I had my first US Fencing Association sanctioned tournament today. A mixed foil (meaning men and women) E and under (meaning those with an E rating or below can participate). We had a field of 25 folks, 23 men and 2 women.

The foil is a sissy weapon. Real fencers use the epee.

How'd you do?

Yea Jamie, I agree with hobbes. You can't throw out that you had a tourney and then not tell us how you did. I Hope you did well.

Oh, yea. Pick up the xbox controller and get online for some halo2. I've got a friend request waiting for you. [Smile]

Congratz!

I do believe she took 8th place, which is outstanding for one's first tournament.

Keep kicking some fencing butt.

Oh, and as to the epee comment: [Razz] [Razz] [Razz]

Oh yeah? Well, I fence the epee, and I can whip any two foil sissies with my left hand behind my back. [Mad] [Wink]

Bella--AWESOME sport. It's psychotriad's fault that I got into it in the first place. How'd you get into it?

King of Men: [Razz] ...and I'm almost afraid to ask you. [Wink] I actually had the opportunity to take an epee class a couple weeks ago but passed it up because I already had a hard enough time de-training my "I'll hit you first screw right of way" instinct" for foil and didn't want to...anyway. I have epee instincts but like foil and will eventually learn saber.

Others: thanks.

Real fencers use a saber, with epee targets (i.e. everything).

My fencing instructor was more interested in teaching us what to do with a pointy piece of metal than he was in how to compete.

Common lessons would start off with "OK, don't ever do this in a tournament, but if you twist this way..." and "When you parry quinte your fist will be on line with his face. Hit him!"

Made for some interesting class sessions, especially when he'd send all of us out in the parking lot to go melee. Regular fencing classes rarely teach you how to handle multipla opponents [Smile]

Unfortunately it left me utterly useless in a tournament. Nice moves, and congrats!

Woohoo! I fenced for about a year, never serious and at most once every two weeks. I wish I'd stuck with it.

Very cool that you are competing!
