I need to raise my post-number, so I'd like as many of you to say, what's your REAL opinion about Orson Scott Card? Consequently, why are you in Hatrack?

How does other people giving their opinion of Orson Scott Card raise YOUR post count?

Posted by Stan the man (Member # 6249) on :

I try to never hold a real opinion on somebody I don't personally know, or haven't met. I would guess to say that he is a nice much loud speaking person, and I like his books.

Why are ya trying to raise your post count?

And

I joined because... [Dont Know]

Posted by Jonathan Howard (Member # 6934) on :

Your question proves that fact, A Rat Named Dog (I heard you are a Card yourself). Since you ask a question, you expect an answer, thus raising my post count. It's a shame here not to have over 500! But then, I'm new.

Many people here criticise OSC most brutally, and yet they are on his forum, how come?

After you get to 1000 posts, you get a small gift. At 2000, you start getting checks for every 500 posts made.

I'm a 14 y.o., that bans me from all privileges, no? After all, I keep my contact information confidential, aside from e-mails (I try to, usually).

Wait are saying that having a low post count isn't a good thing? Some of us are quite pleased by the low post count we have.

Yeah, in your case, Jonathan, they give the money to the national zoo. OSC likes, nay, loves, pandas.

He pays the members so they'll stay and create an atmosphere that draws newbies.

Post-whoring doesn't work, though. The first gift comes at 1000 posts, but you have to have been here for six months too.

I am so excited about my first gift! I know it's just a token, but still, it really means something to me. :waitspatiently:

Shhh..don’t tell him about the initiations that come after the first 1,000 posts. If you’re going to tell him about the fringe benefits of being a member, fine, just leave it at that please.

[No No]

It hasn't come yet? I think A Rat Named Dog is in charge of sending those out, and he does it once a quarter.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

What I'm wondering is where OSC got those pictures that he sent me as my gift. Also, should I be flattered that he's that interested in me, or feel threatened by it?

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

Actually, the early gifts are much shoddier now than before. Bob and Tom and kat keep requiring ever better gifts due to their high post counts, so the Cards skimp on the low end.

Be glad you aren't me though, ElJay, I joined the forum before the rewards program was instituted... [Frown] I'm hoping I'll get my first gift (for my 4000th post) some day soon too!

It's only been a couple of days... I wouldn't expect it yet.

And JH, why would you think your contact info being hiden would matter? You had to provide it when you registered, the board administrators can still see it. But you are too young...

Edit: Cool, Bok! Hope your 4000 gift is nice... and [Mad] KatBobTom for being greedy.

I am waiting for the new car. Wasn't that billed for the 25,000 mark?

Bet OSC had no idea that someone would actually get over 10,000 when he made that deal. Back in the day, people would only post a few times a week.

I hear it's a Yugo with about 100,000 miles on it Sara. He's just giving it away because it's cheaper than paying to have it hauled off. "New", in this case, just means "new to you".

Belle, that just goes to show you how cheap OSC is. Making two gifts in one transaction. Sheesh.

Then again, should we really be surprised by this? After all, OSC is so cheap he didn't bother to set up separate boards for Books, Films, Food, and American Culture; he just smooshed them all together.

I love having the boards together. Nobody'd ever make it to even 5,000 on the Food board alone, since we only talk about food when everyone has retreated, bleeding, to their respective partisan corners.

Ratfinks. There's always a catch at this place.

The "lawyers" aren't really lawyers, they just play them on tv. Don't even get me started on the "writers" and the "mothers" and the "pharmacists."

There is a lot of creative interpretation of the language around here.

I'm here because after 7 years of serving him, OSC will set my beloved, whom through his mastery of dark magics he has changed into a jeweled bird and set at the top of the highest mountain, free.

However, after my first thousand posts, I was visited by a wrinkled old man, who for the crust of bread and dipperful of water that makes up my supper, traded me an enchanted slide whistle. After two thousand, he came again and for my meal traded me an especially stinky head of cabbage. I can only hope at three thousand that I can gain the blessed tire swing of St. Tilly of Antioch and thus have the last piece I need to bring OSC's tyranical reign to an end.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

What's especially disturbing is that I've been missing my slide whistle, one of my cabbages, and my tire swing for almost two years now, but keep getting dry bread and half-filled cups of water delivered anonymously to my door. It's like a swap meet run by ancient mystical masters.

I really do beg to differ. I've been known to bring up food 4 separate times in the same 5-minute conversation. Just ask Hobbes.

"How was your day, Annie?"
"Great. I had Chinese food for lunch"
"That's nice. How's school?"
"It's ok, I suppose. The campus cafeteria is going to be the death of me though."
"So what are you doing tonight?"
"I think I'll cook something with the weird things I bought in the Mexican aisle. They're really quite fascinating."
"Well, I hope you're feeling well."
"A bit hungry, but who wouldn't be after that magnificent sandwich I had in Seattle last week? Nothing else is even close to measuring up, I'm afraid, and I've been spoiled for life to regret the sandwich-that-shall-never-be-relived."

*can identify with the missing-a-specific-sandwich-because-it's-on-the-other-coast feeling* I got addicted to DiBella's while working in Buffalo. Annie, where's that sandwich shop? You may have saved my life. I was sure I'd never find a sandwich as good as DiBella's.

Well, I guess I got grandfathered past the initiation thing... that's good. Right? Wait, what if it was something kinky? Oh bother. Now I won't be able to focus in Latin discussion.

Can't we get a gift for five years of being here, too? I mean, some of us do revel in fairly low post counts but have been here for almost... forever. (Actually, I'm feeling a definite lack of presents. Speaking of which, has anyone brought up the Gift Exchange yet? Or are we going to wait until after Thanksgiving? Anyone all organized-like still reading this? [Wink] )

Mmmm... Sandwiches...

I heard that if you kiss butt enough, OSC sends you a really good sandwich.

Posted by jeniwren (Member # 2002) on :

Zal, DiBella's has these fab sub sandwiches. I *love* Quiznos, but they can't touch DiBella's. My favorite is turkey on Everything bread. The Everything bread has herbs and spices baked into the top of the bread that adds so much flavor! Then they put an herbed oil on the sandwich that is heavenly. They don't skimp on the meat, but if you're serious about wanting to even out the carbs from the bread with a heavy dose of protein, they will double their already generous portion for a little bit more money. All the ingredients are incredibly fresh. One time I was in there, they had just gotten a shipment of roast beef that was so juicy and tasty looking I was tempted. And I don't like roast beef.

They also have cookies as good as what I can make at home. (This is praise...I am very fond of my own cookies.) If you're ever in Buffalo, NY, you have to try them. They're on Niagara Falls Blvd across from the Mall.

Bok just said "smooshed." What a great word.

I've met OSC a few times and he seems to be a great guy. I've read most of his books at least once. I read his columns regularly, and even when I don't agree with his opinions, at least admire the fact that they are usually well though out. His wife is everything nice that everyone has ever said about her and then some. I joined Hatrack b/c its the most interesting online community I've met yet. My cool OSC story:

At a signing I recommended "Ender's Game" to a woman who was looking around for books for her 12-year-old grandson who had never read any OSC before. She bought it and got in line behind me. When we got to the front of the line the lady mentioned that I had recommended the book to her, and OSC got out his change purse and gave us each 35 cents, which totalled up to the royalty he earned on her purchase! That left a smile on my face.

As host here, he's been both incredibly generous and incredibly tolerant.

On the personal level, I live in the same town he does, but have never had the luck to meet him. A fellow could probably look him up and show up on his doorstep one day, but that's a bit too fanboy and creepy for my tastes.

Locally, though, if you bring his name up, folks are pretty proud of him making his home here.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

What I think of him? I think that he is a much more talented author than I will probably ever be, and from all accounts is a kind person. His wife, from what little I've seen of her, seems like a genuinely good person, and I like his son quite a bit (not that I know him in real life or anything--it's just from the forums that I know Geoff); both of these things support what I've heard of his being a good person. I dislike his political essays, more for the tone than for the content, although I can't say that I agree with the content very often either.

If you reverse his initials, it's CSO, which almost like CSI, which is a show.

I saw a sign that said "OCS" the other day, next to the railway for the O-Train (which is Ottawa's expensive and not-very-useful city train). I don't know what OCS means, but I thought it would be funny to go switch the letters in the middle of the night. Then I thought how hard it would be to actually get there in the middle of the night, and that temperatures are below freezing in the middle of the night at this time of year, and that it would be alot of work to actually modify the sign so it would look good, and that i had no idea how to do it, and that I really didn't care that much, so I gave up on the idea almost as soon as I had thought of it.

Still, it would have been cool.

Well, I admire him a lot as a writer and as a person. I've never met him, but from all accounts, he seems to be a good and honorable man. I don't agree with everything he's said, but nevertheless, reading his writings have made me want to be a better person.

Of course, I'd like him a lot more if he came to Alaska. C'mon, Goodman and Goody Card. Forty-nine states! You're so close! Just one more to go! What are you waiting for? Just one little book signing, that's all we ask. And I can promise you a wonderful meal, if you forget about all those restaurants and go to my parents' house. In my family, we dip our bread in olive oil. . . .

I think OSC's good people.

I have an admiration for his ability to teach as well as his writing skill. The few times that I've observed him, or listened to him, or spoken with him, I've always felt I had his attention and interest. It's a real gift, that-- to be able to take interest in the people you meet.

No matter where he is or what situation he's in, I feel that OSC is a good host. He was certainly generous with our Boot Camp class; ditto with the time he spends in signing books. (A bit too generous-- we were there 4 hours, and had to leave before we got to meet the guy. Alas.)
