At my orchestra holiday concert sophomore year we had to do some christmasy theme, so our section did egg nog. We threw eggs at one of the boy's heads. they hit the gagillion dollar auditorium carpet, I think I'm still in trouble for that one.

You know what's funny? Last April I was in our local grocery store, picking up some cottage cheese -- and there, right next to the whipped cream and sour cream and other things with cream in the name, was a small selection of egg nog.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'm glad to see that egg nog is apparently still produced at all times of the year, and I of course bought some immediately. But I have often wondered, since then: why April? Is it an Easter/Christmas connection? Did some factory find a huge closet full of leftover egg nog somewhere and rush it to market? Or do we ship our excess egg nog during the non-holiday season to other countries, and somehow Oregon, Wisconsin wound up the lucky recipient of one of these CARE packages?

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

It could be Easter, Tom, due to the eggs in it.

Posted by Ben (Member # 6117) on :

dude! if my grocery store were that cool i'd buy it hourly.

You know what's good? Egg nog shakes. Egg nog, vanilla ice cream, chocolate covered cherries and just a hint of rum (optional, its still the bomb either way). Blend it. Drink it. Thank me later.

Thank you, Ben.

The appearance of egg nog in the stores coincides with the end of the apple season - definitely helps me over the slump. [Smile]

Eggnog in November? Blasphemy! That's like . . . that's like eating pumpkin pie in the spring! It's just wrong.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

This year, when eggnog is like $0.20 a gallon, I'm going to buy a dozen gallons and freeze it.

Eggnog in July! I've got shivers already. [Smile]

I also never tried it. Something about it just sounds disgusting, to me...

I hate eggs.
i won't drink it. [Grumble]

The eggnog you get in the store is a bit too rich for my taste - I add a little milk. I loved the eggnog my mom made - but that included raw eggs and I don't risk that any more. It tasted great, though.

Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :

the stuff you buy in the store is pasteurized - therefore safe.

Ah...but did you get violently ill after you drank it. Maybe they don't make it year round...you just got last years leftovers. [Razz]

It's pretty easy to make homemade egg-safe eggnog too. Take the eggs and a cup or so of the milk (or cream, if you're going the clog-your-arteries route) and zap in the blender with a some (say 1/2 c.) of the sugar. Do NOT include the vanilla at this point.

Microwave at high for a minute or two (try one minute, then if it's not hot enough, another minute), until it is heated through, but not boiled or curdled. Return to blender; add remaining milk, sugar, and vanilla. Also add any alcohol and spices.

Nummy!

Syn -- I don't like eggs either, but I LOVE eggnog. It doesn't taste eggy. Try some!

What on earth is egg nog?

(edit: I did look it up, but I'm still not sure if it's something I ever had or not)

Rich and very sweet beverage, may or may not be alcoholic (if so, most commonly spiked with rum). Often flavored with cinnamon and/or nutmeg. Milk/cream blended with eggs and sugar, essentially.

Really yummy. [Big Grin]

*irritated* Ok, so why is it that everyone else has it in stores near them but me?

Now I'm going to have to check out more stores tonight. *shakes fist* Darn you, Hatrack!

I don't like egg nog either, but my husband loves it. He likes to add sprite or 7-up to it to thin it out a little.

I like to mix it 1/3 egg nog, 2/3 milk.

1) Closest Walmart is 45+ minutes away.

2) I refuse to support Walmart's business practices.

Thanks for the suggestion, though! [Smile]

Are you in the Chicago area or has Oberweis expanded? Their egg nog is YUMMY!!!! I haven't had the ice cream (any flavor) yet, I don't buy it often as I typically don't have the room in my freezer.

I love eggnog, too, but the store bought stuff is too sweet for me, so I make my own. These days I use one of the commercial egg white products (I like All Whites) instead of raw eggs. It comes out nummy. [Big Grin]

I love egg nog. Store-bought, homemade, dairy-bought, however I can get it, it's great. With milk, with rum, plain, it's all fantastic.

Yummy!

I forgot to look at the grocery store tonight. Maybe next week...

I love the flavor, but the idea of the raw eggs turns me off but good.

Please tell me the store-bought stuff isn't filled with raw eggs, only the homemade stuff.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Ralphie, the store-bought stuff is pasteurized. And if one uses the microwave method I outlined above (or something similar), you need not fear raw eggs in the homemade stuff either.

Hopefully, the Albertsons I'm planning on heading to tomorrow will have the kosher stuff. If not, I'll try Vons.

Sooooo I was at the grocery store today, and they had quite the selection of egg nog, but then there was a carton beside it that just said "custard." Naturally, I had to try it.

I3 came over for dinner, and we tried it... it kinda tastes like a vanilla malt, but no ice cream... very smooth, really yummy. I started to read the ingrediants but he told me to stop, nothing good ever comes of that.

We're having it as an after-dinner drink with a shot of amaretto... if you see it, I highly recommend it!

I made coquito for a party I went to last night. It's basically eggnog with cream of coconut and it's oh so very good. So good, in fact, that there were no left overs after the party. I'll definitely have to make some more soon.

Wow - I didn't realize it had been two years since this thread began. I still haven't tried rivka's pasteurization method, and I should.

However, I wanted to mention there is something called milk nog that is still sweet and all, but not sickly sweet and thick like store-bought egg nog (which needs to be diluted with milk). The milk nog I've had is from Anderson-Erickson, which is based in Iowa. There may be other dairies that sell it too.

Posted by Valentine014 (Member # 5981) on :

You dilute it with milk?!

You should be ashamed. The only thing egg nog should ever be diluted with is rum.

Is the McArthur Dairy brand of eggnog good? I've neevr tried eggnog and I think that's the only brand they have near me.

You must not dilute eggnog with anything. It's supposed to be thick. The thicker the better.

Altadena is the best eggnog. Mmmmm.

Sometimes it is a little heavy. But good news! They make "Light", which is thinner.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

No, Jaime.

This year's best eggnog that I have found in Florida is, believe it or not, Publix Lowfat Eggnog.

(As I mentioned previously, eggnog quality varies greatly, even within the same brand, from year to year. This year's Publix one is not too terribly thick, and it is very rich and flavorful.)

I'm LDS - no rum for me. Most store-bought egg nog is too thick and sweet. Remember, I grew up with my mom's egg nog recipe, which was sweet but much lighter than what's available commercially. But milk nog is a lot closer to mom's.

Edited to correct misspelled word.

Same here. I like the idea of mph's proportions on the previous page--1 part egg nog, 2 parts milk--and I'll add that if it's skim milk, I just might like it that way.

I liked it the thick and sweet way when I was a kid. Then some showed up at a work Christmas party one year (I hadn't had egg nog for years, hardly remembered what it tasted like). When my friend asked, "have you tried the eggnog?" I asked her if it was spiked. No, she told me. So I had a big swallow. "Umm, Martha, this is totally spiked." "Oh, it is? Sorry--I guess I never had it any other way. I just thought this was what eggnog tastes like!"

She wasn't kidding either-- a good friend, not the kind that thinks it's funny to trick the naive little Mormon into drinking alcohol.

I posted a few minutes ago, but it didn't take, so this may be late. But: They have eggnog year round in Mexico. The street venders that sell flan in the mornings, have old whiskey bottles full that they will pour over the flan on request. The Mexican name, "ronpope" give you an idea about the ingreadients.

For US commercial eggnog, I line up with the diluters. For a breakfast drink, you might try diluting it with Diet Coke. Don't knock it until you've tried it.

It's not super-thick when you make it yourself. Only big dairies with their kelp-based thickening agents can accomplish that.

I consider the taste (and texture) of eggnog I make myself to be the basis for comparison, and then judge store brands by how close they come to that.

It was so many years ago, I don't remember. Maybe I had a stuffy nose? But you know, now that I think of it I don't think I had a very big gulp of it after all. I think I was pretty suspicious that she was wrong and just took a little sip. My dept. just wasn't the type to serve nonalcoholic eggnog at a party.

I can't handle a lot of egg nog at once. It's too thick for me.

Posted by Icarus (Member # 3162) on :

Try multiple brands before you give up, because they're not all equally thick. Also, consider diluting it. Maybe try someone's homemade eggnog.

Or not. [Smile]

Posted by kojabu (Member # 8042) on :

I still drink a little bit of it when it's around, but it's more in the tablespoon amount, instead of a full cup. The last time I had it was the last day of class where we had a small party and everyone brought in food/drinks. There was no option of dilution then.

Posted by Jon the Dirk (Member # 9981) on :

I like it with pepricka on top.
I only dilute it with milk on certain days when I want something light, but when I'm in an uber Christmas Spirit mode I drink it straight.
I would by it more often, but it's just so darn expensive.
I have'nt even bought any this year. I had some at a friends house though, and it was really good until it got warm.

Warm eggnog makes me want to puke, hurl and barf all at the same time.
