Middle Earth Mud (MEM) is now open for players!!

For those of you who don't know what a MUD is: MUD stands for Multi-user Dungeon. Its an online computer game. They are RPGs(Roleplaying Games). They are multiplayer, usually massively, meaning lots and lots of people can play it at once. And it generally refers to text-based games, meaning no graphics(the term Graphical MUD refers to graphics muds, or MMORPG is also used). You type and command and it sends back what happens as text. Muds can be played through standard telnet programs or through special MUD clients. They are rather addicting, and lots and lots of fun.

I started working on Middle Earth Mud about a year and a half ago when I stumbled across the CircleMUD 3.1 base code for it. I had been playing MUDs for about two years, in particular one called MUME(http://mume.org) which was based on Tolkiens Middle Earth. While MUME was a great MUD, I didn't think it was really all it could but. Muds have the capacity to be amazingly detailed and realistic if people put the effort in. Which is what I wanted, and the MUME management seemed to be working more towards PK(player killing, player vs player battles) than to accuracy to Tolkien and realism and detail.

So when I found the CircleMUD code, avalible for public use with a standard MUD license(basically, just that you give the coders of CircleMUD credit for what they did to start you off and don't charge your players money), I grabbed it and set to work. I got the basecode online over my DSL line on a 5 year old iMac rev D with 512 MB of RAM and upgraded to system 10.2 last August. Various MUDers around the world have been helping me build the mobs(computer control characters and monsters), objects (items and equipment), and rooms(the area's where you play) since then. We only have about 700 rooms open for players right now(not many), but I finally finished enough of the coding changes that I feel I can open it to players. SO! As of a few nights ago it is now open!

So, if you like to play MUDs or are a fan of Tolkien, come and give it a try! The website can be found here: http://mem.zapto.org and you can play it by connecting to mem.zapto.org port: 4000 in telnet. A year and a halfs work and I finally get to enjoy and share the fruits of my labor!! *BOUNCE*

Edit: Oh and I'm known as Manwe there, so when you pop in, say hi! [Smile]

Congratulations!

I used to MUD a few years back, waaaay back in middle school, but I haven't done any MUDing for several years. I might have to poke my head in and check it out.

Heh. I met the CircleMUD coder a few times (he was a TA for me too, I think) back in college. Neat guy.

I personally have been participating in an open alpha of an HPLovecraft MUSH (Like a MUD, but no real combat; sorta like improv theater), and have been enjoying it quite a bit. It costs a monthly payment to play, however...

Good luck with the new MUD! Make sure you list it on www.mudconnector.com

Already have both a www.mudconnect.com listing and a www.mudmagic.com listing. Have since it went online pretty much. But I updated them since we opened. And thanks everybody!
