a better pitcher in baseball right now then Santana, I'll shoot myself in the foot. He's pretty much unhittable.

Should be an interesting first round.

They needed to rest them, and they didn't have a lead. I didn't want to sweep the Sox anyway--we're probably going to face them again in the playoffs, and I don't want them humiliated right now.

I think the Yankees pitching has been significantly improved, and they're in great shape right now. I don't know which Yankees you're watching. [Dont Know]

EDIT to add: I think this is their best team in recent memory, and their best chance to win it all.

As much as I hate to say it, me being an A's fan, the AL West race is far from over. The A's play one more in Anaheim tomorrow, and four more to end the season. In between, they play Seattle, who's enjoying playing the role of spoiler these last couple weeks.

Anaheim plays four against the Rangers next week. And the Rangers aren't playing too badly, either.

If Mulder, Zito and Hudson don't turn it back on, the A's won't even get a shot at the playoffs. If they do, then whoever draws 'em had better be ready for a whoopin'.

The cardinals are very good... but they really do not have the pitching for a world series run. WS is normally decided by who has the better pitching, and unless the yankees make it through (which will not happen as the sox will crush them) The Twins, Sox, and A's all have better pitching then the Cardinals.

The Angels just won the West!!!!!!!!!

Vlad Guerrero is a monster. He should get the AL MVP this year (He does not have very stiff competition), but I'm worried they'll give it Ichiro because of the whole hit record thing.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

It won't be Ichiro. I'm not aware that anybody considers him to be in the running. I know a lot of people think it should be Guerrero, but to say he has no competition is not entirely accurate. Gary Sheffield has had a monster season, perhaps his most productive, and this despite a pretty bad shoulder. So has Manny Ramirez, although he plays for a sucky team. Do you live on the west coast? It sounds like you do, because you sound unaware of east coast teams. I know the same thing happens with east coast fans and west coast players.

Paul's Picks-
Twins beat the Yankees, cause Santana beats them twice and teh metrodome will be insane. Yankees don't have much pitching at the moment.

Red Sox and Angels battle it out in five. If Pedro shows up, the Sox win, if he doesn't, the Angels win.

Cards beat the snot out of the Dodgers.

Astros beat the Braves behind Oswalt and Clemens.

Red Sox and Twins, Red Sox as Santana can only pitch 2/7 games.

Cards beat the snot out of the Astros.

And Cards/Red Sox in a rematch from 1967, a match up featuring the two towns considered to be the best baseball towns in the country.

Icarus,

Sheffield hit .290 with 30 homers, those are NOT MVP numbers, even for die hard yankee fans. Manny is the one possible threat, he's got a few more homers (5 more than Vlad), a few more RBI's (4 more than Vlad), a much lower Batting Average (Vlad hit .337 and Manny hit .308), a comperable OBP, and a higher slugging percent (about 15 points). I think Manny's marginal lead in most of the categories will be overshadowed by Vladd's much higher batting average in the MVP voting (at least I hope). I've heard a lot of Ichiro buzz, I don't think he deserves the MVP, but I think he is a threat.

um...

Manny has 43 homeruns and 130 RBI and a .308 average.

Posted by sarfa (Member # 579) on :

those numbers are in respect to Vladd's, manny has 5 more homers than Vlad and 4 more RBI's. Sorry if that was confusing, he wouldn't be much of an MVP candidate if he only had 5 hrs and 4 RBI's.

I'm not going to argue stats with you. I think Sheff has been most valuable to his team, but whatever. Most of the writers I read seem to think it will almost certainly go to Sheff or Ramirez. um, I didn't say anything about the game. I will hate cheesy sound effects in a baseball game telecast no matter who wins.

Posted by newfoundlogic (Member # 3907) on :

They did that with the NHL all star game too. The puck was highlighted in blued and whenever it was hit at a certain speed it turned into a flaming red. The blue highlight was actually somewhat helpful when you're trying to follow a tiny little puck on a TV screen.

For some reason I find myself really hoping the Twins win it all and it has nothing to do with animosity toward the Yankees. I really don't want the Astros, Dodgers, Braves, or Angles to win. I wouldn't mine seeing a battle between the two greatest offenses in baseball, the Red Sox and the Cardinals. It would be like a football game in Fenway.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Icarus, dear, you did not need to say anything about the game. I believe that you transferred your annoyance and fear over the impending Yankees play-offs boot-ation onto the sound system. Own your feelings of doom, Icarus. own them.

Elizabeth, the thing is that it's usually a Yankees tradition to lose the first game of a postseason series... and then go on to win the series. So, we're not worried.

Um, the Yankees had more home runs than either team this year. They also scored more points, were on base more often, and had more RBIs than the Cards, and they stole more bases than Boston.

Oh, and they had fewer strikeouts than either the Cards or the Red Sux.

How pathetic, Icarus, to have to compare your team to a science fiction writer and his family. I mean, even I probably had more RBIs than the Cards.

Posted by Paul Goldner (Member # 1910) on :

Icarus-
Fact checking is a good thing.

The red sox scored 50 more runs then the yankees this year.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/aggregate?statType=batting&group=9

The red sox had a higher batting average, higher OBP, higher SLG, more runs, and while the yankees hit 20 more home runs then the sox, the sox hit 100 more doubles then the yankees.

Edit: Oops, and reading closely is also a good thing. You said the yankees scored more runs then the cards, which is true... but still, the best offense by far in the AL was the Red Sox. Not even CLOSE>

Random question for Paul or other stat heads: does a player's performance in the postseason count towards his official lifetime records? (Does a pitcher's win count towards his lifetime total # of wins, does a hitter's home run count towards his lifetime total of home runs, etc.)

Posted by plaid (Member # 2393) on :

Congrats to the Red Sox fans!!

Plaid-
No. What happens in the post season doesn't effect anything for seasonal records. Including awards. ALl the voting for MVP, Cy young, manager of the year, etc. is already done.

Post season stats are kept seperately, but are no longer meaningful when compared to other eras because of the number of rounds played. World Series records are also still kept, and are meaningful.

Posted by plaid (Member # 2393) on :

Paul -- thanks, but I was wondering about if postseason games count towards a player's lifetime record. Phrasing it better: Babe Ruth hit 714 home runs -- does that 714 include all the home runs he hit in World Series, or did they not count towards the total?

Posted by Paul Goldner (Member # 1910) on :

Sorry. I guess I wasn't clear.

No. Babe ruth's 714 home runs were all during the regular season.

Posted by plaid (Member # 2393) on :

Thanks Paul.

Hmm. On the one hand I can see how keeping the postseason games out of the lifetime totals is fairer to players who get stuck on bad teams that don't get to the postseason much.

On the other hand, seems like a nice bonus to reward the players on the teams that do make it to the postseason.

Posted by Paul Goldner (Member # 1910) on :

Baseball is a stat game in many ways. Because of that, keeping the post-season seperate is essential.

Curiosity question for Red Sox fans: if you had to choose between:

1) Winning against the Twins for the AL Championship, but then losing the World Series in the 7th game

or

2) Winning against the Yankees for the AL Championship, but then losing 4-0 in the World Series

Which would you pick?

(I know, you want to win it ALL, but, still, if you couldn't, and you had to pick...)

(Disclaimer: am not Mephistopheles, your choice will not influence reality...)

To be perfectly honest, Plaid, I do not think the psyche of the New England Red Sox fans could take it if the Sox won the Series. I remember discussing this last year.

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

plaid, given that you say we will lose the World Series either way, I have to go with the ALCS win over the Yankees.

If you change it so that if we play the Twins, and win the World Series, I'd pick that option.

The sentiment in the greater "Red Sox Nation" is more split on that point though, I think. A world series, won in almost any way, would be the sweetest thing in sport for this area... We're talking 5x or 10x the Patriots Super Bowl victory rallies (that had about a million people at them). We might even have another funky state holiday that the rest of you don't have, like Patriots' (of the Revolution, not football [Smile] ) Day or Evacuation Day.

Do they do anything to recycle all the wood from the broken bats?

-o-

Oh, and:

I hear they take up the bat splinters and go vampire hunting.

What Mack gestured.

So we beat Schilling and Martinez.

What else 'ya got?

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

More like, what else YOU got?

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Yeah, right. Like these weren't the games you were supposed to win.

Remember? We don't have an ace at all. Mussina is average and Lieber sucks. Versus this year's Red Sux ace and last year's ace.

Pedro didn't pitch badly. He had no run support. Schilling did pitch badly, but he was off. Something is very wrong with his ankle. [Frown]

You're right, Pedro did not pitch badly.

You should've heard me last night.

Announcer. "That was Pedro's 100th pitch of the night."

Me. "TAKE HIM OUT! TAKE HIM OUT!"

Then he gives up the walk and the homerun.

Dammit. They need to listen to me.

*nod*

Especially when they compared his numbers pre- and post- 100.

Then again, I don't know that I would have taken out Lieber after a leadoff single in the eighth when he was pitching a 3-0 shutout. I think I would have waited at least until someone was in scoring position. But maybe Torre was running scared after how close you guys made it the night before last.

You'd think they would've learned from the last time...

edit: to mack

I think Torre was scared. How quickly Mussina got broken down by the Sox had to affect his decision to take out Leiber when they got the first sign of a rally.

Just read that Schilling probably won't be able to pitch the 5th game [Frown]

That's always hard when you lose a pitcher in the postseason... I think part of the reason the Yankees lost last year's World Series was that David Wells's back went out on him in game 5...

(But if the Red Sox can still win without Schilling, that'll be WAY impressive)

Nah, it's hopeless. They should hang it up now.

Posted by Dan_raven (Member # 3383) on :

Doesn't matter. The Cardinals will sweep up whoever is left.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Please. They could barely handle lowly Houston. At home.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Boston will never hang it up. I figured out, they're the Goonies of baseball. And Goonies never say die.

*yawn*

Looks like Yankees will win it again this year.

*another yawn*

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Again? They didn't win it last year or the year before, or the year before that.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Hey, whaddya know? Houston has snuck back into their series!

::claps::

Whoooeeee, stros win it.

By the way, that one pitcher for the cards is so ugly I felt bad for him.

Oohh...It will be craziness if the yanks have to face Clemens.

Does anybody else watching the playoffs despise "Scooter" as much as I do?
