I graduated from a Benedictine college and have many monk friends in the monastery there. Recently, one of the monks died. The Abbot of the monastery is a damn good homilist. He managed to capture the essence of the person as he truly was, giving the truth of the person who passed, showing their humanity. He does this with grace and humor, with love and spirituality.

Every time I hear Abbot Matthew speak like this, I am reminded of why I admire these men, why I admire these friends of mine, in their humanity and their life's work.

I also admire all the Benedictines I’ve known. And I agree – that's a darn good funeral homily.

Tom,

Just write your own eulogy and tuck it in with your will. Why don't more people think of that?

Mack, my Latin teacher was a former Jesuit priest and the funniest man I have ever known. My dad gave the eulogy(which is hard to be allowed to do if you are not a priest in a Catholic funeral mass),and it was also very funny and sweet.
