OK, so I just turned 21. I am not really an alcohol drinker by any stretch of the imagination, but I'm also not adverse to it. What I really want to do, instead of going out and getting drunk every night, really try some different kinds of drinks to see what I like.

So, what's your favorite alcoholic drink?

Posted by Insanity Plea (Member # 2053) on :

Something NOT rubbing alcohol, that's all I have to say.
Satyagraha

hmmm I like screwdrivers with bit of peach schnapps tossed in. I'd reccommend a bartenders bible, those are fun to look through.

AJ

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I'm partial to peach schnapps, myself, I'll admit, and most kinds of brandy. But if I'm actually out drinking, I usually go with rum and coke or a Manhattan. These are two classic and very popular drinks -- with numerous versions -- that drinkers will expect you to know. [Smile]

You should also become familiar with screwdrivers, fuzzy navels, margaritas, Cosmopolitans, mint juleps, Tom Collinses, vodka "martinis," real martinis, and the venerable gin and tonic. My wife likes Shirley Temples, but also tequila neat. Go figure. [Smile]

Singapore slide, for me. I enjoy the citrus-y-ness of it.

EDIT: I have no idea how to make it, sorry.

If you like citrus, sangria's also nice.

Vodka tonic with grey goose - My favorite drink. Great for any occassion.

Apple Martini - A good after dinner drink. Also a good ice breaker on dates. I usually order this for a girl if she wants me to recommend something.

Glenlivet Scotch - I like to bring a bottle to the Hollywood Bowl and follow it with some green tea ice cream. [Smile]

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Glenlivet is the best single malt, IMNSHO.

Posted by Eaquae Legit (Member # 3063) on :

vwiggin, who makes green tea ice cream? I've never seen it anywhere but in japanese-style cafes and such...

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Bloody Mary

Margarita

Tequila shots with lime and salt

Lemon drop: Shot of Absolut Citron vodka taken like a shot of tequila, but with sugar instead f salt

Newman's own Limeade and vodka

When sick: blackberry brandy

Posted by vwiggin (Member # 926) on :

Eaquae Legit - I get my ice cream at a magical place I call "parent's fridge". [Smile]

I think my parents get them at a local Japanese supermarket called Marukai (I live in SoCal). Do you have any Japanese supermarkets in your area? Here's a recipe from about.com.

My absolute favorite drink is a caipirinha. However, I don't order it unless I am certain that it will be made correctly. So I normally go with a rum and coke/cuba libre (with bacardi or better as the rum - I cannot stand any form of Captain Morgan's).

I haven't quite mastered the proportions of a caipirinha myself, but if you ever go to a Brazilian restaurant or club, order one. It's cachaça (a Brazilian liquor distilled from sugar cane - it's not a rum, but it's not disimilar), sugar, lime juice and ice.

Another classic that's good to have in your repertoire is gin and tonic - besides it looks cool under blacklights.

Posted by dread pirate romany (Member # 6869) on :

I am quite partial to strawberry margaritas.

A cheap, very tasty drink to make at home is bellini (sp?), which is champagne and peach nectar. I am trying to remember the proportions- I think 50%-50%?

That's crazy.

I like really good (too expensive for me to ever buy) tequila neat. They have tastings at the Mexican embassy in D.C. I also like decent tequila with a sangrita (not sangria) chaser. There's a bar a couple blocks from the pier in Pacific Beach I get it at when I'm in San Diego.

Generally, though, a good pale beer (Corona, Rolling Rock, Heineken) or a Cuba Libre (because it sounds cooler than rum and coke) will do quite nicely for me.

That and Yellowtail Shiraz are pretty much it for me and alcohol.

Most things with rum and tequila, for me. A well-made Long Island Ice Tea goes down reeeeeeal smooth.

But be careful. They are po-tant.

Sara, you might like Glenlivet as a single malt (which we have, and Glenfidditch too). But could I bribe you with a taste of Johnie Walker Blue Label to come visit once the puppies arrive*?

Whiskey Old Fashioned Sour please.

The venerable rum and coke is a good one. Recently I found a brand of rum that is mixed with tequila in the bottle -- the rum and coke I made with that stuff is my favourite of all the rum and cokes I've ever had. Tasty! [Smile]

I also like polar bears, but that's actually a shot. I just drink it out of a glass because it's so very tasty (it tastes exactly like an After Eight chocolate). Also, speaking of shots that are pleasurable to drink from a glass, Bailey's is wonderful stuff.

Screwdrivers, as has been mentioned already. Some martinis can be quite tasty.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Also, I love Mojitos. When lazy, I just smush up some mint from the garden and put it in my Paul Newman's limeade and vodka.

This thread is making me... thirsty.

Well, the standard rum and Coke is rather nice. When I'm drinking at home (which I hardly ever do), I usually just have port or cognac. When I'm out at a bar, I get Amaretto sour. Not really sure what's in it, but it tastes great.

But I'm pretty much a non-drinker, basically. I hardly ever drink alcohol. Most kinds of alcohol I've never even tried. I've never had gin, but I've had tonic water, and it is nasty.

There's a drink called a baby Guinness. Put kaluah in a tall shot glass about 2/3 up, add Bailley's the rest of the way. The kaluah is the beer, the Bailley's the head. Very fun in a cheesy sort of way.

Oh, Ralphie, I've had Del Dueno, I think. Blue roundish, flat bottle, very heavy glass?

Posted by Javert (Member # 3076) on :

I like the idea of rum and coke...but the question is, what kind of rum? I've heard good things about Malibu...and not just because I love the commercials.

On a related note, I will share with you all my VERY limited drinking experience:

Two Beers: Yuengling Lager and a Miller Light
Three Glasses of Wine: One Red, Two White
One Mike's Hard Cranberry Lemonade (Yum)
One Shot of Southern Comfort

Just wanted to state that so you understand why I'm asking for help, hehe.

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Dag - That's the shape of the bottle, but it innit blue. Here, this is what Del Dueno looks like.

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Javert - I love Captain Morgans Spiced. Reasonable price, and very smooth.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

I love the Captain, but sometimes, the Coke just begs for Myers.

The difference between good tequila and bad tequila is like the difference between powdered milk and milk. Or something.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Nope, the bottle I was thinking of was like a circle with a neck at one end and a flat bottom.

And Captain Morgan's is great on the rocks or in ginger ale.

Dr. Zhivago's are good - Dr. Pepper and Vodka. But this was all back in my college days.

Posted by Risuena (Member # 2924) on :

Malibu is coconut flavored rum. I'm not a big fan of it in coke, but I do like it in orange juice and other fruity drinks.

And I would just like to point out that I am a good sister. Every year for Christmas and my brother's birthday, I get him beers he's never tried (thanks to me, he has several favorite beers). This year, I discovered he liked tequila, so I got him some añejo Patron. Too bad he didn't let me try any of it... stupid brother.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Dag, a beautiful bottle of Spanish glass? Patron?

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Nope, it wasn't the Patron bottle.

I've been looking, but no luck. The Corazon bottles are the closest in shape, but the neck was much shorter and the front looked flatter. Plus it was light blue.

Huh. Now this is going to drive me crazy. Of course, I might have been a little tipsy at the time.

Posted by Ralphie (Member # 1565) on :

Lapiz Añejo?

edit: I believe a variation comes in a lighter bottle, also.

For silliness sake, I'll just say Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster. Nothing like "having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon wrapped around a large gold brick".

For seriousness sake, my favorite to make and drink would have to be Midori Sours. Very simple, and oh so tasty.

I'm also fond of Black Velvets and Snakebites.

Captain Morgan's is good, Captain Morgan's Private Stock is better. Good straight or mixed with Coke.

Irish Car Bomb - You need a glass cup and a shot glass (or double shot glass), as well as a Guiness, Bailey's, and Jameson's (or another whiskey). Pour the Guiness into the cup. Fill the shot glass most of the way with Bailey's, and top off with Jameson's. Drop the shot glass into the cup; it should float. Chug as fast as possible.

My friends had some rum they brought back from Jamaica. It was heavenly.

The one thing I cannot stand is gin. Not too many gin lovers in this thread, it seems.

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

Oh no, Liz. I *loooove* gin (Bombay Sapphire) and tonics.

Last time we flew internationally, Tony and I brought back 4.5 litres of Bombay Sapphire between us. [Smile]

(So cheap duty free).

I haven't really tried many other gin based cocktails though - apart from the classic martini which is way too strong for me. I'm not a big fan of neat liquor.

I'm rather unadventurous when it comes to alcohol... Captain and Coke, vodka and cranberry juice, Chardonnay, sometimes Cabernet Sauvignon. Ive got a couple other bottles in my cabinet purchased for company that either weren't finished off or in a couple instances never opened. Maybe tonight I should crack open the Dreamsicle mix.

Me, I'm rather partial to the Sliding Glass Door, the Plastic Rivet, the Cute Girl Who Farts, the One-Stop-Shopper, the Disembowled Canine, the Elvis Impersonator, the Magellan's Expedition, and the Dangling Participle.

Okay, I made all of those up. As far as I know. But considering some of the real names of mixed drinks, I wouldn't be surprised to find any of those in a bar. (I mean, really. Who the hell names a drink "Slow Comfortable Screw Against the Wall"?)

Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :

Because it probably has orange juice and Southern Comfort in it. I'd imagine.

Did I mention I started tending bar a month ago?

Does anyone know how to make a Romulan Ale? I had them at a con...oh, pre-kids, and all I remember is vodka and Blue Caraco.

Posted by Danzig avoiding landmarks (Member # 6792) on :

I have seen a few different recipes floating around on the Web for an earth-bound version of a Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster.

The only use I have for vodka is running covert ops, or as a solvent. And I have only run covert ops a few times. I have never had a martini, but I would refuse to drink such an abomination as a "vodka martini".

Mint julep - Make a syrup by boiling sugar and water together for about five minutes. Add several sprigs of bruised mint and place in a covered container. Refrigerate overnight. Pack crushed ice into a cup. Add 1 tablespoon syrup and two ounces of Kentucky bourbon, and garnish with a fresh mint sprig.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

"(I mean, really. Who the hell names a drink "Slow Comfortable Screw Against the Wall"?)"

There is a logic to drink names. A "Slow Comfortable Screw Against the Wall" is a screwdriver with Southern Comfort, sloe gin, and galliano (from a Wallbanger.)

If you needed a drink called "Disembowled Canine," you should first come up with a complicated drink named, say, "Hair of the Dog." Then you could invent a drink called a Bowler Hat, which contained several of the ingredients in the Hair of the Dog. A Disembowled Dog, then, would be a Hair of the Dog minus the ingredients shared by the Bowler Hat recipe.

You know, I was introduced to Romulian Ale while singing karioki with Klingons. Strange. But one of the guys was very proud of his home brewed Romulian ale. And, I must say, it was quite a kick in the head. But I dont remember how he made it. Nothing like hanging with a group of drunk bikers dressed up like Klingons, drinking Romulian ale, to let you know your a nerd.

I like making my own rasberry lemonade, with rasberry vodka....or you can use regular vodka and rasberry lemonade mix, I guess.

I also really like Cabo Wabo tequila, and the Sauza stuff isn't bad either. Stay away form anything by Jose Quervo, as it all sucks compared to real aguave tequila.Linky to CaboWabo.

I'm going to throw in my two cents here.

The Manhattan is the best mixed drink ever devised, hands down. Coming in a distant second is a dry Bombay martini with a twist. For a pick me up, a prarie fire is perfect, that's tequila and Tabasco to the uninformed.

Posted by Carrie (Member # 394) on :

As far as drinks go, I'll drink anything. It's actually a pretty bad habit of mine, but I rarely get horribly sick-drunk. I will at least try anything, though.

As for favourites... wow. Like I said, I'll drink anything, but I do prefer tequila, much to the chagrin of pretty much everyone I know. Apparently a lot of people have had bad experiences with it... [Wink] If you like margaritas but don't have mix or anything but tequila and ice, use Sprite (or a similarly flavoured soda). It's quite good, really.

And can anyone explain the origins of the Monkey Humper? I think (this was a couple years ago that I had it) it had pineapple juice, orange juice, peach schnapps, and rum, but I'm not entirely sure. It's also rather detrimental that I didn't actually see the drink being prepared.

Posted by Danzig avoiding landmarks (Member # 6792) on :

I can count the number of times I have been sick from alcohol on one hand. Tequila was the only time I got sick from the taste alone. I have been scared ever since.

Posted by Troubadour (Member # 83) on :

I'm a big fan of Gin martinis. They have to be made with Bombay Blue Saphire gin, and stirred in a glass jug with glass stirrer - a metal shaker can "bruise" the gin.

Served ice-cold with an olive and it's a truly breathtaking cocktail.

The first time you try one your reaction will be "WHA-HEY-HEY-HEY!!" - after which you'll vow to never take another drink. But then it's aftertaste will beging to work on you and you'll want more.

Then you'll be hooked.

But I'd like to say something on alcohol in general;

There's no point in drinking poor-quality alcohol. You won't enjoy it, it'll give you a poor view of that particular type of alcohol (Tequila is one of the most-maligned liquors due to poor-quality brews)and your body will hate it.
