Ya know, I just realized something, there are more occurances of people getting into a twist about Christmas and whether or not it should be public this year than in any other year. Has anyone else noticed this, or am I just crazy (Don't answer that second part, please [Smile] )?

There was a similar surge about three years ago... Slate has an interesting article on the state of the debate and the S.C.'s rulings so far.

Oh right. Three years...I was still inside the Mormon Mission bubble back then. Wouldn't have known a thing about it [Smile]

One weird thing I noticed about Christmas this year was that all the stores seemed to be advertising home-gambling-style games in the spotlight.

I have never seen this be "trendy" before. Did something happen that I totally missed? (I certainly wouldn't be surprised.) Or was this something that was trendy decades ago and is now being rehashed like everything else?

beverly,
Poker is the "in" thing right now. Huh?? There are all poker stations, etc, and people have poker parties. i thinkit is freakishly weird, myself. But then I was thinking, hmm, is this another retro 70's thing? Because i remember when I was a kid, my parents always seemed to play pokr at parties.

Celebrity Poker Showdown on Bravo network has become a Hot Thing. I don't know if it triggered or was in response to the wave. There are poker shows everywhere, now.

Recently, the trend was cigars. Connection? [Dont Know]

Connection? I think so. Next year it'll be those green visors.

From my perspective (the toy-store employee perspective), the big thing this year is visual/strategy games like Blokus.

Also, the movie Rounders made poker popular again. Many of my friends and acquaintences play Texas hold 'em.

Yes, Texas hold 'em. I have heard that, too.

Hmmm, I figured something triggered this new trend. And I knew I didn't know what it was. [Wink]

Back in the 70s, when I was but a wee girl, my da tried teaching all us kids how to play poker. It was too complicated for my 5 year old brain. But I managed to pick up Blackjack no problem. And Canasta. But he hated it, cuz my sister and I used to whoop him and our older brothers when we partnered up.

Actually, I believe the televising of the World Poker Tournament has a lot to do with the current poker craze.

Why would anyone want tow atch people play poker?
I got a survey about that and was like, nope, boring.
Now, playing poker and winning a lot of money and then leaving early... Now that sounds appealing.

The World Poker Championship is why it is so popular.

I work in retail, and the three hottest gifts anywhere right now are Poker, Slot Machines, and bar materials like shot despensers and bar sets.

So for Christmas we will all be broke and drunk....

Sounds like the 90's to me.... [Big Grin]
