Check this out!!!!

Basically it is a book about a 15 year old guy who researches the murder of a dog, and finds out information about his mother that was hidden from him. The thing is? He is autistic. Overall it was a good book. Absolutely brilliant. Mark Haddon did a wonderful job of reinventing autism for literature. Christopher(the main character) is so much like autistic people I know in the real world it is scary. Give it a shot and if you don't like it zap me with a cattle prod. [Big Grin]

Excellent book. Helped me to deal with my son (Asperger-ish tendencies) much better. I've recommended it to various family members, it's been helpful for them too. Besides which, it's just a darn good book.

I got bought this book for my 21st birthday 2 years ago and read it straight through on the day - I love it and have recommended it to everyone and anyone. Brilliant characterisation, lovely writing, sharp and funny and moving often all at once... just a beautiful book. Have lent it to one of my students, who seems to have liked it - he finished it within a week (this is a maths/science geek with English as a second language). Well worth reading, for definite.

It's a great book. I'd recommend it along with Steve Martin's The Pleasure of My Company.

See that is what I thought. That is why I wanted to spread the word. My dad's book club did it and got tons on discussion out of it.....they even let me particapate and I contributed the most. I would definitely put this in my Top 20 books or Top 10.........I don't know

What age range is it appropriate for?

Should I add it to my collection of books I want to have available for students when I finally get a job as a librarian?

Word about this book must be spreading, I checked my public library and they have over a dozen copies but the majority are checked out. None of the libraries close to me have any available right now, and some even have multiple holds on them. Wow!

I would say that this book appears innocent in inverse proportion to the reader's intelligence and perception, Belle. It's actually quite sordid and dirty, and I wouldn't recommend it to children -- but by the same token, I'd imagine that most children would completely miss the sordid dirtiness.

I'd agree with Tom, Belle. My 12 year old niece read it, and liked it, but I wouldn't have thought of recommending it to her. I honestly never asked her much about the sordid parts-- figured if they did go over her head I didn't want to make her aware of them...
