Apparently we've been aware of these things for 25 years, but this is the first I've heard of them. Apparently they can't compete with other, faster dividing bacteria (these square things only replicate every 1 to 2 days, whereas E. Coli manages it every 20 minutes or so) in conditions where there are lots of nutrients, or not a lot of salt, but in low food, high salinity conditions everything else pretty much dies off, and these things are left to thrive. They also tolerate magnesium chloride really well.

Danged Huey Lewis song in my head now. Thanks. [Grumble]

That is really amazing.

Wow, that's really cool! I wonder when we're going to find triangle ones. [Big Grin]

I assume that triangular bacteria would be incredibly virulent; as everyone knows, triangle man hates person man, and if they have a fight, triangle wins.

Nah, they're actually kind of postage stamp shaped.

I want to see trapezoid shaped bacteria.

Triangle man is such a hater.

Tell me about it! No redeming qualities, that I can think of.

Shouldn't this be called something like Spongeous squarepantsus?

Wow, so there are nerd bacteria too and, just like human nerds, they have problems scoring. I'm sure if all the girl bacteria understood how special all these square bacteria are, they'd like them a lot more.

I think the square bacteria are being nice just to get some action.

But, don't bacteria only make it with themselves? [Blushing]

You must be pretty bad if you can't even get asex.

Sometimes I find myself particularly unappealing. Then I turn down the lights, pour myself a glass of wine, and slip into something a little more uncomfortable.

[Wink]

I, on the other hand, require cash to turn myself on. Jewelry is an acceptable alternative.

Talk about not being able to get in touch with your feminine side.

I touched my feminine side once. Then I slapped myself for it.

Not only does this thread prove there are nerd bacteria, it proves there are bacteria nerds.

Ooh, I want a t-shirt that says "Bacteria Nerd and Proud Of It" and has a picture of square bacteria!
