I'm editing this essay for Spanish on "Los derechos reproductos in los E.E. U.U.". I just got it back from my teacher -- he handed them out after our final -- and we have to have them back to him to the end of the day (don't even get me started on this). Anyway, the word "reproductos" is marked "HABLA CONMIGO". I can't, however, talk to him before the end of the day. Are there any Spanish speakers here who can translate the phrase "Reproductive Rights"?

EEUU is an abbreviation of Estados Unidos, right? Why does it have two Es and two Us instead of just one of each?

Well, my Spanish teachers always told me that since Los Estados Unidos is plural, the abbreviation is los EE.UU. so you can't miss the fact that it's plural.
I've never quite believed that explanation.

the double e's and U's are because you're abreviating a capitalized word. BTW, what do you mean with derechos reproductos? what ae you trying to say? I'm the fuent spanish speaker in hatrack. I'm one that I know of, at least. Its my native lang.

I've always heard the same reason Risuena gave for EEUU.
OPEP, which is the Spanish equivalent of OPEC, is plural and capitalized, and yet it is not duplicated, so
EDIT, thinking more about this, while "Países" is plural, the congregate is not: "Organización." EEUU, on the other hand, is entirely plural. So I'm more inclined to continue believing that this is why.
In any case, miswriting one word on a title seems like something that could be more easily corrected without having to meet with the teacher, so I wonder if it might not have been something else.

By the way, that's often with the t pronounced.

A mí tambien me faltan oportunidades para mantener la práctica. (Casi) Todos mis amigos hablan inglés, y hasta con los amigos bilingües me encuentro hablando en inglés porque nos sentimos raros hablando en español cuando sabemos inglés. Varias veces he pensado que sería bueno tener un hilo para conversación en español, para nosotros que queremos mantener la práctica, pero cada vez que uno empieza, una persona o otra que no habla español se enoja, quizás imaginándose que estamos hablando sobre otros jatraqueros, o simplemente indigno sobre no poder entendernos. Annie empezó un hilo en español en galacticcactus.com, pero murió cuando el sitio se murió por un ratico hace uno o dos meses. Si hay varios de nosotros que queremos practicar, debe de ser posible hacerlo aquí.

Aquí en Texas, la mayoria de mis amigos hablan español pero como tus amigos biligues, casi siempre hablamos en inglés. Pero ahora creo que el portugués es un problema mas grande para mí. Cada vez que trato de hablar en español tengo que pensar demasiado para no usar portugués y es más fácil usar inglés.

Recuerdo los hilos con David Bowles y jacare sorridente discutando sobre (y en) español y portugués - siempre son muy divertidos. Pues, podemos usar este hilo para practicar y si alguien se enoja podemos mudar a otra lugar.

Más bien sería "¿Qué onda, güey?" Pero, en fin. No todos dominamos la otorgrafía del español, mucho menos el deletreo de tales vocablos del caló. Pero, hay que acordarse de que la letra "w" rara vez se utiliza en el dulce castellano.

Siempre es difícil interpretar el tono correctamente sobre el internet, ya que ni me puedes oír la voz ni ver la cara--y probablemente es mas difícil todavía cuando estamos hablando en español. Por mi parte, yo me encuentro adoptando un tono mas formal para evitar disparar con un "cubanismo" que nadie entendería. El tono que yo intentaba era mas como un *thwap*, pero no enojado en serio, sino bromeando.
Yo nací aquí en los EEUU, pero mi familia es cubana, y me crié en Miami, donde (como en California) la cultura latina todavía esta viva y fuerte. Mis padres no me enseñaron inglés: en lugar, me ensañaron hablar en español, y yo aprendí inglés cuando llegué a la escuela americana. Creo que es una de las dos cosas mas inteligentes que hicieron mis padres. (La otra fue siempre comprarme libros, sin fijarse en el precio, aunque estábamos bastante pobres a veces.)
