There are four CDs on iTunes that I'm planning to buy this Friday. Those CDs bring the subtotal to "$39.96 + applicable sales tax". They conveniently don't tell you what the applicable sales tax is until you buy it.
The problem is I don't own a credit or debit card. All of my purchases on iTunes are made with the prepaid cards. I plan on buying a $30 and $15 card, but I'd be really pissed if I bought those and the total of the CDs came to be over $45.
So, does anybody know how much tax they'd add on to a $39.96 order on iTunes?

They do it from your zip code (I think). What is your local sales tax rate?

Unless your sales tax rate is obscenely high (more than 10%), you're fine with $45. And yeah, I'm pretty sure it's done using your local tax rate.

Oh, I didn't know that.
Well, I believe 8.65 is the rate right now. So that means I should get by with $45, but just barely.
Thanks, both of you.

I'm not a fan either - we're looking at a 9.25% sales tax soon.

I love you too, Goat.

I think we're 6.75 or something to that effect, but that doesn't make me hate NH any less. (shakes fist at Mack)

Oregon has no sales tax.

So does it go by the zip code on my IP or on the credit card I use? Because if it's the former, I'm only gonna order music when I'm home. Silly sales tax here. I had to get used to it when I started going to ASU--I thought everyone was overcharging me!

I'm pretty sure it goes by billing address. That's how it determines which country's store you can use, and I would think tax would be determined the same way.
