Did anyone else get a VISIT email for a new forum started by a member who has posted I think three whole times?

This irritates me. It's spam.I don't know who you are, you don't know who I am, you pulled my email from hatrack and emailed me with crap.

[Mad]

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

I got one - I didn't know he was a member from here, as I didn't recall any of his posts.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

They were a couple threads along the same line as what the "new forum" is about.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

I received one and reported it as spam. Totally inappropriate.

Posted by Bokonon (Member # 480) on :

Man, I don't even get Hatrack spam... And no, all of you forwarding it to me doesn't count.

I got one. I think I'll also report it as spam.

edit: I don't remember emptying my trash, but it's gone. Oh well.

I got two of them, actually.

He probably just grabbed the names out of a particular thread and sent them to whoever posted there and had their email addresses visible.

Awww. But my conspiracy-theory fun!

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I wonder if he just harvested email addresses from posters that posted in certain threads. That would be an easy way to do it.

It'd be easier to just increment the profile urls over and over.

I could have gotten one, but since my inbox is set to receive mail only from those on my mailing list, it would have gone into junkmail - so I would have deleted it as junk anyway.

*narrowed eyes*

Toms River, NJ? Funny, I could swear one of our long-time regulars lives in or near there. Was this whole thing an elaborate game?

I won't name a name, because I could be misremembering . . .

Although that phone number is apparently for a 7-11. Something is very fishy here.

I got one too -- I didn't know he got it from Hatrack e-mail addresses, although this IS the only place I use my gmail address. I just figured some bot picked up the addresses off this forum. I was also surprised to see spam in my Gmail, since I rarely ever get any such thing there....

I got it twice, once last night and once this morning. Seems pretty random, I've only been posting on Hatrack for a couple weeks.

If someone wants to, report him to the abuse department at his webhost:

http://www.affinity.com/global/contact_us.htm?dept=support

You want abuse in the department pulldown.

I'd save a copy of one of his emails (I have one), and maybe send a screenshot of a post to hatrack (I also have one of these).

I won't be doing it unless he gets more annoying (my bayesian filter picked up on him once I said the first email was junk, and he's not posting all that frequently to hatrack), but if someone else wants to and would like the pieces of evidence, feel free to ask.

I don't understand the psychology behind this. It can't be that anyone would believe this approach would work, not in this day and age. Spammers are more hated than ... er, someone from a very hated profession, but we aren't going to name professions because that would be insulting some of our valued members with an inappropriate stereotype. But you can fill in the dots.

This has to be intended as harrassment, right? Right? Surely nobody is this intellectually dense. [Confused]

Well, it depends--I'm sure that traffic at his site his higher than it would be if he hadn't posted his messages here and spammed us. I visited it just to see what other Hatrackers were saying, and I definitely never would have found my way over there on my own. I'll not be going back, of course....

Oh, and he probably purchased the hosting through this identity of the host: http://www.valueweb.com/

Plus, the info on fraudulent DNS information (the wrong phone number, for instance) should be mentioned. It might go to his registrar (network solutions, likely purchased through his host) as well.

I suppose someone could always report him to AOL as well; from his email's member page (here: http://members.aol.com/ForceRVG/ ) its likely the same guy.

CT -- it likely is somebody who thinks it'll work. Similar tactics (though none this incompetent that I know of) have worked for spammers for a while, unfortunately.

Yeah. Plumbers are the Beast, eh?

*nervous giggle

So, this approach still works. Huh. That's one reason why I wouldn't be posting over at his site. I'm afraid any attention would be taken as positive reinforcement. Ewwww.

It's a shame, because if he were willing to invest of himself somewhere, I'm sure he's have a better chance of substantial returns. Ah, well, trying to get something for nothing. The modern way, and it's as old as the hills.

Technical Support would likely be a good place to start: http://vhost.verat.net/eng/vhost_kontakt/88/
