Does anyone know how I can get Word to recognise cantillation accents, and how to insert them?

I have been trying to look this up for you Jonathan (I love a good Word challenge) but don't come up with much.

Looks like you might have to go with some sort of Add-On

Thanks, FG; do you know of any free stuff?

What is cantillation?

I think you want one of their Hebrew/Aramaic fonts, like this one.

I like the fact that they have free downloadable Hebrew keyboard maps -- I was able to add Hebrew to several computers at work, as well as the one I use at home. [Smile]

Cantillation marks are the ones in the Jewish Bible (Hebrew only), that show you how to read. They act both as punctuation, and as musical instructions on how to read. The Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deutonomy), the Haftara (Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Josiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and the 12), and the "Megillot" all have different ways of reading. On special occasions and days, other musical tunes are read.

Askenazi, Sephardi, Moroccan and Yemenite Jews all sinh differently. In Ashkenazi Judaism, Germans, Poles, Italians and Hungarians have different ways of singing. Every person has 'his' slight variation on his teacher's method of singing.

Thank you, rivka!

You're quite welcome. [Smile] You'll have to let me know how they work -- I've only ever used their basic Hebrew letters.

Hmm, doesn't seem to work with the basic Hebrew font that came with their basic download. I'll have to download one of these additional fonts later. I haven't played around with any of them yet.

Hey Jonathan, I don't know about special Bible cantillation marks.

However, if you have a hebrew keyboard / language option on your computer, you can do nikkud by simply pressing CAPSLOCK and then Shift+?, ? representing a key alongside the number row: `1234567890-=\
