Doing genealogy doesn't have to be expensive. There are many free sites on the internet that have a load of informtion on US genealogy. For example, check out
US GenWeb Project.
Or this one.
Or this one.
And let's not forget this one, either.

There are tonnes of resources on the internet that can help you search for your ancestors at no cost.

I have an annoying ancestor who evades detection, and he's not even that distant, he's my grandmother on my father's side's father (my great-grandfather) and when he married my grandmother's mother, he was listed as having been married once before.

The questions are: Who are his parents and who was this first marriage to?
