I need to install I.E. 5.5 on my XP system. I already have I.E. 6, but I need both simultaneously for testing purposes.

Is this even possible? If so, how can I install 5.5 in a way that it won't affect 6?

The reason I'm doing this is that I'm having some weird css issues on a site that I'm working on where everything seems perfect in I.E. 6, Mozilla and Safari, but according to those that have the browser there's one div that seems to have a 1 pixel horizontal shift in 5.5. I can't seem to track it down.

I don't know if you can run two different versions on the same computer simultaneously, but I would bet against it; here's a link that should be of some help, at least:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx

Here is a long possibility. You could partition your hardrive into 2 partitions. Install Your operating system on both drives. Then you could find a program that lets you run two OS simultaneously.

*laughs maniacaly*

It's not possible to have both in the same install of windows.

And don't you dare get me started on the css 1-pixel shift... You will NEVER track it down. Promise.

*grumbles* bloody windows.

It's such an odd problem. I've found some resources today that I think will help me track it down.... I've been using the Holly Hack to fix other positioning problems and everything else seems to be consistent within IE 5.5 and 6, except for this. *shrugs*

Well, after much frustration and searching, I've found solutions for both my issues..

Insert Title has a tutorial on how to download and extract earlier versions of IE. They show you which files to cull to make a standalone version of IE that you can run seperately. You can't let it access "favourites" or it'll crash - it's still using some System info, and in fact the "about IE" will say that it's v6 or whatever else you're using.... but as of last night I was running v5.5 SP2 and v6 of IE on the one machine without partitions.

I'm sure that'll be useful to a few of us!

As to the css problems I seem to have successfully solved my 1-pixel shift issue using Tantek's box model hack. I now have css code running on my website that produces different fixes in (IE 5.5) (IE6) (Mozilla + Safari). Not tested in Opera or IE Mac.

Another helpful site during the process of moving to an entirely css presentation code was evolt.org - they've got some very helpful articles.
