Tolerance
Compassion

I'm trying to figure out if they really occupy different slots.

To me at least, compassion involves empathy while tolerance does not. If I am moved to help by what I've seen, I have compassion. If I put up with something becuase it's not worth fighting about, I'm tolerating it.

*Waits for a Grammer Commie to wander by so I can see how I did.*

I'd have to agree with AR, compassion denotes a connectedness and a sense of empathy whereas tolerance implies simply putting up with.
