Does anyone here know or have a hypothesis as to why someone like me is losing weigh so rapidly? I eat well although I usually skip breakfast, and I walk around one mile per day... I don't think its very normal. I know I should go to the doctor if I'm not feeling right (My joints and bones are giving me trouble too) but I've got no medical insurance, never had any, and doctors cost an eye and a half...
edit: I just noticed this is my 400 post!!
BTW, I'll continue talking about his tomorrow, gots to go for now...

At the risk of sounding like a net.stalker,

1. How old are you?
2. Eating well means what?
3. How often do you eat?
4. How active is your lifestyle?
5. Define "losing weight rapidly."

Some causes of involuntary weight loss.

You do need to go in. There are city clinics that may be able to help you, or you may qualify for medicaid. You need to be tested for diabetes and hyperthyroidism, among other things. I know it's not fun to have to deal with these things without insurance, but it's important. *had a pregnancy that wasn't covered by insurance* *as a result, has no insurance herself*

First of all, I'm 17.
Although I do not eat my five a day and stuff, I do eat lots of meat, a fair amout of vegetables and at least four glasses of water per day.
I don't really have an active lifestyle, but I do walk at least 2 miles per day. What I mean by losing weigh rapidly is that, according to my belt, I've gone three holes down in at least one month. And according to my fingers, which people have always considered fat, now miraculously can wear any ring I have. The only finger that could wear a ring was the left ring finger, all the others would need help getting them off. Help would be lard, margarine, water, soap, etc. Could anyone please tell me I'm paranoid like my mom says I am and that I do not have a serious eating disorder?

Eating disorders should be fairly self-evident in the behaviors manifested: starving yourself, binging and purging and so on.

Walking two miles a day and eating a lot of small meals would account for weight loss, particularly once your metabolism starts to adjust for the regular food intake and the exercise.

By all means, go see a doctor if your mom is concerned, but if you wonder if you have an eating disorder, you probably don't.

AoD, you need to see your physician for evaluation. None of us here can tell you that you do or do not have a serious eating disorder, and it would be both ethical and irresponsible to do so.

You need (and deserve) to be seen by a professional. I'm afraid that continuing this discussion here will only put focus on symptoms that all too often become fixations -- regardless of whether one has a diagnosable eating disorder -- and I'm afraid that would not be healthy for a young woman with your concerns.

Please see your physician. If your mother doesn't agree, then you still have the right and ability to call your physician's office and speak to his or her nurse on your own while you are at school or at a friend's house. If you don't have a regular physician, then I can find something for you in your area if you email me the name of your town.

Again, talk to your physician. I'll leave it at that, and I hope everyone else does, too.

(I really do think any further remote analysis, web references, or detailed discussion of symptoms would be very unhelpful, guys, but do wat you will. [Smile] )

Sara's point is, as always, well made.

While we are objective third-parties, we are also well-removed from the problem and can't give you an honest evaluation based on our perceptions, only what you tell us.

[Trevor, I wouldn't call eating disorders either self-evident or even remotely ruled in or out. That's just one opinion, though, and I'm not going to discuss it here. [Smile] (I've been burned both ways before.)

Edit: Yeah, we are probably on the same page. I was writing my post before yours came up; otherwise, I would've put it differently! [Wave] ]

And your opinion has sound, professional backing and reasoning while mine does not so I think I'll defer to yours. [Big Grin]

Edit: Bah, don't ever worry about hurting my feelings - my personal pride should never get in the way of an honest and considered medical opinion.

Hurt feelings mend; the reverse isn't always true.

If you're in college, most campuses have health clinics with free or reduced prices for doctor's visits. If you're not in school, or your school requires health insurance, every city has a free-health clinic. A quick look online will locate the one closest you.

Since you walk one-two miles a day, your metabolism is fast. That's what exercise does--it resets your metabolism to burn more fat. You don't have an eating disorder, and you're 17, so your body's probably still going though some final growth spurts and hormone swings.

From what you say, it really doesn't sound like an eating disorder. Have you been weighing yourself, or just going by how your clothes and stuff fit? I guess what worries me is what you said about your fingers getting thinner, that doesn't sound like something that would happen so fast just due to exercise, but really, what do I know. I'll chime in with everyone else and say definitely talk to a doctor.

Just my two cents, but... "Although I do not eat my five a day and stuff, I do eat lots of meat, a fair amout of vegetables and at least four glasses of water per day"

..none of those things have carbohydrates.

You are under 18, you should qualify for some state aid. SEE A DOCTOR!

See a doc. Better safe than dead. Or paralyzed. Or in great pain. Or with an unhealthy heart-beat.

Most vegetables by themselves don't have carbs, actually.
