I think I'm becoming a hippy. [Eek!] Here's the evidence I've compiled thus far:

1. I ordered my daughter play silks for Christmas
2. I'm a vegetarian
3. Our next baby will wear cloth diapers because disposables are Bad For The Earth
4. I think it's nice to crochet your own dishclothes
5. Not only am I a vegetarian, but I only purchase eggs that come from free-range chickens 'cause even chickens should be free

It's gettin' freaky, folks.

*sings*

Jesus was a Capricorn, he ate organic foods.
He believed in love and peace and never wore no shoes.
Long hair, beard and sandals and a funky bunch of friends.
Reckon they'd just nail him up if He come down again.

Space Opera, are you SURE you don't live in Vermont?

[Laugh] at plaid's song

Mack, here's the biggest problem...I'm a hippy who lives in Kentucky! Of all the bad places for a hippy to be - I live in a virtual hotbed of meat eatin', deer huntin', ain't no way *I'm* ever gonna drive something that gets more than 15 miles to the gallon society! I gotta keep this transformation on the downlow or else I'll be lynched by nightfall.

How many bumper stickers do you have on your car? (Score 1 point for each one over three.)

Do you not own a car? (Score ten points.)

How many bumper stickers do you have on your bike or cargo carrier(s)? (Score one point for each.)

Do you make your own bread?

Without a breadmaker?

Is it whole grain?

Burping, farting, nose-picking and scratching yourself are also natural.

Posted by Space Opera (Member # 6504) on :

Ok, I'm safe on the washing thing! No bumper stickers either, but that's only 'cause I haven't found the right ones yet.

But *sob* I do make my own bread. Without a breadmaker. I actually had a breadmaker but sent it to Goodwill because I preferred to make the bread with my own two hands.

Have you ever eaten Tempeh? Quinoa?

Bonus Point: Do you feed your dog Quinoa-enriched vegetarian dog treats?

Space Opera,
Join me at a few music festivals and you're there, baby! I will send you appropriate hippie music if you need it. Make sure with all the au natural stuff you have that you have state-of-the-art stereos and music downloading capabilities. Also, i have found that many of my true hippie friends have some serious trust funds. Do you have one of those? Living off the land is expensive, after all.

I have some quinoa at home I haven't tried yet. I'm going to make the seafood pasta from the recipe on the back of the box. And I got organic sustainable shrimp and scallops from the health food store.

Hippie power!

Ummm...let's see

1. Make my own whole grain bread (lose 1 point for useing bread machine)

2. Make my own granola

3. Buy organic food

4. Birth at home

5. Nurse children old enough to sing "The White Album" by heart

6. Have cloth diapered all my children

7. Wear cloth myself

8. Make my own soap and lotion

9. Eat lots of brown rice

10. wear Birks all year round (with Acorn soxs in winter)

11 Total liberal peacenik

Edit to add:

12 I compost

13 Not just my own stuff, I save stuff at work and when guest at non-composters houses.

dpr, can I come live at your house?

Space Opera, you should get certified in Rolfing. Then you'd have all the hippie 'Rackers beating a path through your heirloom tomato patch. [Smile]

Posted by dread pirate romany (Member # 6869) on :

Sure, Sara!!

Do you perchance knit?

(btw, I plan to experiment with food grade chocolate massage lotion in time for Valentine's- what do you think?)

Posted by Sara Sasse (Member # 6804) on :

I knit very slowly, but I can do it. I also used to compose tiny little squares of hand-woven thread tapestries. Thanks to Christy, I can crochet a little bit, too.

Yes! Food grade chocolate massage lotion.

Well, if the lotion is a success, I'll post a recipe. Y'know, um, for people whose kids or cats always try to eat the lotion. That's right.

Er, I think I lose points right now, b/c the younger two are glued not just to TV, but Disney, while I use the 'puter. Bad hippie, no granola.

Yay hippies!

Hippies drove vans long before it became fashionable for anyone other than commercial businesses.

And Stewart Brand -- who was the organizer&producer of the Tripps Festival and organizer&editor of the the hippie bibles, TheWholeEarthCatalogs -- also created the first large public Internet gathering/forum, TheWell.

Jobs and the Woz who created Apple (forcing IBM to go into the personal computer business) are hippies still.

And ya oughtta hear the office/commune tales from before Microsoft went public.

A large percentage of physicists and hackers (hackers are to programmers as artists are to draftsmen) are also Deadheads and Rainbows; probably a majority if ya include their student days.

As for Disney: 1940's box office flop Fantasia finally made money, became a hit after finding an audience in the 60s' hippies.

So granola away in good conscience.

Hey romany, would you mind sending me your recipe for granola? E-mail addy is in my profile. Once we move we'll be a good 40 minutes from any kind of store that sells it, so I'd love to just be able to make my own. Thanks!

Posted by dread pirate romany (Member # 6869) on :

DONE, Space Opera! Here's my recipe for all....

2 cups rolled oats
2 cups rolled mixed grains (I use Bob's)
I cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup flax seed (whole or ground, doesn't matter)

Stir together in large glass baking dish

Warm 3/4 to one cup honey and 1/4 cup vegetable oil (I would not use olive, it tastes too strong) Stir in to dry ingredients. Bake in 250 oven until it's the desired crunchiness-usually takes about an hour for me.

An alternative is to replace oil with applesauce, if you like it chewy.

I feel like I'm at home.

1)Knit my own socks

2)Make my own dishcloths with recycled towels

3)Crochet more dishcloths

4)Spin my own yarn (in the most literal sense) using either my spindle or my spinning wheel

5)Even though I live in an apartment, I insist on having an annual herb garden that we harvest from

6)Make my own soap

7)Make my own candles

8)Know how to play a Doumbek

...And last but not least

9)I'm Wiccan-it's in one way or another my religion to worship the God and Goddess in nature.

Also, Space Opera, the play silk that you got your daughter, was is Eri or Bombyx silk?

Because everyone knows that it is less cruel to buy Eri silk, right?

Someone asked for appropriate hippie music. Go to www.etree.org. there is lots of it there.

Also, if you can find the game Cosmic Wimpout, you are near hippies. You must learn to play this game.

When this question was asked, I had to add another choice:

Quick hippie pop quiz:

Complete the following phrase with one of the choices listed to come up with the name of something that's really groovy: ______________ ___
Buffalo
A) Wings
B) , New York
C) Hunter
D) Springfield
E) Donna the

You know, since I actually *do* live on a hippie commune, I am SO much hippier-than-thou.

(But, since that would be an arrogant, un-hippie attitude to take, I won't take it. [Smile] )

Posted by dread pirate romany (Member # 6869) on :

[ROFL] rivka, it's cheaper to steal Bob's that buy my own.

I have several hand crocheted hacky sacks, my grandma made them for me one year, I love them, so much prettier than the bought ones.

Yes, Plaid, we are aware of that, and bow to your superior hippiness.

You know I saw a book in the craft section of B&N about hippy crafts? I believe this was the book...
