I've talked about doing this for the past three years, I want to stop talking and start doing. So, on the day after Christmas I registered for the certification exam to teach French. I minored in French in college, but my last class was three years ago and I'm pretty rusty.

48 days from now I'm taking the test. The only way I'll pass is if I study every day. That hasn't happened yet, so I want to make this my accountability & study log.

If I post something incorrect please feel free to correct me. I'd appreciate it [Smile]

Also- can anyone recommend books/websites/ journal articles on foreign language teaching theory? I want to make sure I'm getting the terminology correct. [Smile]

I just started taking a french class tonight at my college. I took some in high school but have to retake it because I forgot a lot, and it's needed for a foreign language requirement.

We are sending our 4 year old to a Montessori school. Among thier curriculm is the desire to teach young kids French.

The problem, every year the French teacher leaves for greener pastures before the year is out.

This year they gave up and brought in a Spanish teacher.

(It turned out that the Spanish teacher is an old friend of my wifes from a previous job.)

So YEA!!!. We need more French skills.

Bonjour missiour, j'aim parler au francias(im learning the language as we speak, my class starts at 8 o clock, kind of sucks, but its good to have a foreign language experience to get into a good college). If your looking for a book, i recomend HOLT French, im using it right now and it seems to be effective.

DP, does it have practice exercises? How is it laid out? I'm trying to pick up French. Maybe we can lure Coccinelle, Anna, and Choobak into some gentle oversight of a Practice Your French thread. [Big Grin]

48 jours avant l'examen:

Les Articles

L'article defini- le/la/les

On emploie l'article defini devant:
L'article indefini un/une/des
On emploie l'article indefini:
L'article partitif du/de la
[Sorry, no accents. They showed up as chinese characters. [Confused] ]

DP- Thanks for the suggestion- that's the text that is used in my school district right now. I've got it, but unfortunately it doesn't address the areas that are of concern for me right now. For grammar, I love my Hachette grammar book (and practice exercise books) that I bought in Geneve.

I'm generally fluent in conversation, rusty with grammar, and I need desperate help with the French culture section. My experiences have been with Swiss French, which I learned this summer isn't the same as France French.

Sara, I think a "practice your French thread" is a great idea! Let's do it!- We can make this thread that too... as long as you don't mind my daily review postings.

The good news about remembering the genders of the countries is that one of the exceptions - Le Zaire - n'existe plus! Maintenant, il faut seulement memoriser au Mexique et au Mozambique. [Smile]

Oh, yeah. That would be so great.

I have work stuff to do first thing tomorrow, but when I have a break, I'll try to translate your post above.

Cool.

Thanks Annie! I forgot that those two are masculine. Aren't there a few that don't have an article in front of them? Let me look...yep... Cuba, Israel, Madagascar, and Chypre. I wonder why they are an exception.

Also, I like to watch news programs in French online to keep up now that I'm done with school and terrified of losing everything.

They have some good journaux télévisés ici.

Also, Texas gets country status. It's à Nouveau Mexique and au Texas.

Bonne idee! Je regardait France 2 quand j'etais a l'universite souvent. Maintainant, je regards toutes les DVDs en francais. Gilmore Girls... elles parlent vite!!!

Well, many Texans do believe that Texas is it's own country [Big Grin]

Sorry but That's a little wrong. Currently we continue to say : L'Angleterre, les Pays-Bas, la France, Les Etats-Unis d'Amérique...

And

quote:
Also, Texas gets country status. It's à Nouveau Mexique and au Texas
we say Au Nouveau Mexique.

Et le français redevient compliqué...

About a french thread, I'm with you when you want. [Wink]

Au fait, merci pour ce cours sur les articles : il est très bien et m'a remis les idées en place sur le sujet.

Hmmm, isn't Canada masculine too? Like: "le Canada"? [Confused]
